The staff was not welcoming at all. We were not treated politely from the start and the food wasn't good at all. It wasn't fresh, it wasn't tasty and it was incredibly salty. The waiter was quite rude, and made us feel very uncomfortable with his attitude as if we were bothering him because we asked a question or didn't... More

As menus go this one isn't huge. However, it's full of great ingredients well balanced and reasonably priced. It is good to see an imaginative menu - making it well worth the climb upstairs. The restaurant isn't huge either and the furniture is pretty average but who could miss the huge dog picture behind the bar! We found the staff... More

A quirky restaurant with the tables all lined up like at school. Our waiter (the owner?) never welcomed us or made any attempt to smile or engage with us. He mainly just scowled at us. Maybe he was feeling unwell...? My food was very poor. I had the mussels to start with and then the fish and chips. A safe... More

I went to The Dogs today with 2 friends, because it always tempted 2 of us, so decided to give it a go. The minute we went in, the smell hit us ... that smell of fried food that will stay in your hair and clothes ... The waiters (two at least) were quite rude, I'm surprised they are serving... More

We came here on the recommendations from two separate friends. Food was well prepared and somewhat imaginative (celeriac and pear purée). Our waiter, Dave, seemed funny at first when he evaded our questions about ingredients and preparation with answers like "amazing; you will love it!" Later however when we asked about desserts (what fruit is in tonight's "fruit crumble?" And... More

We went to "The Dogs" my girlfriend and I because it was recommended in a few websites. First impression: What a disappointment! Not very welcoming manager, pretty rude despite the warm atmosphere in the restaurant. Nevertheless, the waitress was really kind and helpful when it came to choose our dishes. Sadly, quality of food wasn't there, with inedible chips (how... More

Went to The Dogs for dinner on a recommendation from my friend and was not disappointed. A lonely selection of food, not a huge menu but enough. I went for the fish and chips, which was gorgeous. My friend had pan fried hake - probably looked better than my dish! Enjoyed a lovely cocktail with my dinner. There is a... More

Where have you been over the past four days in Edinburgh? What a fabulous, quirky restaurant with simply amazing food. In fact the food is the best I have eaten in the entire UK for a long time. And it's crazy cheap! Seriously considering a strenuous walk around the block to allow for another meal!! Do not miss this place!

We googled places to eat before we came to Edinburgh and this place appeared in the top 10 (not a trip advisor website) Personally we thought it was quirky & different .. We eat at all sorts of restaurants, yes the decor can leave a little to be desired for however we really liked it, we chose the bread for... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
