I visited that pub twice while I was in Edinburgh for holidays as I was very satisfied given everything. There are many food options, everything we ate was yummy and the portions were big (sweet potatoes, goats salad, regular chips, nachos, garlic ciabata, buffalo wings), the IPA and the Lager beers were really good, very nice atmosphere and decoration, there was no smell from food in the pub, the staff was friendly and really quick and finally the prices were very reasonable. Oh! And they had live music at 21:30. You will not find anything "gourmet" or unique to eat but what they have is really good. I totally recommend it!

Stopped in for lunch while in the area and not long after, the place quickly filled up. It was not hard to see why, as our food seemed fresh and from scratch (I had soup), and the service was attentive but not intrusive. They were very busy but still took time for questions and definitely took care of us.

Been visiting some family in the city over the Christmas/ New Years period and found this pub on our first day in the city luckily!!! Loved it so much that we came back multiple times and found the staff recognising and even welcoming us when we went in! Food was delicious (highly recommend their haggis stuffed chicken) and good selection of beers. We wanted to commend the staff for being so friendly and always smiling especially during the festive season and the volume of customers they were seeing. They never failed to check if we were low on beers and even though at times flustered, made us feel welcome! Thanks George IV!!

Stopped in here for a quick bite to eat after a morning spent at the National Museum. Really enjoyed the Mac & Cheese and they had a good beer selection . Please wasn't too crowded on a Sunday afternoon - service was quick - food & beer were very good

This place was nice, even though it's not the best one if you want to avoid tourism, because the food is pub quality, which is nice but too much expansive. We've had a great time, even if I would love more bread but, because the waiters looked bored and even pissed by our presence, I've appreciated food. I've paid quite much for a simple salad, which was very tasty but it should be less expansive. I'm sure natives love this place for a good party during the week end and I can understand, it's well decorated and the food is really good. Just about the price, you're a pub, not a highly rated restaurant, even if your food is tasty. Loved it. Romain.

Situated in a very picturesque spot on the George IV bridge in Edinburgh, the bar has the look of a quaint, traditional but up-market bar / restaurant. Lots of local Scottish beers, good whisky selection and standard bar food... Sadly the food didn’t quite live up to the promised (or assumed) expectations; the Scotch Egg looked nice but the yoke was hard, and it came with some dull salad leaves devoid of dressing...not bad, just a little underwhelming and could’ve been so much better very easily. The chicken burger was good but suffered the same poor salad accompaniment. Staff were friendly and the seating area was warm and cosy. Overall it didn’t feel too touristy despite the location, but the lack of attention to detail suggests tourists are the main customers so they don’t have to strive to bring the locals back in

Been in Edinburgh many times before but this was my first visit to the George 1V. Nice pleasant staff and a great atmosphere. I ordered the Fish & Chips with bread & butter, priced at £14.95 and I was certainly not disappointed, either with the quality or the quantity. The fish was beautifully cooked with a fine texture. This pub is highly recommendable & I will definitely return the next time I am in the city. Stephen Davis, Hull.

We went for a meal and some drinks on Monday 10th Oct. Lovely wee place inside, good atmosphere. We waited about 7 mins then i went and got the girls attention and asked if we could order food. The girl came and took our order. We enjoyed the food and had another drink then went to the bar and find someone to pay the bill too. The bill was over 52.00. We got the receipt and left the pub, on returning to our hotel i looked through the bill and noticed there was a 4.80 service charge added. We had no idea about this charge. I had emailed asking for an explanation but no response so feel i have to let people know they are adding this charge without your knowledge.

Before our first drink even reached our table, we were confronted by a member of staff who had supposedly OVERHEARD our conversation, and asked us if we were talking derogatory about the waitress who took our order. (She had to ask us for clarification about what she THOUGHT she heard, that in itself is rude and unprofessional) Despite this not being the case at all, and even after reiterating our conversation to her (which was about the topic of Track and Trace) this particular member of staff continued with this accusation, and we were told that we could have one drink, and then we would have to leave. (I honestly cannot fathom what she thought she had overheard, and it was never established to us either!!) The whole circumstance was absolutely bewildering! Obviously we left before having our 1 drink, as we are aren't going to stay somewhere we aren't welcome. Never been anywhere and felt so insulted and humiliated!

We randomly picked this place for food on our last of four nights in Edinburgh. So glad we did. We easily got a nice seat by the window. Staff were lovely and friendly. Menu had a good selection. I went for a burger and finally got to try a deep-fired Mars Bar, which I was pleasantly surprised with. The burger was very good. My partner went with Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties, and cranachan. The latter was simply delicious!!! Overall, we had a lovely last evening in hear and I would highly recommend it for food. But it was after our return home that the true nature of the staff became apparent. I had bought a pair of silver earrings that day in Edinburgh but discovered when I got home that I had lost them. I chanced e-mailing a few places we had been on our final day. To the credit of those lovely Edinburgh people, everyone replied! And to my amazement, the staff in the George IV bar had not only found the earrings, but had honestly put them into their 'lost and found'. Fiona (sorry, I don't known your surname), who I think is the manager, very kindly responded to me and sent the earrings back to me in Ireland. Again, thank you so very much Fiona.... The food and staff experience in general would ensure that I would definitely return to the George IV next time I am in Edinburgh. But the staff really are of a different caliber. Edinburgh is wonderful because of people like this......

Stumbled over this little establishment while on a short break in Edinburgh. The staff were outstanding and the food was delicious. Great atmosphere and we could have sat and people watched all afternoon. To top is all they were dog friendly. The wife had a deep-fried mars bar which she ensures me was delicious but I was more than full from the beef and beer pie. Really good pub grub served with the warmest of Scottish welcomes.

We stopped in for lunch and were immediately told by the wait staff that our food orders might be delayed because one kitchen was servicing 2 restaurants. We were fine and proceeded w/ our drinks and food orders. Actually, to our delight, our food came pretty quickly and we enjoyed our selections; the food was delicious and the service was excellent.

We nipped in here as another couple of places close by we're too busy. There was space here, and it soon became clear why. The girl that took our order was surly and disinterested, any my initial thought was perhaps that was just her. The food came and it was truly awful. We had "Beef and Beer Pie". The meat was extremely tough in both, and the veg was very poor - given its odd shape I'm going to say it was frozen veg and not fresh. Kids had burgers, they were average but the fries inedible due to the amount of salt put on them by the kitchen. There was no follow up to ask if th food was ok. The waitress cleared the 80% full plates and never even asked if the food was ok. I offered her the feedback above and she said " thanks". That's literally the response I got. We left angry, hungry and at £75, absolutely robbed.

Arrived in sparsely populated pub and ordered beer, soup and smoked salmon starters. Beer served promptly. Bar filled quickly thereafter. Orders were taken from later arrivals and delivered to 3 adjacent tables while I waited. And waited. A waitress asked if I had ordered at 1.20 and did not return to advise of progress. My original server had been occupied with furniture deliveries following my original order. He may have been distracted. About 10 minutes later I asked about progress and the original server went to find out and returned immediately with my order. No apologies or explanation offered for the significant delay (around half an hour) apart from "we're very busy". Aske for something off my bill, given that the two adjacent tables had received their orders before me, despite arriving some time following my order. The manager would have to deal with that. No sooner had I started my soup the manager introduced himself and once I explained my complaint and that the order seemed to have been lost it was clear he would neither listen nor understand my complaint. I explained that and then swore that I was done with the discussion, asked for my bill and would get on with my lunch. (I was hungry!) But he was angry. Returned with my bill, told me to "F off from my pub" and threw it at me. Clearly he hadn't been on the hospitality conciliation course. Regrettable. The soup WAS one of the best bowls of Cullen skink I have tasted.

Tonight we walked in as a group of friends for drinks and some food during our weekend away in Edinburgh. Unfortunately the service fell short of expectations. We ordered a round of drinks and asked about allergens of the food menu. We were given an allergens menu and ordered some drinks and that was the last we saw of the waitress who seemed disinterested in our presence in the bar. Nobody came back to ask if we wanted to order food or had any questions about the menu. There were five staff members standing together and talking at the bar and not one came over to us to ask about ordering food. Most of our group have worked in hospitality/retail and understand the pressures of the service industry but judging by the amount of staff on duty and the time spent talking at the bar, the business of the bar was not the priority. We decided to pay for our drinks and eat elsewhere. Even paying for our drinks was a hassle and if we hadn’t gone to the bar I don’t know if anyone would have come and asked us to pay or noticed if we hadn’t (not that we would ever do that). It’s a lovely bar inside in a great location but on this occasion the service was poor and therefore unfortunately, this resulted in us not having food or more drinks.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
