Excellent value vegetable curry for just £5. I have not given 5 stars because the Ice cream portion was very very small for £2.70, 2 tiny portions half the size of a Macdonald's ice cream tub amount at under a pound.
The curry was fantastic value. So for the curry definitely go you won't find cheaper, I should of mentioned about the Ice Cream.

Will be absolutely gutted if this place ever closes! Have been going for years and it's always the same. Excellent cheap curry, no fuss. This is not a 'restaurant' so don't complain if you want white tablecloths and waiters! It's a canteen style - you queue up to get your plate of food and eat at communal tables.

As iconic an Edinburgh landmark as the Scott Monument and as familiar and comforting as an old leather armchair, I've frequented the Mosque Kitchen for about ten years, and it's stayed resolutely and satisfyingly the same through all that time.
What you're not getting is fine dining, a wine list, or even much in the way of service. What you are getting is authentic and delicious canteen-style curry cooked with the confidence and assurance of a team of cooks who have turned out the same dishes, day after day, for years on end.
I can only assume that most of the negative reviews around this one were mis-sold on the concept, but if you're after simple, delicious, dependable, reasonably-priced food in the middle of Edinurgh, you can't go wrong with this legendary restaurant.

I went to Edinburgh with a family of 12. Saw the reviews and thought I’ll try this place. Let me tell you one thing don’t be fooled by the 4* reviews. It’s absolutely horrific. I left my table full off food. The service was absolutely horrendous. When I told the member of staff the food doesn’t look appetising she responded ‘ no refunds or exchange, first try it’ who even says such thing to their customer. Half of the menu was not available they had limited food and the food was soooo cold, that we asked them politely whether they can re-heat it, the staff member was unhappy we asked them for warm food. Don’t visit this place, if you do you will only expect cold disgusting food.

As I visited Edinburgh for the first time, mosque kitchen was the first restaurant I encountered. However, I was utterly disappointed. Firstly, the atmosphere of the restaurant was off putting and not eye catching. Along with this, the staff were absolutely rude and unprofessional, making us not feel welcomed at all. Food-wise, the meals were terrible; half the menu wasn’t available leaving us with very limited options which were disgusting. Everything was stone cold and left me with an upset stomach. I felt like a vampire when eating the lamb curry as it tasted like blood. Although, one thing I will not forget is when I politely asked the waiter for water, she said “ask her” (pointing at her co worker) and strutted off. Needless to say I was horrified by this experience and will never visit again. I advise to not eat here if you want to get your moneys worth.

I really wanted to like this food i really did however I was seriously let down. The food feels like they were really going for quantity than quality.
The concept was you choose the food and they pile it on your plate.
The food was very bland and needing salt and felt that it was under the heating lamp for too long. For what it was it’s was expensive and a plate of food like that should not cost more than £5.f or four of us it came to almost £40
I chose a chicken biryani with some daal. The biryani was lukewarm and it felt I was eating not because I enjoyed it but because I paid for it and had no choice but to eat it.
The thing that was more horrible than the food was the state of the bathroom. It’s like none of them wanted to clean it. The toilet was disgusting, the floor wet and the sink was full of soggy toilet paper and vomit.
The quality of the food and bathroom really did shock me.

I had two hours between trains at Edinburgh Waverley, so popped in for a late lunch, as I remembered the place as serving delicious curry for a very reasonable price from my Edinburgh-dwelling days. Unfortunately the standards have slipped. I paid £9.20 for a chicken and chickpea curry, a small naan bread and a can of pepsi. That’s a huge increase from what I remembered, but I haven’t been in since 2019 so I was willing to look past that.
The two curries were nothing short or disgusting. They were watery and very under seasoned (well-balanced seasoning was one of the reasons I liked eating at the kitchen in the past). The rice was really watery too and the entire dish was, at best, lukewarm. The naan bread was substantially smaller than what it used to be a few years ago, as was the curry portion.
I will, unfortunately, never visit again, which is sad, as the Mosque Kitchen used to be one of my favourite places for a quick lunch.
I should’ve trusted the negative reviews below.

Sure, this place isn't super fancy, but the chicken curry is as good as ever. First came here 10 years ago, and one of the reasons I wanted to visit Edinburgh again.
If you're expecting a 3-star resaurant experience, you're going to be disappointed. However, if you like a more local simple fastfood type of deal you're at the right place.

Nice family atmosphere. Great customer service. Reasonable prices.
Bit of a confusion as the original‘Mosque Kitchen’ is not the one on St Nicholas Square. It’s about 50 yards further down. You’ll see the sign on the car park entrance. The original one is the part of the mosque.
We went to the one on main road on the first day (not the original one). Their food was not good taste and bit pricey as well.

Had lunch here after reading some reviews. The veg curry was tasty, filling and cheap. The surroundings are basic which is ok for the price. One server seemed to glower at me the whole time and overall service wasn't overly friendly. Luckily I didn't go to the WC until after I'd eaten and to say it was horrendous is putting it mildly. Later I did check out the food hygiene rating as assessed by Edinburgh Council, you can make up your own mind.

When you want an authentic tasting meal and you eat with your mouth, not your eyes, this is great. Don't go here expecting silver service, amazing presentation, gourmet dishes, tablecloths, attentive waiter service or alcohol. Do go here if you want a great plate of currys, rice and bread. 2 plates of meat curry, 2 vegetable dishes each and a naan to share was £20. And the all-important taste - Brilliant. What more do you need?

Good range of veggie dishes. We went for the falafel wrap meal (comes with drink and chips). It was a little dry, but there is a large bowl of yogurt dressing available, so we applied that liberally and enjoyed our meal. Seating is mainly along long tables. Very good value for a filling tasty meal.

This was recommended to me by a friend to see if it was comparable to similar style kitchens in Singapore.
Yes, even to the types of tables and chairs.
Delicious halal food which you go up to the counter and pick your mix (usually a rice or bread then a meat curry and two veg's). Friendly staff who welcomely explain each dish if you are unsure.
It was busy when I was there (about 5.30pm) and there were plenty of families enjoying the spread.
The Mosque Kitchen beats hands down the more run of the mill cookie cutter restaurants that easily attracts less culinary savy visitors

We first learned about this place when a presenter from the University of Edinburgh was asked about his favorite local eateries. It has since become our favorite quick, no-frills place for tasty curries. You basically point to what you want and a server fills your plate before you pay and find an open table. I especially liked what I had today: cauliflower & potatoes and lentils served with rice. It was pretty busy today with Fringe happening but it was a very satisfying meal to have on a rainy day.

Haven't been here for ages and tbh not a place I go to for decor or atmosphere. But the food...
Thumping great chunks of lamb or chicken in the curries, the sag aloo is lovely and the naan bread, straight of the stove, is great. You leave well full for £10. No frills, good, cheap plentiful food and bang in the middle of the tourist trap that is the Old Town.

Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
