This evening I went to Nishimura to continue the ongoing mission to find the best Japanese restaurants wherever I happen to be. Why am I in Swansea? My daughter is swimming in a competition at the Wales National pool on Saturday and Sunday and sushi is her favourite (for now, at least). These days, when I ask what she would like to eat if it could be anything in the world, the answer is always sushi. The bar is set very high, we have visited Cafe Japan in Golders Green in London, and Shiki in Norwich, two places that are, in our opinion, the benchmark for Japanese food, so it needs to be good to get a rating. I called first at 6pm to try and book a table. The man said that 7pm was not possible could we do 8 instead, I said that was too late how about in 10 minutes time? He told me that if we came now it would be ok, so we hurried along. The reviews I read said that the place was small but extremely worth waiting for, the first part was no exaggeration. The place is the size of a standard shop, half is taken up with a serving counter and the other side contains one long trestle table with benches along both sides. Each diner is permitted just enough space to eat, the result is a compact but workable solution to the space issue. While we were eating, my daughter mentioned how quiet the place was, and it was then that I noticed. The clientele were murmuring quietly to their companions across the table, there was no rowdy or loud talk or laughter. The conversations that I could overhear were mostly about how good the food was, but I couldn't hear a lot. As we were hungry, and as we are quite greedy too we ordered a lot including some of our favourites. All in the interests of comparison of course. We ordered miso soup, tempura oysters, mixed sashimi, mixed nigiri, agedashi tofu, sunomono, and for a main course I had unagi don, eel on rice, and my daughter had chicken teriyaki don. Everything was delicious, the fish tasted fresh and was served beautifully with a decorative bonsai-type tree on the tray. My unagi was one of the high points of the meal, the eel flavour and the sauce seeped into the rice and gave it a delicious taste and consistency, perfect for eating with chopsticks. On the rare occasions when my daughter's mouth wasn't full of food she declared it to be delicious, not quite Shiki, but excellent nonetheless. That may sound like damning with faint praise but you would have to have eaten at Shiki to know that for her to mention anywhere in the same sentence as Shiki is to raise it to a revered place.

I ordered a takeaway from here on our impromptu stay in Swansea due the storm , and I strictly cannot eat gluten and dairy so I’m always nervous about ordering takeaways and expect there to be no options however I phoned the restaurant and they were very hot on gluten free, they told me to specify gluten free when ordering online and they would be able to make things with gluten free soya sauce. I ordered a few things including a miso soup and almost instantly they phoned me to inform me that the miso soup was not gluten free (very reassuring to know they were checking and knew) so I ordered something else instead with it , and delivery was fast and it was absolutely delicious. Shame we don’t live locally because I would definitely order again! Very happy with my meal.

Delicious food as always, but up until lockdown we've always eaten in, tonight we had an amazing takeaway. Sadly a huge amount of single use plastic. I know the boxes can be reused but still for 2 of us we had about 12 pieces. Please Nishimura can you use the old fashioned aluminium trays with cardboard lids. Thanks for gorgeous good though

My husband surprised me with a Japanese takeaway as he knew I was fancying some sushi. Took over 2 hours and 45 mins to arrive, by which time it was close to 10pm and we were passed hunger. He had ordered a mixed sushi for us to share, but they instead gave us a box of raw fish on its own, which I can't eat because I'm pregnant. Extremely expensive for what you get. Won't be ordering from here again. As other customers have advised; they need to stop taking orders when they are already behind on deliveries.

The Owners "Frank and Grace" underpay and overwork their delivery drivers. They treat them like cattle and demonstrate no compassion or empathy when issues are raised.
Construction has started in the dining area of the very small restaurant. An issue was raised regarding the potential of ASBESTOS EXPOSURE as the floor has been taken up revealing a mysterious rocky compound.
Drilling has taken place in this unconfirmed substance, the council has been notified of the issue, and will hopefully test the floor to make sure that asbestos fibers were not released into the air. This may be too little too late as the restaurant yesterday 03/08/2020 was covered in dust and bits of rubble - they were allowing customers into the property and letting them wait.
There should have been an R & D report for the possible asbestos and there is not one.
Be cautious and remember that your pre-cooked food is being prepared in an environment such as this.
Please do not forget the total disregard for your Health and Safety by the owners as there are violations everywhere.

We visited Nishimura in mumbles this evening and it was probably the worst experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant! Upon arrival even though we booked it was like we had inconvenienced them. The food order came within five minutes and was so rushed and not fresh! A five year old could of done better sushi that’s all I’ll say. We had to send tuna back because it wasn’t fresh, very grey and tasted sour! Zero apology! They even bought us the bill before we finished our bottle of wine so had to leave with a half full bottle! I will never come to this establishment again!
Zero ambience, it’s like being sat in the front room with the big light on!
3 of us with a quick 30 minute rush service was £92! Disgusting!
My friends daughter who is 8 commented “wow that waiter hates his life doesn’t he” purely because he was so rude and miserable!
Avoid avoid avoid!!!

Booked a table, turned up on time, ordered food 15 mins later - 1 starter, 3 sides, 1 main. Waited 30 mins, then the main appeared. Over the next 20 minutes, asked 3 waiting staff about our missing food, ended up getting 2 out of 3 dishes within the hour. Manager comped us 2 free drinks. Apologies from several members of staff but it was dreadful service. Had to ask for a refund for the dish we never received.
Food was good but did not make up for paying £50 for dreadful service. Don't bother going there, save your money by getting a takeaway and having all the dishes turn up when they should.

stopped in for lunch and I had a steaming hot Donburi bowl (tasted just like in japan) and my friend had a katsu bento box brimming with all the trimmings. We also shared some tempura and gyosa. Easy to order, food came quickly and they asked if we wanted it in courses or all together which was nice. Very pretty decoration inside as well.

really nice food but to be completely honest we wasn’t happy with the service with the “all you can eat” You get 1hour 30 mins to eat/order and wait for the food. The wait per order was 20 odd minutes and it took 30 mins for our food to come out. So all you can eat wasn’t really worth it as half the time you’re waiting for someone to either take your order or to give you your food. We only got to order twice and our time was up. Waited 25 minutes for my drink. I felt like the all you can eat sounds good but with the waiting we definitely didn’t get our value for money. If the wait wasn’t so long then it would be great but we did wait a long time between ordering and ended up going to McDonald’s on the way home after spending £80+ on food🥲

What an awful experience having booked a table at 8.30pm in the ‘restaurant’. More like a canteen, extremely brightly lit, and definitely not a pleasant dining experience!
We ordered promptly, and starters arrived speedily, but halfway through our main course, the staff started mopping the floors with buckets around our feet!!!! Unbelievable!!
We were told that the kitchen had closed when we tried to order a dessert at 9.10pm.
We were then chivvied to the desk to pay, whilst our table was cleared completely, even our unfinished wine!
DO NOT book a table after 8pm or you will not have time to eat it!
The staff and manager are clueless about any sort of dining experience, just take your money and can’t get you out quick enough!!
Food is ok ….. they should just concentrate on takeaways, or re-name their establishment as a ‘diner’ or cafe.

First time here, it was very clean, looked like it was cleaned regularly, the staff were very polite, helpful and friendly, answered any of our questions . Not a food critic but the food was very tasty and filling. When ordering the food it was very straightforward (even though it was online) the menu was neat and organised. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful and the interior was nicely decorated. Overall a very pleasant experience, 9.5/10 would come here again.

Paid for the all you could eat which only allows you to order more dishes once you’ve finished previous plate and I understand why that is in place, but ordered my first dish and it was truly awful. Asked if I could change it as I’d only had one bite and was told they would take it back and add more spice/sauce to it and I would have to finish that before ordering anymore. I was furious and refused to eat it. Charged £32 for the all you could eat and ate nothing because they just didn’t have the understanding of customer service, it’s all about the cash and you can sense it! Worst food and worst experience. I will never go back there. Any other restaurant would take away a dish you didn’t want and offer you something else! That would be the decent thing to do. Or at least take it off my bill!!

Visited for lunch on a weekend break to the Mumbles (we often visit as have family here) and have to say I was really impressed; we eat a lot of sushi in varying countries. The chef’s special menu items looked lovely…we went for the Green Dragon (delicious) some tuna and avocado rolls and chicken gyoza to start - all really good! Pumpkin katsu curry was incredible as was the salmon teriyaki ramen and the yaki soba. Service was great and the staff, although some clearly new, were lovely! Great addition to The Mumbles!

Really enjoyed my first visit to Nishimura Uplands. Great service and a lovely environment. The food was delicious! My only qualm, as a vegetarian, is despite tofu being available as a starter, it’s not offered as a replacement on main meal dishes. I asked for a yaki soba to be made with tofu (rather than chicken or prawns) and was told that would cost extra. I also asked for chilli paste (available as standard for the spicy chicken yaki soba) but got told that would also incur an extra charge. Not ideal and felt like both of those things could have been easily catered for without additional cost. (It might seem a small thing but there is a huge vegetarian market and so the more inclusive restaurants can be, the better).

Despite having a reservation there was no table for us when we arrived and we had to wait (standing) for ten minutes while a table was cleared and people were shuffled around in order that our party of three could be seated.
Food was good but the service abysmal. Despite having our order repeated back to us, only two of the three starters arrived. We expected the other to come but it never did, and then the main course arrived while we were still eating our starter.
The sushi or maki rolls were enormous, making it awkward to eat them easily. We would have preferred six smaller but manageable ones instead of the four enormous ones.
As said before, nothing wrong with the taste of the food but the rest was atrocious.
We won’t be back .
