Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful gastropub right on the Royal Mile . We went there twice, once for lunch and once for dinner . Had to wait fair amount of time for table , but that’s because they are good. If looking for charming old world pub with great...menu then stop here . The staff hustles, and just great meal experience. Thanks for helping to make our trip memorable.More

Waited an eternity to get a table for traditional Scottish food. Then we waited a second eternity for our food. Although the food was tasty, wasting over 2 hours of my life to get a table, food and a bill was ridiculous :(

We were very lucky to beat the dinner rush here. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table to be available but we managed to find a corner of the bar downstairs to wait at even though the place was packed. The drinks...were great and when we made it upstairs for dinner it ended up being the best meal we had the entire trip. Every other dinner was compared to Deacon Brodie’s from that point on and nothing else came close. The steak and ale pie was mouthwatering and I wish I could go back and have it again right now. And the sticky toffee pudding…nothing will ever compare to it. I’d never had it before and no other restaurant in Scotland that we went to was able to match the one I had here. And I tried a lot of different sticky toffee puddings. The espresso martini was also the best one I have ever tasted. If you are in Edinburgh, you can’t miss dinner and drinks here. When we left there was a line of people down the stairs and out the door waiting for tables. It’s busy for good reason.More

We visited for dinner, but we were told they had too many reservations prior to end of service so they could not sit us. We went to the bar for a pint, and we were basically ignored, the server could not be bothered with us....Their musician came it to set up and took over our table. We did not feel welcomed at all and will not return.More

Visited in the evening for dinner to find the place was very busy. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table. The restaurant is upstairs and there is a bar on the ground floor. As it was very busy there was a bit of a...wait between being shown to a table, ordering drinks and food and then for the food to arrive. However this didn't spoil our visit we were happy to wait and not rush. We ordered the chicken pie, mash and veg along with a very decent pint of 80 shillings ale (local beer) and raspberry gin and tonic. The food was standard good quality pub food you would expect from a place like this. Good choice of beers and the barman who was happy to give a small sample of each ale to see which I preferred. Definitely recommend the 80 shillings. The staff were very polite and friendly, a little slow but it was packed so understandable, they were working very hard but still smiled and engaged with the customers. Every time we walked past the pub it was always busy. Good location on the Royal Mile.More

Nice old pub. Good beer and decent food. Great atmosphere. I need to say more they say so I love the history of the place. He was not a nice man and was hung with a device HE invented. Was the inspiration for the book...Dr. Jeckel and Mr. HydeMore

After a marvelous visit to the Scottish National Gallery, my wife picked this place for lunch. I am so glad she did. The pub downstairs was slammed. We made it thru the crowd and upstairs for about a 25 minute wait. The best part about...the wait is I got my wife and I pints to enjoy as we waited. We had the good fortune to get Ian as our server. Very pleasant young man with such a lovely accent. For a starter we ordered the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. OMG. Had I known how good this was I would have gotten the meal size portion for my lunch. For lunch I got the Garlic Chicken Schnitzel. My wife got the Balmoral chicken. Hers was divine. Mine was hot and tasted fine. It just wasn't what I expected. This is not a negative. It just wasn't for me. My choice. While we waited for our food, Ian told us the story of how Deacon Brodie was inspiration for Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The tavern has so many decorations all over the walls that you should spend time looking at. Thanks Ian.More

Called in for lunch after stumbling upon this great pub whilst exploring the city. It was very busy but we were fortunate enough to be quickly seated. We both ordered stovies and it was really good. Served with carrots and lightly toasted bread. The staff...were friendly and efficient and we definitely would return.More

The food was great, and the atmosphere upstairs was restful after a tiring day of touring the castle. We stopped to find a 45 minute wait, but had a beer down at the bar while we waited. My friend had a vegetarian lentil pie that...she said was delicious, and I ordered the haggis, neeps, and tatties appetizers. They were very good, even though they were extremely busy.More

We came here as headed out of the castle then looked at trip advisor and just so happened this place had great reviews. Waited like 30 mins for a table which was fine so we chose what we wanted to eat. Got seated to be...told half the starters weren’t available and a lot of the pies. The food we chose wasn’t great, the chips were cold and dry, everything else generally bland, the staff didn’t ask us so we didn’t say anything. Definitely wouldn’t return to this place for food. Drinks yes, food no.More
