About
For great food and wine and an old-fashioned good time, you can't go wrong with this delightful and traditional restaurant in Albany Street, Edinburgh. As you enter the dark, seductive dining room – filled with candles and tall palms – it will be a case of love at first sight and we guarantee you'll want to curl up in a corner and stay forever. The cosmopolitan crowd love the cosy, comfortable vibe, and we love the walls decorated with whisky-inspired poetry from a local writer. Signature dishes at The Magnum Restaurant include the rib-eye steak served with pink fir fries; the venison burger with chips cooked in delicious, salty beef dripping; and the tempura Peterhead haddock with lemon tartare and a green pea puree.

Recommend it if you are looking for a nice place off the main tourist track in Edinburgh and this was right place for food, environment and service. The wait staff was great in terms of making us feel at home and helping with choices from the menu. The food was great and not too pricey compared to other places we ate at while in town.
The environment was casual and cozy - comfortable. Do not go there for the bathrooms, but I never go to a place just because of the loo. Recommend and will go back.

We booked this based on the reviews and it was near our hotel. We enjoyed a three course set meal, very reasonably priced at £35. The Venison was particularly delicious as was the smoked trout and crab starter. The pudding with chilli, ginger and rum served with coconut sorbet finished the meal off beautifully. The staff were working hard with a busy service but were helpful and friendly. Very good value for money and a great start to an enjoyable evening in lovely Edinburgh.

We came one evening for dinner and the service was extremely slow and non-proactive which did hamper our experience. Food took a while to arrive, drinks were empty for ages (we had to call someone after a while as it went unnoticed) and then we missed out on dessert because the rest of the service took so long. The food was good and based on other reviews it sounds like service is usually great so I can only assume it was a one off.

I tried 39 different restaurants before being able to book a table at the Magnum (others wouldn't take under 18s, or tables more than 4, or were fully booked)! However I'm very glad we did go here and next time we're going out for dinner in Edinburgh this will be my first choice. We felt very welcome and the service was excellent throughout. It was my mum's birthday and although the surroundings were casual, the food was special to fit the occasion. Mum loved her sea bass and the sticky toffee pudding was delicious. I see the menu changes regularly so we'll definitely be back to try what's on offer next time.

5/5 as the staff couldn’t do enough, looked after everything we wanted down to the finest detail.
Myself along with two girlfriends arrived and ordered two goldfish bowls of G&T in lovely cold glasses with ice and cucumber. Perfect.
Two Caesar salads perfectly seasoned with those delicious little brown anchovies and smoked chicken. Missing enough sauce was rectified after asking for more and one of us went for the scallops. Plump perfect shaped fresh white flesh atop black pudding, they were superb.
A bottle of Chardonnay for the ladies with two tasting glasses arriving first followed by the bottle. I opted for the Argentinian Malbec which had come to the table cold out of the cellar. The waiter arranged for the chill to be taken off it and at my request he decanted it and arrived back after about twenty minutes with Perfect room temp wine.
Roasted pork belly with fondant potato and a stunning jus
Sea bass with a medley of vegetables perfectly prepared
My Ribeye steak MR was melt in the mouth delicious alongside garlic truffle fries, stunning.
Cheeseboard for two was enjoyed by the ladies while my homemade ice cream my favourite palate cleanser finished a great evening of great chef work and all this when the kitchens are hard pressed to find great chefs capable of producing high end dining.
A Janneau cognac finished the evening to my expectations
Not a single complaint.
Very attentive but casual experienced staff made for top points.
I’m not easy to satisfy, as a restauranteur and ex chef.

We have just been on the third evening of a three night break in Edinburgh and have had two meals at the Magnum, it was that good the first time! The quality of the food by the extremely talented Peter, the chef, is absolutely fantastic. I am quite a fussy eater and the Magnum, were quite happy to change about 3 things from the original dish so it was absolutely perfect for me and it was one of the nicest meals i have ever had! I definitely recommend the pork medallions to anybody!
The service as well is of the highest standard, with the guys being attentive throughout and really pleasant company.
We would happily recommend the Magnum to anybody!

I went here with friends as the restaurant we had booked had to close because of COVID restrictions & they recommended the Magnum. As this was our first get together for almost eighteen months we were all very disappointed that our plans had to be altered but our disappointment changed very quickly when we saw the menu & tasted the food. We all thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food & found the staff very attentive & helpful. I would thoroughly recommend the Magnum & look forward to returning on my next visit to Edinburgh.

Booked restaurant, paid deposit as requested, as restaurant was busy due to the Rugby and group of six arrived on time, to a busy restaurant. Had to wait 5 minutes for table, but worth the wait. Between the group, we had Cullen Skink, Scallops and Salmon to start, Aubergine, Venison and Rib Eye for mains. All wonderful dishes, could not fault anything we were served.
As we had a short wait for the table, the owner tried out a couple of small plates of food that he is thinking of introducing to the menu. Cant wait to return to Edinburgh for another visit.

We went to the Magnum with another couple to celebrate a joint birthday, and we were not disappointed. The food was exceptional— a farm-fresh menu that offers. twist on traditional Scottish cooking. The food was inventive, nuanced, and most importantly, delicious!
For starters, we had the traditional Scottish fish chowder called Cullen Skink and haggis spring rolls, which were both delicious. We then had Monkfish, duck breast, and lamb as main courses, all of which were fabulous, as well as the vegetable sides. Since the menu changes weekly, with whatever is freshest, other diners might have different options.
But the restaurant itself is lovely. It is elegant without being stuffy, and the vibe is warm and friendly. Since they knew it was a joint birthday they started us off with a glass of champagne for everyone at the table, and they also brought over desserts with candles and sang. The staff couldn’t be nicer and the chef couldn’t be better. We were all really impressed, and the four of us dying out a lot all over! Highly recommended.

Food was good but I have to admit I was ill later - don’t know if it was anything to do with the fish ornot - it had tasted great though it was extremely pale in colour.
I was happy to have my temperature checked and all the tales were well distanced. Friendly staff who helped us out booking us taxis later too.

The service at The Magnum is absolutely outstanding; by far one of the best places to eat in Edinburgh! As someone who suffers for a variety of food allergies, The Magnum go above and beyond to cater for me; they even go as far as to print me my own adapted menu! I continuously return to the restaurant due to their service, as well as their delicious food. Highly, highly recommend.

I’m traveling with wife and special needs son who doesn’t do well in restaurants, but wife and I were looking for some nice food. Magnum advertises takeaway, which is why I chose this place. But it turns out the chef is very protective and concerned that takeaway may not meet expectations. I explained to Jack at front-of-house about my son, which he relayed to the chef. To my surprise the chef then insisted on plating everything professionally and then I could just bring back the plates next day. Awesome solution!
My profound thanks to Jack and the chef for making our Edinburgh visit so special. It’s REALLY difficult to find good food to take away in Edinburgh, but your response to our situation will stay in our fond memories forever. The food was so awesome we went back a second night and repeated the experience. It was hands-down not only the best food but also the best service we experienced in our weeklong stay in this awesome city!

What an amazing bar /restaurant that was so very close to our hotel in St Andrews Square. My husband and I + our beagle received a very warm welcome from Rob and his team. The choice of small plates and main menu items was really interesting and they have a fine wine menu with many good wines available by the glass with an excellent choice of beers. My husband particularly enjoyed his scallops followed by the Chilli beef and spicy prawn tacos. The rhubarb panna cotta desert and coffee were also excellent. My husband went for lunch for the next two days and thoroughly enjoyed the food, drinks, atmosphere and welcome on each occasion. Paeta ( The Head Chef) certainly knows what he’s doing! We will certainly return for another visit next time we’re in Edinburgh.

If you have a group booking absolutely avoid this place at all costs, I have never had as bad customer service in my life. We had issues paying the deposit and I spoke on the phone to them almost every day in the lead up to the booking explaining that I was struggling with a payment as it was a work event. I spoke to the manager, Josh about 3 hours before the booking and confirmed we would 100% be coming. I’m arrival he told us he hasn’t reserved any tables and stated (word for word) “you haven’t paid a single penny”. Avoid!!

New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
