About
Built around 1480, The Thatched Tavern was originally a farmhouse with a croft (a small farm). There was also a Blacksmiths forge at the back of the building where the kitchen hatch is now, and a wood store at the end of the bar.During the reign of Queen Anne (1701) Cheapside and the surrounding area became recognised as a fashionable place to be seen. The Royal Races on Ascot Heath (as it was then known) also began, although a bit sporadicallyThe Thatched Tavern only became a pub, or tap house as it was known then, in about 1760; it was one of the three most popular drinking establishments in the hamlet of Cheapside. In the early 1900’s it became the main drinking centre in Cheapside, known as ‘The Old Thatch’ The Landlord at this time used to sell local medicine used to cure most ills, consisting of 2 penn’orth of rum and 4 penn’orth of a secret mixture known as warmit! The Tavern has been owned and is loved by many. Some of our locals have been coming here for over 50 years!

We found this pub online when searching for somewhere dog friendly and it didn’t disappoint. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, the food was great (we had the Christmas dinner and chocolate brownie) and good value for money, and to say the pub is dog friendly is an understatement (we did confirm when booking we could take the dogs with us). The bar area was cosy and very festive - we could see the outside area and it looked amazing with the chalets and heaters! We loved it and will definitely be back next time we’re in the area.

Lovely old building creates a great atmosphere, along with open fires. The staff were friendly from the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel very welcome. The menu had a great choice of dishes and the waiter also did a good job of explaining them. The Duck scotch eggs were lovely, and the shoulder of lamb was cooked really well and just fell apart.

I'm not sure if they would call themselves a 'Gastro Pub'...but the food is excellent, as is the service and the ambiance is great. I took an American business colleague and she just loved the 'Englishness' of it all. She chose the venison and was advised that it had been recently culled from HRH's Windsor Great Park herd which tasted lovely.

I chose calves liver, which what delicious. But I did ask for fries instead of potato mash, which was not a problem. I asked for Spinach instead of kale, which was not a problem. I did ask for some mayonaise which came in a little bowl which has been in use a few times. The rim of the bowl was with dried mayonaise. Not fresh!
Also I found on the bill that I had to pay for fries and Spinach, an extra £8,25 and I had to drain my own Spinach!!!
I know the VAT went down to 5% but they charged me fully

Every few years I go back to this restaurant hoping the service has improved since my last visit. After my meal last week I can say that, if anything, it is even worse than before. The waitress was surly and the service was extremely slow. The veggie burgers were mushy and not very good. I had fish and that was beautifully cooked but unseasoned and the sauce that came with it was bland. The high point of the meal was the chocolate brownies that we all enjoyed. On a safety note, the waitress was wearing a short visor and no face mask. Surely the visor must funnel any water droplets and aerosols in her breath straight down onto the food and the drink as it is being carried to the table. Even if this practice of wearing a visor without a mask is acceptable within the government guidelines, it seems like the perfect way to ensue any potential viruses carried by a server would end up in your food and/or drink.

Still being cautious about going indoors Post lockdown, and with the decent weather, we booked a table outside in the garden, which was a perfect way to spend an evening out.
No table menus, but a chalk board is brought to the table. Sadly they had ran out of a couple of items which would have been our choice (calves liver), but our 2nd (or 3rd) choices were available.
Long delays for drinks and food, think this is due to the covid precautions, staff seems to be serving lots of tables, which was a pity as we have always enjoyed dining here and chatting to the staff, but they seemed to be rushed of their feed. Trying to attract staff attention to re-order drinks wasn’t easy too.
When food did arrive, it was fresh and hot, so the wait was worth it.
Such a beautiful, old building, we have always enjoyed visiting the Thatched Tavern and food was its usual high standard.

My sister and I had the pleasure of a wonderful Sunday lunch here today with our brother who was enroute through Heathrow to far flung lands. Arriving early (11:30am), we were greeted by the charming and most entertaining gentleman - Tom who looked after us so beautifully throughout our stay. This is a delightful, atmospheric tavern with a diverse and very tasty menu of freshly cooked food. We enjoyed Duck Scotch Egg & Tiger prawns to start followed by 16 hour slowed cooked Lamb roast main. Finishing off with two brownies and a mixed ice cream, we agreed that the food was sublime. Another little bonus was making new friends (at a safe distance) with fellow diners. Thatched Tavern takes health and safety in our strange new world very seriously but does not compromise on the quality of food or service. And as for Tom (who also kindly printed off some much needed flight material), well he is the Talented Topping on this Tasty Tavern.

Even though there have been changes this year with an enlarged outdoor eating area due to Covid 19 the quality of the food here has remained excellent. Our lock downs takeaways and Sunday roasts, including canned draught ales have always been spot on. We ventured back post lockdown to eat in the garden last month and their one way system and hygiene standards are very good. Get there early if you want to order their popular homemade duck scotch egg!
They welcome dogs too!

I have never left a review before but honestly this place was so surprisingly bad that I feel compelled to make an exception. The service at this pub was just plain rude and we had a really disappointing experience. We booked dinner to celebrate a birthday with friends but the whole evening turned into a fiasco. First, the waitress made a comment about us being 5 minutes late for our booking and led us to our lonesome table next to the bathrooms. Ordering drinks turned into a trial, as we made the mistake of asking which of the draughts were lagers. The waitress flipped slowly and deliberately through the lengthy drinks menu (into the realm of whiskey and rum) and then returned to the list of draughts on page 1 and proceeded to tell us they were all lagers (even the cider and ales). This was extremely bizarre and seemingly intended to embarrass us. Anyway, we ordered drinks and the waitress returned 10 minutes later, unable to remember who had ordered what at a table of 4 people and expressed annoyance at the lack of space due to the menus we were still reading. We were rushed to order food and then. we. waited. 2 hours. Our waitress did not come anywhere near our table during this time. We eventually flagged down a different waiter to ask about our food and see if we could order more to drink. Eventually our food and drinks arrived at about 10 pm. We had to ask multiple times for sauces and the waitress again gave us attitude about having to bring these to the table. Unfortunately, the food was extremely average and did not make up for the terrible service - although to be fair to the chef, I am not sure what could have improved things at this point. We couldn't wait to pay and get out of this place. Obviously our waitress was nowhere to be found so we had to find someone else to bring our bill and take payment. When we left, we finally caught sight of her having a smoke with mates out the back. What a lousy evening.

Hi Jasminec
I am so sorry that something seems to gone so wrong with your meal at the Thatched. I have contacted you directly to try and resolve, but have had no reply unfortunately.
I am very confused by the person you describe in your review as someone capable of being that poor simply does not work at the Thatched although I think expressing frustration at not remembering who ordered what drink is a little harsh.
Whilst I understand that you are clearly annoyed at your waitress I would say the two hour wait for food is simply not true as this has never happened. I am sure it took too long and coupled with the bad service meant a poor evening and I am very sorry.
Please be assured that had you brought this to the attention of a member of the management team we would have done all we could to rectify, resolve and compensate for any issues.
I would love to speak to you directly to make amends and also try and identify to member of staff who needs further training.
Kind regards
Laurence

We visited on the 4th July when pubs were allowed to reopen. It was such a great experience, and the staff so friendly and helpful. There is an easy one-way system inside, everything sparkling clean and ordering food and drinks very efficient. We will be back!

I have been here a few times after friends took us here, the place has a warm welcome and is we’ll managed. The tables are well set, enough ventilation with Covid and you feel safe to enjoy a lunch or dinner there.
The service: The staff is as always very attentive and organised, the menu is great and they always have their suggestions ready. The staff knows what each course is and guide you through if and when needed. Service is also attentive from start to finish without being intrusive, and you never need to wait for long to have your glass refilled.
Food and Drink: The wine list is better than average compared to others and the menu has amazing and freshly prepared courses to please your tastebuds. Fish is fresh, the shrimp and mango starter is devine! The Seabass was great and the braised lamb is my favourite but you would be happy with anything on the menu. They also bend over backwards for the kids and the menu is good to take your little ones.
Go try as it is a true gem of a place!

Absolutely phenomenal roast dinner. Chef Steven Guntrip has put together the absolute BEST roast dinner I’ve ever had the privilege of eating. Lamb on the bone fell off the bone as it’s cooked to perfection. Roast pots are outstanding and you must order the cauliflower cheese! Started with a duck scotch egg and finished with a sticky toffee pudding, both were excellent and perfectly paired with incredible ingredients. I’m in such a happy place!
Thank you so much!

We called to request a table near the door as I had broken my foot and was on crutches, whilst my husband tried to find parking, I was left standing in the pub on crutches, clearly waiting to be served. nobody asked if we had a booking or if I could be helped at all. we were then led through the restaurant to the furthest table which meant I had to walk up and down stairs. our order was taken without any offer of side dishes or interest and we then received our food without the veg dishes we thought were included and told if we wanted them we would "have a long wait". My husband had roast lamb, at no point was he offered mint sauce or any condiments and I had the veg roast which was tasteless. Eventually we stopped someone to ask for condiments which were just dumped on our table without even teaspoons. there was no attempt to engage with us at any point, to ask if our meal was ok or if we would like anything else. the only time anyone spoke to us was to ask if we would like to add a gratuity or see a Christmas menu. terrible service, very very average food ( a bowl of boiled cabbage and raw swede was our veg) and a distinct lack of interest or concern in the customer. will not be returning and making sure all our local friends know about the experience we had.

No matter how many years I am in this business I don’t think i will ever understand why people use this platform as a stick in which to try and hurt businesses. Especially as a first review.
To clarify and explain how events actually transpired.
We had reserved you a table close to the door but you arrived an hour early so it was not ready. We quickly made another table ready but had to wait for those customers to leave. In the mean time we sat you in the bar waiting and offered you a drink. I apologise that parking was difficult, Sundays are the busiest day of the week, but clearly you were annoyed from the outset.
You describe having to “walk up and down stairs” there is one step into the restaurant. You say you were put on “the furthest table” your table was the only one free (as you were early) and was in the first section of the restaurant with at least 10 tables further away.
Roasted carrots and parsnips are served on the plate with roasts with mixed green vegetables on the side (including cabbage) The additional side dish you are referring to is cauliflower cheese, which is an extra on the menu, and which you did not order. Requesting this later will take a few minutes as has to be baked.
No teaspoons with the sauces my apologies but 1 star? You also describe the food as average yet you mark it at terrible.
Finally we do not include service unlike many restaurants but the staff do often mention the option is there if you wish. I make no apology for this.
I am genuinely sorry we did not live up to your expectation but in the cold light of day i hope you realise how harsh you have been with this review and also promising to let all your friends know just to try and do more damage.

We came here last saturday for a meal with friends for the first time. Clearly the pub is very old, so if you are over 6 ft tall you have to be very careful with banging your head!. I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and managers from the outset, they were attentive and made conversation. The food was excellent, and great value for the quality of food that we had. I chose the Calves liver, beautifully cooked with really well made bubble and squeak too. Decent beer and good priced wine on the list. I had not heard of this place before but i will definitely come back here and would absolutely introduce different friends to this place.

I have dined here three times and never been disappointed. You can choose to sit in formal restaurant area near the kitchen (viewable at the pass) or sit more in the pub itself near the bar. In summer I’ve eaten bar snacks outside. Lovely beef roast with all trimmings on Sunday. May try the lamb next time based on good reviews here. They have plenty of helpful staff here. The ‘Berkshire bitter’ is brewed especially by Windsor and Eton brewery. Low ceilings do watch your head!
