We have been to The Dogs about 5 or 6 times and each time it gets better. We are frequent visitors there as two of our children attended University in Edinburgh and one is now working in the city. This has been our favourite restaurant out of many fantastic places and can't wait to return in February. The food is uniquely... More

Very nice ambience (even if the tables are a bit too close to each other) and nice, understated decor. The menu is interesting, with 'something for everyone'. The food is nice, even good in parts. The prices are reasonable. That's the good bits covered, and yes, they do add up to the bulk of what I tend to look for... More

I went to the Dogs on Thursday 12th January 2017. The entrance is a little door on Hanover Street which leads you up some winding stairs to the cosy restaurant with dark wood furniture. The atmosphere is dimly lit and very warm. I chose the Ling, prawn and spinach pie which was very nicely flavoured and pure comfort. My dessert... More

This restaurant is quirky and cool and serves food with weird combinations. Yet it works well together and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. We went late on a Sunday evening and both ordered a three course meal. The broccoli and Stilton cheese soup was lovely, as was the oxtail and vegetable stew, the pork chop was also nice but... More

First visit for lunch at The Dogs yesterday after a recommendation. Service was excellent and efficient and our food was absolutely delicious. If you're looking for real Scottish food with flavour then I would highly recommend. Will definitely be back. Lunch prices were very reasonable, and the portion sizes perfect!

Without doubt one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Between us we had the soup, scotch broth, fish and chips and oxtail stew and all were excellent quality and portion sizes spot on!The restaurant was busy but the food arrived really quickly, the ambience and staff were good - demonstrating great patience with some fellow... The Dogs is a longstanding Edinburgh restaurant, slightly rough at the edges but still stylish, busy and extremely well run. The food is hearty and always tasty with good ingredients and very well priced. The wine list takes in all prices up to and including some superb Californians which offer great value for the quality. Our only moan would be... More

Food good, place funky but with the indifferent staff bordering on down right rude I would recommend you take yourself to a better and more friendly place. (Was not looking for a new best friend but being a little civil would have went along way)

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
