We visited the Birkhill Inn for the first time in many years and the first thing we realised was that the decor and menu both haven’t changed significantly! Having looked on their website I knew there was a separate vegan menu which we weren’t offered and had to ask for once seated. They have a couple of burgers - one meat style and one bean and the two vegans in our group ordered one of each. Both were pleasant if unexceptional. We did order the vegan sticky toffee which was amazing! It came with a standard Swedish glacé ice cream but the pudding and especially the toffee sauce were amazing! Service was attentive and good. The vegan menu isn’t particularly extensive or exciting but for the occasional visit it is perfectly fine. I maybe wouldn’t hurry back myself as a vegan but going as part of a family visit I’d happy order from their vegan menu.

This wasn't our first visit to the Inn and it's not let us down so far. The staff are welcoming, well trained and efficient. You definitely cannot fault the service. However, I am in a powerchair and although getting into the Inn isn't an issue, using the facilities definitely is. Even if the door was rehung so it opened out with a slanted bar on the door, it'd make a huge difference. Getting onto the food; I've only once deviated from my choice of lentil soup and steak pie to try the burger which was great but I couldn't finish it. The portions are generous and if I'm going to be full up, no room for dessert, I'd rather stick to the lentil soup and steak pie. Always amazing. Thanks! We will return.

Came for a family meal on Saturday night. Nice environment and a friendly atmosphere. We sat in a busy part of the restaurant where a large family party was ordering at the same time as us, our meals came out promptly and all were good portions and served hot. The menu is just basic food but made and served fresh. Only criticism would be to update the menus as they are a little worn out.

Loads of parking. Large restaurant. Easy access. Seated quickly, although staff member seemed disinterested and didn't smile once.
Ordered drinks, came fairly quickly.
Ordered 2x macaroni cheese. Not sure what sauce they use or maybe the cheese used to make the sauce, but it had a horrible bitter taste to it, almost like a sick taste. Only ate a few forkfuls. Tomato ketchup couldn't even save it. Came with chips, they were ok, small pot of salad and 1 slice of thin garlic bread.
For almost £15 each it was not worth the money at all.
Nobody visited whilst we were eating to ask if everything was OK with our meal, bar staff whilst paying were also disinterested with no smiling. Gone are the days this was the place to go, we won't be back.

Having been at the birkhill inn several times over the years we know that the food is always pretty good. We decided to visit again today. After our meal i decided to have a dessert which was the chocolate fudge cake and cream. Very much aware desserts have a good mark up on them (i worked in a hotel in the same company for a few years) and that they are mostly provided by brake bros. The price this time was £6.75. However when it arrived i needed a microscope to actually see it. It was tiny. Maybe 2 or 3 mouthfuls. It was almost like the slice had been sliced again and was so thin and small it looked pathetic on the big plate. The waitress said she would speak to the duty manager as she agreed it was tiny too. She came back saying he said it was a standard size and looked mortified for having to tell us. The duty manager didnt even have the manners to come over and tell us himself. At that point i said i would not have it and she took it away. I have had that dessert before and it was never that small. The mark up on it must have been at least 95%. When leaving the premises, we were delighted to see that the duty manager had not disappeared, but was laughing and chatting away to other customers. Pity he didn't actually do his job and speak to the customers who spoke very politely to the waitress about the problem they had had. Meanwhile anyone looking for a dessert at the birkhill inn, go and buy a cake elsewhere - more cake for less money. Or bring a microscope with you.

Lovely food and portion sizes. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Unfortunately the service did not match the food. We were left too long with empty plates in front of us which we eventually had to ask to be removed. We also had to ask for dessert menus and the dessert spoons once desserts had been served. There was also a mix up with our dessert orders . Desserts were really nice though. Instead of a member of staff being in the restaurant area they were all congregated out in the bar area talking, making it difficult to get their attention without having to get up and go to them.

A once loved family venue that has completely gone down the drain. First of all the staff are horrendous, a bunch of completely incompetent children, mannerless with all but a brain-cell between them. I didn’t see a smile on any of their faces but this is likely down to the poor management. Secondly, where to begin with the food, a menu straight out of the 90’s that literally could be from the frozen section of any budget supermarket. They are still riding the coattails of “their famous steak pie” which is bang average at best with the added addition of undercooked/raw pastry. Dessert was inedible. Be warned if you dare question the staff, they have no interest in resolving the issue but by being flat out rude and condescending. Won’t be back.

Recently, dining out has become a rare indulgence, and we approach our lunch choices with care. Based on past experiences, The Birkhill Inn (affectionately known as ‘Birkie’) has been a reliable choice for us.
For starters, I enjoyed the potato skins, while my husband opted for the mozzarella sticks—both dishes were quite good, although the portions were quite generous for an appetizer. I ended up taking half of my potato skin home.
As for the main course, we both ordered the steak pie, which has typically been a favorite. However, this time, the pastry was undercooked. We managed by pushing the raw pastry aside, but the real disappointment was the jellied gravy—it lacked the usual flavor and fell short of our expectations.
I regret not speaking up at the time, but I didn’t want to come across as a complainer in a busy restaurant. Unfortunately, it seems that prices have increased, and the decline in quality and standards is disheartening. We won’t be returning to The Birkhill Inn anytime soon. 😔

No complaints about the food ,however the attitude of the member of staff who served us was appalling. When we asked for a little break between main and dessert we were rudely told we only had a limited time - we were the only people in the restaurant! We decided to leave as we didn’t feel welcome and I told the server why to which he replied “Your attitude stinks”. We were extremely distressed and will not be returning.

The "Famous Birkie Steak Pie" is a myth from the past. The £16.50 steak pie consisted of 4 tiny pieces of meat, gelatinous "gravy" and pastry, a far cry from the hey day of the legendary steak pie. This place used to be bulging at lunch times, we left about 1.30pm and the place was far from busy, the bar/lounge was empty, seems people have voted with their feet. This was not my choice of venue and in future it will be a hard no thanks, a sad situation. The staff were excellent and as I was with other family, I was not able to complain before the bill was paid.
Recommendation would be to drive to the Station Hotel in Carnoustie, beautiful home made steak pie at £13.95, all home made, sadly the usual frozen chips but hey you can't have perfection for that price.
I've been persuaded 3 times to give the Birkie another go, there won't be a 4th.

Went back tried this birkie after about 4 years now I knew why I stayed away so long the famous steak pie is just mush and gravy there’s no chunks of beef under the burnt bit of puff pastry it’s honestly the worst steak pie I’ve ever had I sent it back didn’t get charged for it and no wonder also the chips were cheap dry and burnt definitely not hand cut fresh chips there cheap supermarket chips inedible too. Also my partner had macaroni cheese she had 2-3 forkfulls and sent that back too as was just hard pasta and a sauce no cheese but was charged for hers we will never be back to this place food disgrace and ripping people off with the word famous in there steak pie yes it maybe was 10-15 years ago but definitely not now makes me wonder who the chefs are can’t even cook chips or macaroni cheese. Also the whole Dining experience is like going for a meal in a care home decor never changed the place is run down needs a complete makeover tables and chairs were filthy plates and crockery all damaged and marked must be years and years old so I Will never put my hard earned wages into this care home establishment ever again and wouldn’t eat for free disgusting

This has always been one of our favourite places, we've been going here for years and the food was always fab. Which is why we went here for 'Grans Birthday' lunch.
Unfortunately the food was way below the standard we expected and the service was very slow. It took ages for someone to come and take a drinks order. I actually thought they'd forgotten we were there...
Gran had the mac & cheese which seemed to be pasta with a bit of grated cheese on the top and no cheese underneath. it was tasteless and bland and she left most of it. Others at the table had a taste and agreed. Bland.
I had the lasagne and struggled to see where the actual lasagne was.. it came smothered in a 'soup' (the only way I can describe it (photo attached) and it was very salty. I asked for no chips so my 'side' was 1 piece of garlic bread and a tiny wee bowl of 'salad' (which was green leaves, purple coleslaw and 1/6th of a tomato), I had the tomato with my salty and not very good lasagne, I left most of it. Very disappointing. I can see us avoiding this place from now on.. which is a shame as it used to be really good.

Servers were great, food was amazing. However, the bar supervisor when we came to pay was extremely hostile, one of my family members had an extra drink on the bill which we didn’t have and when we asked for it to be taken off, the bar supervisor claimed he had ordered a double of this drink, which he hadn’t, and had said my family member had watched him make it, which is impossible since he went to the toilet. He argued with us, including a 16 year old girl…threatening to show us CCTV which he didn’t. Spent £170, as i said servers were amazing and the food was incredible but this left a bad taste in my mouth.

Late lunch/early tea with a large family group. Took a long time for someone to take our order in the first place, and they weren’t particularly busy. Food arrived after a small wait. Everyone’s food was lovely, although the steak pie wasn’t as good as I remembered. I also got the cookies n cream cheesecake which wasn’t the best, tasted like a mass produced supermarket version, although the ice cream was lovely and everyone else’s desserts went down well. I had to go ask the serving staff for 3 extra spoons as these didn’t come out with the desserts, and I also had to ask for the two kids desserts which had been forgotten about. All in all a nice occasion but we would probably find somewhere else in future as the service and food weren’t quite as good as we remembered.
