I can honestly say that a visit to the Cricketers in Cardiff is a really enjoyable experience... Been here many times now and there's always a friendly welcome, a good choice of reasonably priced food and drink that is always served well.. The staff are really friendly and add to the general good feel of the Cricketers On match days it can get very busy (and quite noisy) but don't let that putt you off it's still one of the best places for a beer and a meal

Wow......what incredible efforts Jamie (the manager) and team have made to get the garden reopen following COVID lockdown. Last Friday I went with my family to enjoy a STUNNING lunch in the sunshine. Not only that the steps they have taken to protect safety are outstanding. From the moment we arrived we had the highest level of attentive service. Drinks were served within 5 mins and starters shortly after. There is absolutely nothing I can suggest to make the experience any better. The three of us all agreed the food and service was top notch 😋. It says it all when exactly the same staff are serving from three years ago when I discovered this food paradise. Please respect this pub and don’t let them down by booking and not turning up. They are not taking walk ins so you have to book. Hospitality has never needed customers more, so please don’t mess them around. Cardiff would be a sad place if we didn’t all make efforts to support wonderful places like this. I’ve already booked for another two visits. Can’t wait!! Yesterday I went to another pub on Cathedral road and after £35 so so disappointed. Only had a burger, which was oozing blood raw served in a box not a plate and two glasses of wine. The experience of the two pubs could not be further apart and The Cricketers is by a million miles the winner! Seriously Jamie and the team, thank you and keep doing what you do. We all really appreciate it

My first visit to the Cricketers, and what a treat. Would highly recommend the Sunday roast was lovely, plenty of everything and the lamb was so tender and lean. Staff very friendly and accommodating and the setting very relaxing too. Cant wait to return. I would go as far to say one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had. Pity I didn't have room for dessert. Prices are very good too, which is always a bonus.

I really enjoyed the meal apart from some on my roast potatoes felt some deep fried there was no potato left. The drinks were all off and needed replacing which took ages and when i complained about the roast potatoes i was told thats how they ere cooked, some were ok but others were solid fat. No offer of a replacement potatoe. The waitress by this time was annoyed with us complaining and got a bit rude. I really enjoyed the rest of the meal but i find that they take in too many customers at one time and the service really falls. Its not cheap and i expect better.

I’ve been to the cricketers a few times for food and normally LOVE the Sunday roast but was really disappointed when I went last week. We got seated at 2pm and got informed that they were out of beef and lamb (at 2pm on a Sunday?!) so we all begrudgingly went for the pork dinner with Yorkshire puddings. The meal came with no Yorkshire pudding or stuffing. The waitress then said they were all out but didn’t bother to tell us. So basically we had 2 slices of pork, frozen veg, 2 roasties and a spoonful of gravy for £17.00. When complained to the manager he said he would take my email and number for a refund but surprise surprise I haven’t heard a thing back.

We happened to get in for Sunday lunch because of the terrible weather causing people to cancel, and we're sure glad we did. Amazing Yorkshire puddings, and overall just an excellent meal. Pleasant server and good beers to boot.

Dreadful meal here today, know there are obstacles for staff to overcome during this time but the food should be decent ... we were recommended the Cricketers by friends and travelled a fair distance to go there to meet up as a family but sadly very disappointed. The food was cold, overcooked & tasteless and apart from one member of staff ( admittedly they were rushed off their feet as think the restaurant had massively overbooked - lots of other groups complaining) the rest were very surly particularly the manager, to be honest we couldn’t wait to leave ... doubt we will go again and shame as we were really looking forward to a nice meal out.

Always loved this pub as the food and service has always been fantastic however we left totally disappointed! We waited at the door for at least 10 minutes before even being acknowledged, we were then shown to a table where we waited a further 20 minutes for a drink. The food was below normal standards, the fish and chips was so greasy I couldn’t eat it. Staff in this place have always been so friendly and welcoming but on this occasion each one seemed as though they didn’t want to be there. Would I return? Probably not…..

I'm dreadfully sorry to hear that we let you down on this occasion foodie20212021. Service is the most important quality in any establishment, and to see that you felt that the staff didn't even want to be here is inexcusable and truly disheartening. If you would please give me a call on 07375544014 I would like to see this corrected, and show you how passionate we are about what we do. Kind Regards, Joe

Starter was fig and goats cheese tart which was cold, we weren’t sure if it was meant to be cold as it was stone cold… not good. Then one child’s food came and they forgot about the others then when it came later it had gravy on which they did change and then comes the disparity between both children’s dinners. One came out with crispy skin on chicken and one didn’t, one with red cabbage and one didn’t, one with a parsnip one without, one with stuffing and one without. Had to share missing items out between bowls so they had little bits instead of proper portions but we didn’t want to say anything as they looked so unhappy when we mentioned that we asked for them without gravy. Seemed to forget about serving us mains, the children had finished their food and we were still waiting, then two of 3 adults had finished their food whilst 3rd was still waiting. We cancelled this meal in the end as we were waiting so long between the starters and the mains and then the 3rd main... Brisket was with so much fat and situ couldn’t eat it, it was chewy and cold, mash potato was not good, again mostly cold, roast potatoes were good and red cabbage was good but all the food was cold with warm gravy on top. Disappointing and wouldn’t return.

Friendly pub with first class food, and excellent service. We arrived late for Sunday lunch, the food was fresh and tasty and service very efficient and pleasant. Dishes beautifully presented and well served.

Very disappointing. Lack of atmosphere. Ordered food which took over 25 minutes for a fishcake and a burger, no one else ordering food. Asked for a glass of water for a lady, barman brought in a pint glass that was absolutely filthy, covered in lipstick and dirty marks.Food was barely warm and substandard and overpriced, as in a burger with no chips and salad which cost £14 !.Young boy behind bar who didn't seem to know anything. Will not be going there again. There were good reviews pre covid, but seems to have gone down since.

Summed up as crap frozen reheated food, small portions, expensive, not child friendly meals. What a shame as it’s a lovely venue, although if you sit outside the air con units constantly click and bang like someone’s playing swingball next to you! If you order burger and chips, that’s literally all you get! The cheeseburger is a reheated frozen pattie that’s dense and chewy. The double cooked chips again taste like frozen reheats, are no way what you’d expect of double cooked chips being hard and not that crispy. It’s a very small portion of chips, say 8-10 in a pot and that’s all you get. There’s no garnish, no coleslaw, not even an onion ring. Really mean portions and on a large plate so the burger and pot of chips is really underwhelming to see as it arrives. The fish was nice. Mushy peas were a gloop of congealed green and enough said about the famous pot of 8-10 chips. The child’s burger is the same adult burger without the burger garnish! Another thick frozen pattie. It’s way too thick for a child and the uniform burger size and identical chips (kids want fries) enhanced the microwaved frozen food feel. Deserts are thawed frozen fruit and thawed frozen pastry. Everything is tasteless, feels horrible to eat, looks rubbish on the plate and costs top prices. Ive been back here a few times and it’s always a let down. I guess I’m hoping they’ll change but they never do. Won’t be back again. I wonder when the last time the manager or staff sat and ate here as paying customers. I bet never, as there’s no way they would they pay for that food. Please start cooking fresh food and get a chef who cares. Even the serving staff looked fed up.

First visit to this establishment. Although the food was ok, bit disappointed with the presentation. Ordered a Sunday Roast sharing board expecting an actual board with meats and veg laid out on it but instead received a plate with everything on it and the gravy poured all over. Just how do you share poured gravy? Asked for separate gravy jug which arrived promptly. Service was lacking with no one coming over to ask if we wanted desserts so we paid at the bar and left to go have desserts at Coffee #1 instead. Not sure I would visit again.

We were really looking forward to visiting and having a Sunday Roast (having booked in advance) When we turned up we were told there was a booking glitch as we’d booked online however they could squeeze us in. When we first got seated the service was excellent and can’t fault the starter which was lovely. However both food and service went downhill from there. Our roast dinners came, presentation was lovely however food wasn’t very warm, meat was dry, parsnips hard and the gravy was very watery. After our plates were taken away that was the last anyone spoken to us, we all wanted dessert and further drinks but no one came to take our orders. Our waitress decided to focus her attention on a large group. We even went to the bar to order another drink however this failed to turn up and after waiting 40 mins without being spoken to we decided to ask for the bill and leave without any further drinks or dessert. Not sure I would go back after this experience with disappointing food and service. They really need to think about treating all table sizes the same and look at gravy/keep food hot.

The Cricketers, as befits its name, is close to the Sophia Gardens ground and is around a mile from Cardiff Central station on foot. We had booked a table for three at seven o’clock on a Friday evening but due to the early finish of the cricket, we were a little early but were accommodated at half past six. We ordered our food and drinks at the bar as there is no option to order from your table. The pub is in the Good Beer Guide and the ales we sampled were very good. To eat, I had Chinese style duck croquette with a savoury sauce to start. For main, I had sirloin steak with chips and affogato for dessert. The duck croquette was pleasant, the steak pretty ordinary but the affogato bore no resemblance to what I’d expected. No ice cream, but some kind of biscuit in alcohol with black coffee to pour over it. Not great. Although it didn’t seem that busy, service was generally quite slow and the cost at £38.50 per head including service was, I thought, a little too much.
