A favourite of ours. It has been fairly recently refurbished and is sparkling in its new decor. As ever the staff are friendly and prompt in their attention and service. Our standard is the fish and chips with a pot of tea. As the fish is always freshly cooked it's best to delay your pot of tea until it arrives or you'll have finished that before your meal arrives. You don't have to just have the fish there are many other things on offer to suit all. Even in these CV times it was quite busy but there was plenty of space downstairs and upstairs.
A quality eaterie and always worth a visit.

Had a Sunday Dinner at this fabulous restaurant. The food was suberb in the upstairs restaurant in a nice diner themed restaurant. Serving chip shop mains and pizzas with fantastic ice cream based deserts. We booked a table which I would recommend. The service was very good and the value for money I feel was outstanding for a city centre restaurant.
Highly recommended.

Midweek visit but restaurant really busy. Very friendly attentive staff. Good selection of food and drink to suit all tastes. Orders taken quickly and food (both starters & mains) delivered very efficiently and piping hot. Very good portion sizes to satisfy hearty appetites.
Good family friendly restaurant, well worth a visit.

Restaurant looks very clean and inviting from outside. It is indeed very clean inside and table service appeared to be very pleasant from the moment of entering this place until we had paid for our dinner. Prices are very much similar with other places in the central Edinburgh and there is quite a lot to choose from the menu.
During my visit all food was very fresh and nicely served within very respectable time frame. Fish and chips is not something I would be looking forward to repeat once again soon. Fish itself was fresh but batter burned too much and dry. This is type of food that tastes better with tartare sauce and being offered a small pot of this sauce to share between 4 people was rather a joke.
There are many other places, which serve far better fish and chips at similar price.

The food was fine here but the service was lazy and rude. Though it wasn't at all busy and there were two waitresses working in the upstairs section, they were chatting and standing around, and neither paid any attention to whether we needed anything. After bringing us drinks, they ignored us - no interest in whether we wanted food menus (which we did, obviously, it's a restaurant). Then they ignored us again, and I had to ask for dessert menus, and ask again for the bill. The response each time was surprised and sluggish. It was quite weird. Your customers shouldn't be having to strain to attract the attention someone who's idling about sullenly on the other side of the room. I don't want to be fussed over constantly by any means, but it's standard to offer customers menus, and to anticipate what they might need next!!

After a self isolation of 14days in glasgow. Found a fab chippy. Fish supper( 2 peices of fish and larger portion of chips £6.90
This chippy had the cheek to sell me a fish supper, with only 1 peice of fish. £8.50. Smaller meal.!!

First time visit. Very clean restaurant, spacious not cramped. Very clean, good service and very friendly helpful staff.
But more importantly the food is absolutely fantastic, We had tempura prawns for starters, you can always tell a good restaurant by the quality of their batter and if it’s nicely coloured without an over cooked smell. I had haddock and chips as a main and when it arrived the portion was massive, I struggled to finish it. The chips were crispy, dry and nicely cooked. The fish had a lovely batter and fresh and moist.
My wife ordered pizza and when it arrived it was massive, it could have served both of us. Again it was cooked perfectly with plenty of toppings to the point she could only eat half of it.
We both had a large glass of wine with our meal and when we got the bill we were more than surprised bearing in mind restraunts in Edinburgh can be expensive but this was more than reasonable.
We asked if they could box what we’d left as we always find there’s a large homeless community on the streets and I personally think it does no harm to give someone a meal.
Next time we’re back in Edinburgh we’ll eat here.
Lord and Lady Evans.

A great experience. After a couple of minutes waiting for a table (usually a good sign) we were sat in a great window booth on the upper floor, perfect for the missus to people watch on a busy night! The ice cream milkshakes were really good. I went for the minced pie supper with chips and gravy and it ended up being the best pie I have ever tasted. The chips were fantastic too. A friend had recommended the deep fried Mars bar for desert…now I understand why! Pairing it with vanilla ice cream seems like a weird combination but it works really well. Considering the quality of the food, the price was cheaper than I expected. Any time we visit Edinburgh again, we’ll be back for sure.

It’s nice to see the City Restaurant running normal again. I visit it at least once a week, I’m never disappointed when I visit it. The staff are so friendly and patient, nothing is any bother. The service is good, they give you time to choose the meal you want. Then in no time at all the freshly prepared meal arrives at the table. Theirs soups are home made and there’s a minimum of two soups on the menu every day, as a lover of home made soup I’ve tasted most of theirs, all are delicious and you get a large portion for your money. I often go to the City Restaurant with ex colleagues and family and I’ve never heard anyone complain about a meal they’ve had, it’s always how much they’ve enjoyed their meals. I’ll continue to go to the City Restaurant every opportunity I can, keep up the good work!

This restaurant has recently been refurbished and looks like some of the prices have been cut.
This place is a must for anyone looking for an all day breakfast. A friend and I went the other weekend for an all day breakfast and then had some chips and cheese afterwards.
Completely recommend this restaurant although I had to chase up some of my order on the visit, but quality of the food made up for it.

Literally the worst service I’ve ever witnessed, being actively ignored while the two girls had a conversation together (this was on the top level of the restaurant ) and then were given below average food. Cold pancakes that were clearly shop bought and bad quality, Nutella which had bits in it and sweet potato fries which tasted very odd and were room temperature on arrival. Waste of money, especially as the prices are quite high!

Struggled to find anywhere near the city centre which did takeaway fish and chips so asked a local shopkeeper who recommended the City. It is a bit off the beaten track, though not so far from the Royal Mile.
I can only speak for the haggis and chips as that’s all we had. As we’re from England it’s difficult, in fact almost impossible, to find chippies which offer haggis. So, whenever we’re in Scotland or the borders we always have this. Sometimes it can can be a bit variable but the haggis at the City was excellent, probably the best I have ever eaten. It was very flavoursome and not too peppery and with just the right amount of batter. The portion was large and ‘domed’, far better than the ‘sausage’ shapes or slices from a haggis roll you often get. The chips were also excellent, crisp and properly cooked unlike some of the pale flaccid things sometimes on offer!
We originally intended to just grab one portion, to take away, on our way to the station and ordered this. However while it was still being cooked I thought it might be best to ‘eat in’ as the weather was not so good. My wife didn’t really want anything, and certainly not a whole meal, as it was quite early in the day, but the staff were friendly and accommodating, sat us down and brought an extra plate and cutlery for my wife to try a bit even though they hadn’t been asked.
Can’t really pass comment on any of the other food other than the haggis supper as this was all we had however next time we’re in Edinburgh we’ll certainly be visiting the City again!

I had seen that the vegan option I preferred came with mayonnaise inside. Now, I should have assumed it was vegan mayonnaise but, having had embarrassing experiences in the past, I decided to ask. Needless to say, the girl asked me "oh, is mayonnaise not vegan?" I said no and asked whether they have a vegan mayonnaise, to which she answered no.
I asked how can that meal be vegan and she said " I dont know, maybe we will take off the mayonnaise if you want". So that's what I did. The lady who was serving me seemed to be kind of bothered that I was vegan and if felt as if she was not sure what that was. Anyhow, She left and came back with my vegan meal.
Guess what.......... the mayonnaise was there. Do not promote you have vegan meal to attract customers and then not have the basic knowledge when you get one. Is 2021 and you need to wake up a little.
Do go elsewhere if you are actually vegan, seems like the staff does not really have a clue.

Went to the City Restaurant last night with ex colleagues the first time we’ve met up since December 2020.
We’ve missed our usual 3 monthly visit. I’m glad to say that the standards haven’t dropped since our last visit, the food as always was first class, the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. Once we’d placed our order for food and drinks, drinks arrived and not much later the food which was all freshly prepared, everything was lovely and hot and very appetising to look at. We all agreed we got value for money. I look forward to our next meet at the City Restaurant and my weekly visit to the City Restaurant.

Lovely food, generous portions, great service and fabulous value for money.
Starters of bread and olives & haggis bon bons got things off to a great start - although with the portion size being so generous we did begin to wonder if we had ordered too much!
The main of Scotsman (haggis) pizza was declared as 'the best pizza ever' while the homemade chips which accompanied the delicious onion burger were very fine indeed.
Just about enough space left to share a deep fried Mars bar....(when in Scotland!) which came with some ice cream.
Our daughter chose the chicken burger and chips from the kids set menu and ate the lot - a rare occurrence if ever there was one! A chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and cream disappeared in similar style.
Despite the restaurant being very full the service was excellent - extra sauce, tap water, a box to take away a couple of slices of the pizza (we had to leave a tiny bit of space for the Mars bar 🤣)....all done quickly and with a smile.
An outstanding experience, will definitely be returning next time we're in Edinburgh.
If only they delivered to Newcastle......

Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
