Moby dick supper

Great service and adhering well to Covid restrictions. Not the cheapest chippie i have been to but lovely and fresh and superb portions... didn't get much of my husbands "sharing" fish supper though which looked like Moby dick had surfed in on his chips!

Best Fish and Chips Ever

The fish and chips from here was just perfect. The batter was crispy and flavourful, the fish was fresh and the chips were tasty. The staff were clearly under a lot of pressure as they had lots of customers waiting, but maintained a sense of humour. They were very accommodating despite being busy.

Quick service and great meal at a good value. The batter was really light and the fish was fresh and nicely fried. The chips and mushy peas were yummy as well. Good portion size.

Disgusting and expensive

We got takeaway large Haddock and chips, small haddock and chips, Large single cod and a small cod and chips, food looked disgusting very greasy fish had a weird slimy bubble batter on it never seen the likes of it before, and was very unedible, chips were slimy greasy you could actually pour the grease and oil of them worse is it cost £45 for them. We had also been out on a road trip as a family from falkirk to Inverary and thought we would go a detour up to oban for some fish and chips for dinner. We came back home after travelling 3 hours home hungry, tired and feeling sick from the experience here. We will never be back.

More a restaurant than a Fish and Chip Shop!

We spent a few days in Oban and this unpretentious Fish and Chip Shop was so good that we went there several times, as well for lunch as for dinner. It looks like an ordinary Fish and Chip Shop but in the back there are several tables where Certainly in the evening it was always very busy which meant that one had to wait a bit longer for the waiter to help you. But it truly was worthwhile! What we took each time was the Oban Chowder : full of fresh fish, creamy, tasty! Just great! Not that the other dishes were disappointing, certainly not, but the Chowder is really exceptional. And the prices are correct. I just regret that we couldn’t match these nice dishes with a nice wine as this Fish and Chip Shop doesn’t serve any alcohol.

Only chip shop I've ever craved!

This chip shop has served my family every trip up north over the years and again, I was not disappointed. Very busy place and social distancing is in place. I ordered the haddock and tiger prawns because I could not decide on only one🥰 Got home made garlic mayo with them as I asked for it and I'm only gutted its so far away! Wish I could get fresh fish like this closer to home. Couldn't fault it. Crispy, well seasoned and not too oily. Can't wait to come back again

Visited in October and thought we would visit what the board outside said was the best fish and chips in Oban. Sorry to say very disappointed had scampi and chips and while ithe scampi was edible the chips were barely cooked waited what I thought was a very long time as the chippy is attached to a dining in restaurant next door and even though we were the only customers they didn't hurry to serve us. Definitely wouldn't return.

You have posted this review to the wrong chip shop. We do not have a board outside our shop stating that we are the best in Oban. The chip shop that has the said board would be “Norries chip shop” and just for the record that claim is false advertising.

Welcoming staff serving first class food

We arrived in Oban after a long drive and all we wanted was a quick bite to eat. Not only did every restaurant turn us away claiming they were fully booked even though we could see tables free, most establishments were very unfriendly. Just before we gave up we decided to just try one last place, for fish and chips. What a welcome. What an amazing dinner of scallops and king prawns and fish. We were permitted to use the toilet facilities which was great. Huge thanks to the staff and or owner who made us feel welcome in Oban and fed us the best food Oban has to offer. In essence we won’t rush back for any other food establishment except this special place. Highly Recommend Thanks again

Outstanding scallops and chips

Had battered scallops and chips on a sunny evening. The scallops were divine, not overdone at all, superb flavour as you'd hope for in Oban. And probably the best chips I've ever had from a chippy - hot and crisp. Why can't all chippies do chips like this, they don't have to be soggy or greasy! Pricey - four big fat scallops and chips were sixteen pounds 50 - but the experience was worth every penny.

Nice fish and chips, not the friendliest of staff

Nice fish, crispy batter. Chips were well cooked, Mushy peas ok. Food was quite nice but the staff especially the chap that was frying the fish were not very pleasant. This would stop me going in again. Respect goes both ways. Customers should respect staff and vice versa. And at £18.40 for 2 fish chips and peas it on the expensive side. Shame because if the staffs attitude matched their food it would still be value for money.

The covid experience.

The wife and I come here every time we visit oban. We decided that we would visit again and have our dinner at lunch time. The seating area was quite quiet which suited us with a big party leaving as we arrived. We were furnished with menus right away.We looked over the choices and decided that we would both have a fish tea.We asked for beans instead of peas it was no bother to swap. Out came the fish with a generous portion of chips and I had tartar sauce with mine adding to the flavour. We both enjoyed our food to the point that I would go as far as to say they still make the best fish and chips ever. Roll on our next visit. We would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Expensive and not worth the money

We were recommended this place but it didn't live upto expectations. The food was alright but certainly not the best chip shop I've ever visited. The customer service certainly isn't very good, no proper queuing system, no table service and the food took a while. The food was very greasy and the battered quite soft. It cost over £17 for 1 fish supper and 1 battered pizza supper and 2 bottles of juice but it certainly wasn't worth that price. We wouldn't rush back!

Very disappointing fish. Lots of batter hiding a fairly small portion of fish. Had a strong fish smell and taste as if not very fresh. Curious that it says on shop window “Best fish and chips I’ve tasted” Rick Stein. That was back in 2002 so think this fish and chip shop needs to stop dining out on something from 19 years ago. Come to Yorkshire we’ll show you how fish and chips should be done

Chaos and confusion

The chippy and sit in were busy and we thought that was a good sign, we were wrong! We came looking for the award-winning lobster dish that we saw advertised that day, how disappointing that they actually haven’t had any lobster on the menu for years, that’s just false advertising guys!!! We didn’t wait too long for our food but our order was completely wrong! I was actually embarrassed that I brought my family here, they came all the way from America and the only staff running around crazy were two very young kids, I reckon no older than 15? God did they have a lot to do, they are been taking advantage of, the take-away wasn’t any better, the guys there looked bewildered and confused. This chippy is nothing other than that, “A CHIPPY”. The menu is underwhelming and the restaurant is seriously under staffed.

We are all in agreement this is the best Fish & Chips we've ever tasted!!!!

Myself, my wife and our son were on a visit to Oban from Glasgow and we had a notion for fish and chips, we passed the 'Oban Fish and Chip Shop' on George St and thought we'd give it a try. We saw a quote in the window from the famous culinary fish expert Rick Stein stating ''This is the best Fish and Chips I've ever tasted'' but even then we weren't prepared for the quality of food. It was outstanding!! All 3 of us agreed this was the best Fish and Chips we'd ever tasted.. After finishing our 3 x fish teas I actually asked if there was a secret to getting the fish to taste so good and so fresh..one tip we were given was their use of rapeseed oil. We cannot praise highly enough the quality of food here. If you don't believe this to be the best Fish and Chips you've tasted I'd be amazed!
