Very friendly and helpful staff. Sitting area spacious and very clean. Food outstanding. Following poppadoms and chutneys we both had sheek kebabs for starters, outstanding. For our main my wife had a lamb shank dish (Raan Akbari) which had a delightful spicy coating and a...delicious hot sauce. I had a curry dish (Murgh Lababar) which had large chunks of chicken in a rich spicy sauce with fluffy boiled rice. Also we had a side dish of spinach with mushrooms and garlic ( Saag Khumb), again absolutely delicious. First time we have been to the Purple Poppadom and it won’t be the last time.More

Outstanding meal at the restaurant Sunday 20/8. As always the dishes we ordered were prepared using the best ingredients & cooked to perfection.

I had high expectations of this restaurant having heard such wonderful reviews. However, my boyfriend and I were left feeling very disappointed. We ordered the taster menu as we wanted to sample a wide range of dishes. Our meal came to £210 in total and...was definitely not worth the price. There were a couple of tasty courses but most were very underwhelming. The king prawn was delicious and the main course curry was nice but the initial course and the 2 dessert courses were bland (coconut curry was way too creamy and lacked depth). The focus seemed to be on presentation rather than flavour. The waiter did a terrible job of explaining what each dish was so we had to guess what we were eating. He also slammed the plates down on the table a little too aggressively. Despite an initial speedy service, we waited over an hour for the main course as they forgot about us. When we checked when our meal would arrive we were given the excuse that the restaurant was busy. The decor was pleasant but nothing to write home about and there were people dining wearing shorts and flip flops, so if you’re planning on wearing something smart you might end up feeling a little overdressed. In short, we will not be returning.More

Have been visiting here for many years, consistently excellent. Food is fresh, flavoursome and it’s clear from the deep taste and presentation only the finest ingredients are used.

This is an excellent place. The food is based on traditional ingredients and recipes but the execution and presentation are first class. The starters (a selection of street food), main (prawn biryani with a pie crust to keep it moist) and pudding (Belgian chocolate samosas,...although the menu names them more imaginatively) were all superb. It’s a bit of a surprise when you arrive in a somewhat run down urban street and go upstairs to reach the restaurant. But we all know that appearances can be deceptive and once you’re in you’ll won’t regret it for a moment.More

We walked from the city center (20-25 mins) and it was worth it. (We’d probably UBER next time.) Second floor quiet dining room. A special paneer starter was excellent. The nawabi chicken served with succulent thigh meat was completely delicious. Perfectly spiced. Don’t expect takeaway...prices. This place has a good reputation and it is certainly deserving.More

A first visit to this well-reviewed Cardiff restaurant. The restaurant interior is very tasteful, spacious and comfortable, but I went in with a degree of trepidation following my dire taster experience at the now demised Moksh in Cardiff Bay. But I went for it anyway,...with the wine pairing, which at the best part of £90 was no small investment. The amuse bouche had a small cup of a spicy, foamy soap, and was a very tasty and positive start to things. The second course was the best - the sauce with the scallop left a pleasant lingering spicy twang, and the king prawn was well spiced and perfectly cooked. Third course of duck in a coconut sauce was interesting, and fourth course of chicken tikka and sheek kebab was a familiar Indian restaurant staple. The main course was pleasant, and I would certainly have their Aloo Bhindhi again. The desert was too chocolatey for me, but others at the table scoffed it down (including my portion). Was it really a wine pairing, or just a different wine for each course? Plenty to drink, so I can't grumble at all, but I suspect I would have been better off sticking to the Cobra. I left feeling like I had eaten well, but as with every tasting menu I've ever had I'm not sure that it represented value for money. I'm sure I'll be back, at which point I'll choose a starter and a main course with a naan bread, and be confident that I'll be very well fed for around half the price.More

I have been travelling around the UK in search of the best restaurants that serve Indian, Bangladeshi food. As I was in Cardiff for the day, I decided to make a last-minute booking here, and they were able to squeeze us in early doors. The...service is impeccable, and they are all well turned out in great shirts . They'll even come and say hello and called me by my name, which is a small touch that goes far. The poppadoms were a great start with three amazing homemade dips. I ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, which was probably the finest lamb I have ever tasted in a curry. A spicy gravy like sauce that was delicious. The other dish was Murgh Lababdar, and again, the quality of chicken was as good as it gets. This had a real kick to it, and I crunched on one of the chillies in sauce and had an instant sweat, but the sauce was out of this world. The Chenin Blanc wine was good and we even tried the home-made Chocomosa Anand that was top notch. We cannot wait to return with friends and I'd rank this as one of the finest Indian restaurants in the UK.More

We enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Purple Poppadom. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food a fascinating blend of flavours, textures and tastes. There is a delightfully short menu but it has a range of dishes to suit all tastes. There are...about 7 or 8 starters, and possibly 10 main courses with a great range of vegetables and breads, every dish appeared to be cooked to order. When the food was served the waiter explained the dishes to us. Between us we had vegetarian dishes, chicken and seafood dishes every one was outstanding. I think on our next visit we might try the taster menu. There is a cocktail menu and a good range of soft drinks, wines, beers and spirits availableMore

Excellent food, and really good service for a big group (there were about 14 of us). The food is a bit more expensive than some other restaurants but completely worth it. We plan to return soon for the early bird thali menu.

We travelled for over an hour to go to purple poppadom for a special occasion. First impressions were that the restaurant was a little bit underwhelming and dated, there are so many restaurants these days that have lovely decor and ambience but this didnt, however...the staff were attentive and pleasant. We ordered the taster menu which was 7 smallish courses and some of it was nice but again a bit underwhelming. I felt it was overpriced perhaps my expectations were too high who knows? Overall it was a pleasant night but would I visit again...no.More
