I don't write reviews but I had to for this place. I went in close to closing time and the beer and music was good but what made it stand out was the barman was giving customers the food from their pie machine instead of...binning them at the end of the night. Good beer, good music and a steak pie, what more could you ask?More

Amazingly close to another poor review. Went in yesterday evening, 4th Feb asked who brewed one of the beers on tap. Then the one next to it and barman said they wouldn’t serve us and leave. Absolutely no reason for it. Hadn’t been drinking beforehand....First time in my life I’ve ever been refused service. Ridiculous and embarrassing.More

We was in with another couple having drinks when a couple came in and ordered at the bar, The bar man refused to serve them, his manner was quite aggressive and he raised his voice,he offered no reason for his decision when he was asked,he...refused to give them his name and continued with his extremely unprofessional demeanor....we will not be returning to the premises again, this kind of service is not what anyone wants to witness when going for a relaxing evening outMore

Absolutely appalling service, the bar man claimed to be the manager, completely lost his temper and refused to serve us.... He would not give us his name or a reason for not serving us, the experience ruined our afternoon trip, it was totally embarrassing, however...he made a bigger fool of himselfMore

This small, cool, little bar is halfway down, or up a long, narrow close. The service was good, and fast. I liked it.

Really cool, hidden gem of a pub halfway up, or down a typical Edinburg close. Only one person on staff and she was a little slow, but we had a good time.

Popped in for a quick drink with my partner. Traditional British pub but with its own vibe and quirks. Very nice staff and had a great chat with a couple of regular locals who recommended some good places to visit on our trip

Ok so, Me and my wife traveled up to Edinburgh to meet with friends…. It’s been nearly two years since our last visit due to the horrendous pandemic…. We used to do this trip 3/4 times per year, our first port of call was always...the lovely quirky Half way house ( our meeting point) So it was Sunday the 6th of March 12pm,leaving the station straight across the road up the steps and there it was, our favourite pub in Edinburgh… the Half way House, On entering a very abrupt barman shouted quite loud Get your masks on, which (tbh we forgot as were from north east were all masks are abolished plus we never had masks on travailing up to Edinburgh) Anyways as this extremely rude loud person shouted mask on I said ohh ok, sorry we forgot bearing in mind at this point he never had his on..!!.. So, masks on… We were the first in the bar but was not long until it started to fill up… The same was happening to most of the other customers as they walked in, two customers turned around and walked out shaking they heads, very loud very abrupt and tbh very cheeky and sharp..!!.. First impressions to our favourite pubs was this has changed hands.. ( for the worst)lost all its character and personality… Anyways our two good friends arrived and walked through the door to this cheeky barman shouting guess what..??.. Yip MASKS ON ..!!.. So my friend started arguing starting by saying who you talking too.. then it started, if I had not already had a drink he would have turned around and walked out.. anyways they sat next to us so I got up the buy them a drink ( god, mask on of course) So as he was pouring drinks I explained that I was from north east and how masks etc was abolished.. not being abrupt of cheeky in any way just being chatty… What a ignorant man.. he give me this big statistic speech as how we’re making infections go up and how I’m in Scotland etc etc etc… quickest round of drinks finished off ever… We will never return to that bar and it’s a shame, I no it’s been a trying time for everyone and hopefully we’re slowly coming out of this and understand businesses have be shattered due to this… But a Word of advice to the owners… get your staff on a customer service program or you will have no business left……!!…….More

Surly unfriendly sarcastic miserable curmudgeon of a barman . Did not stay for a drink due to his demeanour. Do yourself a favour and spend your hard earned cash in an establishment where you are made to feel welcome. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This pub is such a hidden gem right at the base of Fleshmarket Close, where we happened to be staying during our visit to Edinburgh. We stopped in for the sheer convenience, and immediately felt comfortable in this cozy little spot. There were just a...few others there, so our group of 5 easily found a table to gather around. The bartender was super friendly and offered great suggestions to suit our individual tastes. She was also a saint for dealing with some of the patrons who couldn't seem to take last call for an answer. The space is pretty small, so we ended up befriending the group of locals who were there and barhopping with them when it closed around 11pm. Overall we were enamored with Halfway House and I would encourage anyone visiting old town not to overlook it!More

Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
