Pax: 2 adults Price: £65 for two mains, two desserts, 1 bottle of wine and two spirits. Food choices were few and far between on a Wednesday night in Inverary during Covid and even though it was holiday season it was very quiet. The George was recommended by our hotel and it was very busy. We managed to secure a table and our initial concerns surrounding physical distancing and hygiene protocols were soon put to rest as the place was very well managed. We had the special goulash and fish and chips. The fish and chips was great and the goulash was superb, one of the tastiest I've had so no complaints about the food. A bottle of wine went down well followed by a couple of very tasty deserts. We then followed this up with a couple of drinks at the outside beer garden that was also well distanced and managed. Difficult to assess how good restaurants are in these unusual times but I'd have no problem returning to this place for a meal and drinks.

We went to the George for lunch on Sunday afternoon and found the place to be rather busy but with tables available. Service was very quick. I wanted the small portion of seafood chowder but only the large was apparently available due to it being just after lunchtime, however the waitress advised that it would not be a problem providing the small portion if I still wanted it. It was delicious. My wife had a baguette and soup which was also delicious. Nice relaxing drink before heading back to the Loch Fyne Spa Hotel. Well done.

The staff at our hotel recommended this local pub for dinner on Saturday night and we loved it. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and the food was delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed my burger and my partner had the haddock, which he said it was delicious. To top it all, they had some live music going on that night and the locals were a really lovely bunch.

The food was good, and there’s a good wine list. The scallops were delicious but a little gritty. Our waitress was lovely but as we were seated close to the bar we had to listen to the gruff front of house manager bark orders at the staff. He was also blunt with us when we arrived informing us that we only had 90 minutes for the booking which we were not informed of prior to arriving. We felt rushed (as there was a wait between courses) towards the end which isn’t what you expect for a meal for two costing over £130 with drinks. There’s no bar area, though there is a ‘garden bar’ which is a short walk round the corner and is sheltered. Handy when you are turfed out and haven’t finished your drink!

As the title.... Food was adequate, nothing to write home about. Ordered from the early dinner/late lunch menu, steak pie, chips & veg, steak pie tasted of bisto with a tiny...tiny piece of pastry, chips where OK, veg was definitely frozen. Didn’t feel comfortable with the staff approach, were very brusque upon our arrival and when asking for the bill, think it was the manager. Ate food as quick as we could and left. Had a few drinks in the beer garden the next day not realising it was the same establishment, ambience & guy serving at the bar was much better. Would never return to restaurant however if ever in the area again. Giving 2 stars based on experience from beer garden, if had to rate restaurant it would be a zero.

This was to be a special birthday dinner for my wife. Although we were under Covid 19 regulations this restaurant failed to observe distancing between tables. The main was good, but when it came to dessert the service was so slow for other diners we decided to skip it to reduce the time exposed to other in the tighly packed room. The waiter didn't like this and was very rude, so we paid and left very disappointed.

Stopped in for some lunch on our way through The service was a joke and so was the lunch it was just a simple potato and leek soup but i have never tasted anything as bad and there was no sign of any potato or leek never mind taste, on the plus side the bread was good. When the waitress came to collect our bowls and asked if we where finished she must have noticed that the soup was hardly touched but never even ask what was up with the soup, must be used to seeing full bowls returned. Not the first disappointment in the George but will definitely be the last

Inveraray is known for its beauty and scenic location. It's a lovely place to spend a day, but a really dire place to visit if you are a vegan. The one vegan meal available at The George Hotel (a place that was not adhering very well to social distancing, nor did they ask us for our contact details the night we were there)was, quite frankly, disgraceful. Almost £10 for a few potatoes mixed with mushrooms, a couple of beans and a bit of rocket! A restaurant with an award-winning chef really needs to do better and provide properly thought out meals for people with all types of dietary requirements. There was no thought or care put into the vegan meal I had at the George.

This place was recommended to me on a visit to Scotland. We reserved on a Wednesday evening during August and wrongly assumed that they would be participating in the eat out to help out government scheme as everyone else seemed to be getting involved with it. I only enquired after ordering. After eating and paying for the meal, I asked the restaurant manager the reason that they were not participating. He told me that he had been informed by the management that this scheme was for restaurants that were struggling and that The George was not struggling. I then explained that if they were participating, I would have spent more on drinks and desserts and would have left a nice big tip for the waiting staff whom I assume were struggling over the past few months while furloughed. I also asked him if they were doing so well, why weren’t they reducing their prices in line with the VAT reduction and passing this on to their customers. I would like the management to explain to me why on earth they would not participate in this government financed strategy to get customers back into restaurants at a reduced price to help kick start the hospitality industry and bring back customer confidence. That they’re busy enough anyway is not a reason for me. It left a bad taste after the delicious food.

This was our first visit here after a number of years and it must be said that, despite refurbishment, it was a disappointment. On arrival the receptionist very offhandedly said our room was not ready without checking who we were nor the room number, not great for the hospitality industry. In the restaurant for lunch and dinner we were quite uncomfortable at the lack of mask wearing by the waiting and bar staff, only one of whom was wearing an exemption badge. Sanitising tables, chairs etc. after people had left was less than thorough. At dinner our main course was served before our starter. When we went to shower in the morning the shower control was loose and we could not get any water. At breakfast (all staff masked) the full breakfast was really poor, we would suspect all the fried elements had been cooked earlier and were being kept warm so had dried out and were hard. And when I checked the bill when I got home I noted that I had been overcharged for the two beers I had had, I had a pint then a half pint but charged for two pints. On a positive note the lunch and dinner main courses were well cooked and tasty. Regrettably it will be a long time before we visit The George again.

This was our first visit to the George and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. My wife is coeliac and the staff were made aware of this from the outset. They appeared to be very knowledgeable and certainly helpful and informed us that most of the dishes could be adapted which was great. We both chose cullen skink soup as a main. Our soups were huge and extremely tasty, both were served with garlic bread which the chef or waiter had overlooked the fact that my wife is gluten free, not a big issue and they said that they could replace it. A very traditional but comfy bar with plenty of character. They also have a great beer garden which we weren’t fortunate to use. Would happily recommend

We spend our annual romatic in Inverary and always dine at the George. This year the kitchen and bar staff were Polish and South Africans (per our waitress) My husband had grilled pork chops off the special board that was massive and awesome with a gravy sauce that was absolutely devine, pic attached. I had slow roasted ox cheek that was absolutely melt in your mouth with perfect veggies n the side. The only thing I could fault at all was the mash ith my ox cheek tht was lumpy, dry and useasoned, but had been creatively etched with a servng spon to look like the Sydney opera house- clever! All round pleasant staff, and consistentyl great food and good value for the money...always a treat to dine here!!!!

We were staying in Inveraray a couple of days and was recommended the George as a place to eat. Nice cosy bar for drinks and a lovely outside area too. The barman was very jovial, but then was dissing my choice of drink - maybe his type of humour. We asked in the restaurant if we could eat that evening and was told we would have to wait over an hour as they were fully booked till then. That was fine as we were happy to have a few drinks outside as the sun went down. When it got too cold to sit outside drinking we found the bar too packed to sit in, so we made our way to the restaurant side of the hotel. Even though there were barely any people in the restaurant we were told to sit in an empty room. The only saving grace was it had a lovely open fire. Not sure why we had been told it was fully booked with so few people in. When the bar finally had space we moved back in there as it had more atmosphere. Time to eat and we went back to the restaurant to be led into the still empty room. With the main part of the restaurant only half full we were not willing to sit alone and were prepared to leave if we weren’t found a seat with some atmosphere. There were plenty of good sized tables empty, but we were sat at a tiny table you’d expect in a bar. We didn’t mind as we were by an open fire and still warming up. Food was OK, nothing special. Hubby had a burger and I had fish and chips which (as you can see from my pic) we had to place diagonally as the table was too narrow to place opposite one another. Locals on the larger tables were chatted to constantly whilst we were there, yet we weren’t even asked if we wanted extra drinks when our glasses sat empty for most of the meal. We decided to get extra drinks and puddings from the COOP up the road as we really didn’t feel the staff here wanted our presence. Such a shame as it’s a lovely building. As you can guess we found elsewhere to have our evening meal the following day.

Food was fresh and tasty however on arrival didnt have a booking so front of house staff member advised could get a table for 75mins which knowing how quickly we eat was fine. However during mains was confronted by front of house to be told we shouldn't have been given menus and asked to give the name of staff member who had given us the menus (for staff retraining) which was completely unprofessional and shifting the blame from himself. Hurried finishing meal and was told the other people who had table booked were here so hurry up basically so had to finish our drinks very quickly. We left the restaurant an hour and 5 mins after we left so his overreaction and need to shift the blame to other staff was highly unnecessary and what has prompted me to write this review in the first place.

We had the most wonderful lunch today at the George Hotel, the service was very quick, the food arrived piping hot, and was extremely tasty. The pricing was very good too, toilet facilities were spotlessly clean, we were made to feel very welcome. Thanks to all
