We were staying in Broughty Ferry for a week's family break to coincide with our wedding anniversary and thought The Ship's menu and delightful setting made it the ideal contender for a celebration meal. Although the popularity of the Eat Out To Help Out budget scheme meant there was no availability for us on the day itself, we decided to book for our final evening a couple of days later and it was a glorious experience - lovely food at great value (full) prices, good choice of drinks, perfect service, Covid measures well set and adhered to, all to the backdrop of the most glorious view across the Tay. Highly recommended.

Great menu, mainly fish and burgers. Fish and chips delicious served with peas and chips, Crab salad with chips and a seafood sauce in a separate pot equally good, Burger was juicy and full of meat. View of the Tay was wonderful. Well done. Only disappointment was the table was not ready but it was soon rectified and other guests were quite loud at times.

We have tried not to have battered fish and chips here but this dish is just perfect. We always decide not to have fish and chips before we go but the meal is so good that we always end up having the battered fish and chips with peas it is so good. I think they have a tank out the back the fish is so fresh. Mr Spink does sell exceedingly good fish, even better meal than deep sea in Dundee and mr Spink owns this. Do not bother looking at menu just order haddock in batter or breadcrumbs you will not be disappointed. Waiters are good just the right side of attentive without being obtrusive. If you are lucky you will see the launch of the lifeboat, no longer launched down the rails unfortunately as lifeboat is permanently moored in the river, just not the same as ramp launch. Dining upstairs in restaurant or downstairs in bar, or if weather is ok, remember it is scotland, tables outside with superb views over the silvery Tay Decent wine list too

Thanks for your excellent review, it's much appreciated, I would however like to point out that our fish supplier of 20 years is Alex Spink & Sons of Arbroath, the owner of the Deepsea/Tailend restaurant in Dundee is a different Spink (it's a very common Arbroath name) Alex Spink's staff very kindly sort through all the boxes of haddock landed and select uniform sized and the best quality fish for us.

Had not been in some time. Booked an evening meal and we both ordered black pudding fritters which were dry and tasteless with garnish that tasted of plastic bag. I ordered lobster main and my husband ordered seafood basket. OMG!!! Both dishes were absolutely foul! The lobster was rubber and drowned in a foul sauce which was allegedly garlic. Seafood basket consisted of unidentifiable varieties of fish, apparently, but was all deep fried to oblivion. Awful experience and felt sorry for the waiting staff who took our complaints. They did reduce the bill by removing our 2 drinks each. Now we await the dodgy tummies even though 70% was returned to the kitchen. NEVER AGAIN.

I have owned this business for nearly 20 years and am used to receiving the odd irrational or vindictive review so I don't let them upset me too much as I am sure most folk will not be swayed by their contents. Firstly you complained about the seafood basket, when the waitress asked you if everything was fine with your meal you said you were not happy with the basket as it was all deep fried, it's listed under Ship Inn Fish and Chips and clearly states on the menu that it comprises Battered haddock, battered prawns, breaded cod bites and battered squid how did you think it would be cooked ? This dish is one of the most popular on the menu and on Tuesday when you were in we served 16 portions of it and everyone apart from you enjoyed it, yesterday we served another 14 of them and there was not one complaint. You also criticised the lobster and said it was drowned in a foul sauce, this was garlic butter which is served with the lobster and again this is clearly stated on the menu . You were not happy with the Stornoway black pudding fritters served with salad leaves and a plumb and apple chutney, once again all I can say is sorry you didn't enjoy it but we have served hundred of portions of this dish and your complaint is the first ever. Salad garnish that tasted of a plastic bag, well that's a first for me and finally you await the dodgy tummies well that's a libelous statement made without any proof or substance. Fortunately the table next to you on Tuesday evening also had lobster at exactly the same time as you and were served the other half of the poor maligned crustacean in question, having their contact details due to track and trace we telephoned them to get their opinion of the dish, the gentleman thoroughly enjoyed his meal and has also reviewed their meal which can be seen above. I would like to make it clear that as a locally owned independent business we will take on board any genuine complaints made in a civilised manner and work hard to address any faults on our part and also to satisfy our many loyal customers.

First of all, you will arrive here and find a sign telling you to go around to the side door. Once you reach this side door you will discover an “exit only” sign leaving you trapped outside indefinitely. Anyway once you’re in and seated the service is pretty standard but that’s the best service you will receive. We ordered our food and waited and waited. I understand kitchens can be busy, but half an hour when a place could have only had a few orders on was pushing it. Once we received our food we soon discovered it was bang average, £14.50 for a tiny chicken schnitzel is definitely NOT value for money, especially when you can go along to wetherspoons and get double the amount and enjoy yourself more. We were not asked how our food was and the only positive about the trip was the huge dessert portion size. I’ve been here once before and was looking forward to trying it again. However after this visit I will not be back and would not recommend it here to anyone.

Wonderful pub and restaurant, in the wonderful Broughty Ferry. This establish establishment does everything necessary to ensure your safely on your visit. Screens, one way system and staff wearing masks at all times. The decor is delightful, and with outside seating, you really couldn’t visit many places better, when in the area. Now food. As I had promised myself a dessert, I didn’t have a starter, Mike had the dusted squid, which I tried too, and it was light, crisp and fresh, and delicious, served with a slightly spicy mayo and a side salad. For mains I had the best and biggest home made fish pie I’ve every had in a restaurant, absolutely groaning with mixed fish and seafood, with the added bonus of egg, something that you rarely get, topped with creamy mash completed with a grilled cheese top. Mike have the seafood basket, which comprised of squid, haddock, prawns, and cod bites, coated in a light crispy batter, side salad, and to quote him indoors, the best chips he’d ever had! this also had two dips, sweet chilli, and tartar. I just about managed a dessert, home made sticky toffee pudding with toffee ice cream, which like everything else was delicious, and surprisingly light. All accompanied by a pot of tea for me, (heavy night the night before lol!), and a couple of IPAs for Mike. Such a lovely place, friendly folk, great decor, and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

It's been a while since eating at the Ship Inn but my overiding memory of my visit was the young fella who was serving as he was exceptionally friendly despite how busy the place was an was an absolute assett to the restaurant. Being in the CAMRA beer guide for a few consective years; you can guarantee a good pint there and the traditional restaurant upstairs serves decent food in a relaxed environment with great views out across the Tay. I went with the Soup of the Day, Abroath Haddock and Chocolate Brownie, a combination which was ill advised and duly rendered me sluggish and on the brink of unconciousness.

A brilliant location on the promenade area of Broughty Ferry, we booked this based on recommendations off trip advisor and were so glad we did. It was a last minute booking for 6 adults and 3 kids for a Saturday afternoon which we weren't sure they could accommodate but they were fantastic at getting us in and that afternoon we sat down in glorious sunshine outside the pub for our lunch. The menu is very extensive pub fare, with plenty choice for everyone. We had a mix of toasties, burgers, and fish specials, all of which were delivered within 30mins of ordering, all piping hot, and delicious. The burgers were all given a hearty thumbs up, while my haggis, cheese, and chilli jam toastie hit the spot. We never felt rushed or hurried through our meal, and someone was always around when we needed to order more drinks. Attentive service, great pub food, great prices, and a brilliant location to boot. Heartily recommend this to anyone

My husband and I were in for a bar lunch a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed our Battered Haddock and Cullen Skink so decided to return and book a table in the restaurant, going out to eat seems extra special just now as there isn’t much else to enjoy outside the house. Again, it didn’t disappoint, keeping in the festive mood after being greeted by the fab Christmas decorations, I chose Turkey with all the trimmings and my husband had the Steak and Ale Pie. Both very generous portions and delicious and we managed to share a Cranachan Panacotta for dessert. We will definitely be back to have another one of those.

My wife and I stumbled across this treat while visiting my mother who has been put into care in Broughty Ferry. Not knowing "The Ferry" (as the locals call it..) well, we were keen to explore and have a walk along the beach front to find somewhere for lunch. This quaint pub/restaurant caught our attention, right next to the Life boat quarters. As if the setting/view/location and situation wasn't enough, we were FAR more pleased as to what was in store for us. A warm welcome from smiley staff on a somewhat chilly and windy day was the perfect start to the experience. As a man who likes his beers and with the current alcohol restrictions etc the Ship Inn wasn't short of alcohol free options to choose from. I find it incredible how the hospitality industry has adapted to these rough times so well to continue pleasing the patron and keeping spirits alive. Famished, I was recommended the fish pie and veg and my wife had the Breaded Haddock with chips and salad. Portion sizes did not disappoint, we persevered and enjoyed every bite! Got some great local knowledge about Broughty Ferry from the jovial barmaid who seemed have customer service down pat. While maintaining an interest in how we were getting on with our meals, it didn't feel intrusive, just a healthy concern for our needs. Got a fair rundown of the business's history and when things return back to normal we can't wait to return for a proper ale and dine in their restaurant upstairs over looking the river Tay. I dare say we will be in the ferry frequently and the Ship Inn will be our first port of call and welcome return. Highly recommended! Iain and Moira

The go to place in Broughty Ferry for seafood, supplied by Spinks who do exceedingly good fish. Be warned the main courses are large. We were four hearty eaters and could not finish the main courses after the starters. The Cullen skink is wonderful, meaty and full of flavour but it will fill you up, I could not eat the bread and butter with it in case I could not eat all of the main course. Disappointed as the bread looked good but determined to eat all of main course. Well the smoked haddock stuffed with prawn and spinach were excellent but I could not make a dent in the excellent chips, dry and cooked properly, and the veg. my wife had the steak pie, Hugh and appetising, friend had lasagne it too was tasty We were all stuffed and could not finish all the main courses, did not even consider the puddings and I bet they were excellent too. Wine list good too, we had Chardonnay and Santa Rita both excellent Service perfect, waitress attentive and friendly, took the banter from us well, well we were out to enjoy ourself and the staff and food met our expectations. full marks to owner, staff and chef.

Visited last Friday evening with my friends. We were seated at a table overlooking the Tay which was lovely. The waitress was very friendly and looked after us extremely well. We all chose different main courses and we all enjoyed them I had the sea bass which was cooked perfectly. Portions were large and although initially you would think a bit pricey was well worth the money. Definitely worth a visit but book first as it’s very popular with the locals of Broughty Ferry We will definitely be returning

Being unsure of where to go for our anniversary, we decided on the Waterfront Restaurant at the Ship Inn after reading the menus on their website. We weren't disappointed. We pre-booked and on arrival were immediately shown to our table. The waitress gave us a menu each and asked what we would like to drink. The choice on the menu was vast, making it difficult to select. We eventually decided on the Ship Inn Fish Pie and the Seabass. The Fish Pie was absolutely scrumptious, containing Salmon, Tiger Prawns and Haddock in a white wine sauce, with a crispy topped mash. It was accompanied by a selection of vegetables. The Seabass was done in a Tempura batter and accompanied by Bombay potatoes, Mango Chutney and a mixed salad. This was excellent. For desserts we had a Coffee Pana cotta and a small helping of ice cream. The service was excellent. The whole experience was first class, topped by the view of the River Tay with the sun shining on it. We noticed that after they took the menus away, they were sprayed and wiped before handing them out again. Also immediately after people vacated their table, the table and chairs were immediately wiped down. Congratulations to all.
