We went to this place for our two-year anniversary and it was indeed a very pleasant experience. The dishes are quite elegant and very good quality fishes, although maybe a little bit expensive. The staff was very nice and flexible: we had booked a table a long time in advance and unfortunately they gave us a table that was not in front of the window with sea view; however we kindly asked if we could change to be placed near the window as soon as a table was available, and they moved us very quickly so we could enjoy the sunset and view on the port! Very much appreciated and we had a great time. I did not put 5 stars because you need to be very lucky if you want to have a table with sea view, and the food is maybe a bit overpriced.

A perfect experience. On a quiet night in Oban, this place was still busy and deservedly so. A great menu, with some fantastic local produce and every dish we chose was perfectly executed. Great flavours, perfectly seasoned, well presented and with enough innovation without any pretension. Portions were spot on. Service was attentive but not intrusive and by a team who gave the impression that they knew their stuff and cared! I mention this because it’s actually rare. There was a mistake with my starter as I’d ordered scallops and oysters arrived but this was rectified perfectly by the front of house team. I really wish we lived locally and could visit more often. Thank you so much for a fantastic meal.

Just back from Oban and visited this restaurant this weekend. Not often I come away from a restaurant with a mixed review. Good things, location of restaurant, lovely, great views and decorated in a classy fashion. Good choice of different foods and wines to choose from. Overall very clean and smart looking place. Sadly here are the poor points, service very slow, believe we waited 20 before getting a bottle of water from ordering. Service of food was very slow. From time of ordering, (remember we had water, wine and a starters inbetween) it was 80 mins before we got our main. Yes sometimes nice to relax and take ones time but our on line booking it did say you can only have the table for two hours so we become to feel rushed as we like to have our food go down, have coffees and decide on if you have a dessert before handing back the table, due to slow service (we think this was due to restaurant being under staffed) we didn’t bother to stick around for coffee or dessert as forecasted we would have to wait another 20-30 before receiving coffees. Sadly a few other poor points, I asked for a new serviette for my main as the first was taken away with the starter, the waiter came back dump it on the side of the table, didn’t even look at me and carried on walking. Think he maybe in the wrong job. It felt abit rude and even my friend commented on it. Another poor point, I had the hot smoked salmon which was lovely but it was a full size salmon fillet making it a big starter, you may think this is odd to mention but I’ll explain, my friend had the garlic prawns, - she got three mid size prawns... remember I had a full size fillet of salmon vs three prawns, both dishes were a starter. Just a few changes on dish sizes and probably more staff would make this an amazing restaurant. Cost, two bottle of wine, four starters, four mains came to 180£. Intend to visit Oban again come spring summer as lovely place but service means a lot to me when paying good money so sadly won’t be returning to this restaurant unless my friends out vote me. As mentioned above, could be a amazing restaurant with just a few changes.

My wife and i visited the Waterfront on New year's day for an early bird meal as this restaurant was the second of two fish restaurants highly recommended . After being seated, we were ignored for about 4-5 minutes even though the restaurant was not busy. Eventually, we were given the menus and asked if a drink was in order before having had the chance to consider what dishes or wines we would consider. We decided on a seafood chowder and local mussels as starters and grilled haddock topped with a mature cheddar glaze and served over creamy mash and seafood risotto as our main courses, with a glass of merlot and water. The chowder, although hot, was almost lacking in flavour with no discernable seasoning. The mussels were very good however. The grilled haddock was a mixture as the haddock was dry and overcooked whereas the mash had a good creamy consistency and flavour. The risotto was a big disappointment. It lacked flavour and seasoning, had too much cream added so it felt as though one was eating a pureed rice soup. Whilst this may be a local tradition in cooking, the risotto was unlike any other I have eaten. Service was average overall with no service checks except as the dishes were cleared away. This is a major omission with most restaurants.

Had dinner in here 2 nights ago. I ordered the chowder to start and then scallops. My husband got squid and then fish theremador. My chowder wasn't cooked properly all I could taste was flour we told the waiter and he said he would tell the chef and take it off our bill. When the chef tasted the sauce he just shrugged his shoulders as if he couldn't care less. We also witnessed one of the chefs having an argument with the waiter and heard the chef calling him a very rude word. The scallops were lovely and my husband meal was average. The prices here are expensive compared to other places and when you pay these kind of prices the standard of food should be excellent which it's very far away from. To be honest I don't think the chefs could care less. Will not be back.

The oysters were very good indeed, but…..What? No red wine vinegar (and shallots)??! We asked for red wine vinegar and shallot dressing, but we’re offered MALT vinegar. I’m sorry, but malt vinegar simply doesn’t go with oysters. Tabasco was offered, which was fine. The staff are friendly, but seem to lack any understanding of a seafood restaurant. The salmon and capers arrived… with no capers. Overall, fairly average. Not sure 80s dance music lends itself well to a fish restaurant in the heart of the West Coast of Scotland. No one needs bagpipes, but maybe something more appropriate.

So, we were fortunate enough to reserve a table, this has always been one of our go to restaurants. It may seem strange to say the staff were friendly but over efficient! We were one of the first tables into the restaurant at 5.30. Within the first five minutes we were asked what we were going to drink, had we chosen from the menu, were we being seen to, all before my husband had removed his coat. We didn’t have time to choose having studied the menu. We chose a bottle of wine quickly, before it arrived our starters were on the table! No sooner had we taken the last mouthful and cutlery back onto the plates they were whisked away. We had to ask for five minutes to regroup before we had our mains! I recognise the need for table timings between customers but this was so super efficient it did detract from enjoying the food. The scallops as starter: two scallops beautifully cooked with a strange pot of various leaves, one small yellow tomato halved and four small pieces of cucumber, bit costly at £10.99. The sole was lovely but again with only three halves of new potato, literally one and a half new potatoes! Presented in a pretty pattern for £17.99. The fish was cooked beautifully, the staff were exceptionally attentive and polite. Just no atmosphere? We were certainly in the midst of an incredibly well trained machine, we just felt rushed beyond being efficient. The meal cost was £128, I’m not quibbling, but it was not enjoyable.

I think maybe I expected too much, but being called The Waterfront I hoped to be able to see the sea but we were stuck in a corner with an alley for a view and a load of staff paperwork on the chairs by the bar. The food was OK. I had the surf and turf salad - the steak strips were pretty chewy. The king prawns were overcooked, like little bullets. My husband had the sole, but it was quite bland. All the staff were friendly, but you could tell they were all brand new. Also the constant ringing of the bell on the pass by the chef was really annoying. I wouldn't go back.

Fast food pretending to be a good restaurant. We were in and out within 45 minutes and the food was tasteless and bland. We had the hake and prawn thermidor - the hake was ok, the prawns tasted as if they were frozen, and the thermidor sauce was, well a nothing really - just some sort of liquid on top of the fish. The batter for the cod cheek starter was thick and stodgy. Not recommended and can’t understand why it gets such good reviews. We will certainly not be returning.

We ate here for lunch and had a great value for money two course lunch special. I don’t eat fish but chicken dish was great and plenty of it, brilliant chips. She had fish and said it was fantastic. Manager was next to us having a meeting during our meal, as soon as he finished he was asking how we were and how was our meal, the young waitress was also very polite and she worked hard, food arrived quick. Both very helpful and chatty, highly recommend.

The first thing to say is: this place is pretty pricey. Most dishes are around £20, give or take. However if that is in your budget the food is very very good - I had the surf and turf salad which had steak, scallops, squid and king prawns, all of which were very generously portioned and it was a lovely meal that filled me right up (often not the case with a salad). The only thing I will say is I would have liked to have been offered the option to have my steak rare as it was well done, but lovely nonetheless. I also asked for my cocktail to be made with lemonade instead of soda which they kindly did, and recommended my partner a lovely wine as well. But the star of the show was our waiter! Sadly we did not catch his name but he was just fabulous and made us feel very welcome. Be aware they do not take tips on card!! Bring cash as you will definitely want to tip your server!!!!

We decided to have our last meal of 2019 here having visited once in 2014, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant had been renovated since our last visit, unfortunately we weren’t lucky enough to to have a window table but as it was already dark there wasn’t much view to take in anyway! The service was great and the seafood was incredibly fresh tasting and delicious. I would 100% recommend trying their smoked haddock and prawn Thermidor. It is served with spring onion mash and was the stand out dish for me.

The restaurant is situated between the CalMac ferry and the railway station and so doesn’t command uninterrupted sea or harbour views. We booked online for 5.30 and on the confirmation was that told the table had to be vacated by 7pm. We ordered promptly. Our main was served very quickly after our first course and we finished at 6.50, not allowing us time for a dessert and/or coffee had we wanted it. Waitresses were very friendly and service was good. However, we felt that we were in a school dinner sitting, rather than enjoying a relaxing treat of a meal. or romantic meal for two. The tables were quite close together, especially considering the pandemic. The food was quite good, but nothing to shout aloud about either. Altogether, it was disappointing mainly due to the rush caused by owners trying to make as much money as possible rather than to provide a pleasant dining experience.

We went to celebrate our sons 13th birthday and we all loved the meal. The chef even offered to make me a seafood risotto without salmon. Every single plate of food we had was amazing and we will definitely be returning next time we are in Oban. The staff were all so friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend as one of the best restaurants I have ever been to.
