Love mother India - kind of like Indian tapas, get more smaller portions. The food is delicious, and the fish pakora was the highlight - phenomenal. I've heard the one in Glasgow is even better....

Hadn't eaten there for a while but glad we went back again. For Edinburgh this place has a great menu, dishes you won't see in other Edinburgh establishments. The Dosas are brilliant (not the type you find in other Asian places where they are oversized crispy ones). I like that the portion sizes are small and you can choose 2... More

I love this place. Ordering small dishes to share and enjoy works well with Indian food. The standard of service and food is high. I get withdrawals if I don't get to eat here at least once a month.

Very near to Royal mile road. Good food. Good staff. Good ambiance. Good taste. Staff listen to you. They prepare as you need. Naan is bigger in size and is good for 2. Pickle is paid one 😱. loved it.

We just arrived in Edinburgh late and really needed to eat. We followed our noses up to Mother India's Cafe and we were not disappointed! Excellent meal and kind people working at the restaurant. Highly recommended!

I have been a big fan of Indian food for many a long year, and this is one of the best places that I have been to. I think that one thing they get right is that the spicing is not excessive.

Portions are rather small, but they are not expensive. This allows you to pick several. We did just that, and every single dish that was served was absolutely perfect. Next time I'm in Edinburgh, that's where I'll have lunch :)

First visit to Edinburgh in many years and our first choice for dinner was at Mother's India Cafe. The place is informal, and was packed on a Thursday evening! I have to say that the food was very good indeed but the service was impersonal and rushed. I ordered poppadoms to start, specifically asking these to be served before the... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
