Lunched with a friend here for the first time. I like the contemporary decor and we were sat at a table that also had great views over Victoria Street, which added to the overall ambiance. We went for the a la Carte menu but there is also a fixed price menu with a more restricted choice which looked excellent value. Found the service excellent, all the staff were polite, knowledgeable and helpful and the service was speedy. We both had the seafood soup which was absolutely delicious and a real delight. We also both had the halibut which was perfectly cooked. We shared sides of spinach and creamy mash. The spinach was lovely, just wilted in butter and garlic I think. The creamy mash was also very good - it was the waiter's suggestion - but personally I thought it was a little too close in texture and colour to the cauliflower puree that the fish was sitting on and at the risk of sounding like a pleb, I think a few chips would have been a better combo! But a minor point. We has a bottle of Pecorino which was excellent. Finally, we shared a cheese platter and a 500 ml bottle of Primitivo. The cheeseboard was very good and it was clear that a bit of thought had gone into the choice of cheeses, whereas often you feel it is a bit of an afterthought. Overall, I thought this restaurant was excellent and I'm very surprised at some of the negative reviews on here. Yes, it's quite pricy but you won't find seafood cooked to this standard bang in the centre of Edinburgh any cheaper anywhere, I wouldn't have thought. Hope to be back again (though I may have to start saving now!)

Passing through Edinburgh en route home from Mallaig, this restaurant was recommended to us by an anonymous travellling companion(from Weybridge) to whom we are indebted. Billed by him as the best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh, we were not disappointed. We arrived early with no reservations, and after the statutory chin stroking and computer tapping session the maitre d showed us to a table. 6 oysters, the best filleted lemon sole I've ever been served, treacle tart and one bottle of champagne later we left a bit poorer but very satisfied. We will definitely pass on the recommendation!

This has always been one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh although it closes as early as 10pm. This evening the food was as good as ever - really delicious - but I’m afraid the service was haphazard which was unusual for us. The waiters were all friendly and helpful, but we waited for long periods of time for attention - including 15 minutes after we were seated. Sad!

I had wanted to eat here for a while as I had heard good things about it over the years so finally decided on a birthday meal. Unfortunately it was mediocre and hugely overpriced. Firstly we had to ask for the fixed price lunch menus, they weren’t volunteered. Then the tap water was poured into tiny glasses. We had to ask for a jug which arrived lukewarm with no ice or effort. The shellfish soup was not great as it was too spicy destroying the fish flavour. I ordered lemon sole. This arrived as a piece of fish on its own on the plate without even a garnish - for £30! Credit to the restaurant they did knock something of the bill when they saw we weren’t happy. But overall it just wasn’t anywhere near worth the price. There are loads of better seafood places to eat in Edinburgh.

Staff were very stressed, we did not feel welcomed and had trouble getting their attention the and we even had to give up on ordering a second glass of wine. It was slightly difficult to understand the menu, as most dishes seemed to contain only a piece of fish or seafood and were not a 'complete ' main course despite rather high prices. E.g. the "scallops" which costed about 25 Pounds were just 2 pieces of scallops. However, we ended upp ordering some fish, with side orders of spinach, and it was all delicious. And the food came in very quickly after our order. So overall, the experience was ok, although I had expected much more and was rather disappointed to be honest.

We went here with high expectations as reviews are generally good, The food most definitely is very good, all courses were well presented, beautifully cooked and very tasty. Overall its a nice place to go, couple of things which let it down was the wine list - ordered a Malbec from the full bodied list which was really weak and clearly masquerading on that list, we returned it and stuck with beer and prosecco. My pet hate - the dreaded service charge added as standard, the waiters are genuinely nice but this is a pure get the plates on the tables and away again - nothing special about it which warrants paying extra to have your plate brought to your table. Just up your prices by 10% ! Enjoyed the dinner, decent value for money but not sure Id rush back having done it though, nothing memorable about it

Overpriced for quality of food. We got sat in a corner near the kitchen door and bar. Despite the amount of staff walking past the service was poor. One guy seemed to serve us but also serve behind the bar. I had the Tempura squid to start was a tiny portion and over powered with lime. Ordered the seafood tower which arrived more as a bowl of seafood. Half a lobster, Half a small crab, mussells and clams and a couple of gritty oysters. This was£90.00 had a tower at Ship on the shore the following night with at least twice the amount of seafood. Very dissapointed and restaurant needs to organise service better and portion sizes.

Was so looking forward to this visit; talk about a let down! This was a special treat from our dearest friend but quite frankly I feel very embarrassed that she was ripped off. Firstly the wine we really wanted was not available. Surprising that a restaurant of this supposed 'calibre' didn't have it in stock despite being on their not too extensive but seriously expensive wine list. Plumped for another which was acceptable but a pretty poor second choice and overpriced considering the quality. That's the biggest fault actually with this establishment - pricing. Fish soup came warm and was not the best at £10, the oysters were tasty but then they should be at £18 for 6. Tempura squid was ok but small portion for £14. Main courses, what can I say. £18 for battered haddock, chips and pea puree. This was actually very good and enjoyed. Success almost. Short lived. Two of us ordered the cod with bouillabaisse and whipped cod roe at £28 a pop. In fact you could have popped the whole portion in a couple of chunks given the surprising and quite insulting smallness of it. If it was sensational and out of the ordinary that would have compensated somewhat but eh no, it was a piece of cod. Interesting that the picture of plate of cod on the restaurant website appears to be considerably generous in its proportions. Maybe the photographer was influenced by Lewis Carrol. The sides of a small portion of chips £6 and the baked cabbage at £8 were tasty but what is the profit margin I ask? The second bottle of wine at £40 was run of the mill and the Frangelico must have been served from a pipette. My friends and I consider ourselves to be foodies and enjoy visiting different establishments and are delighted to support local businesses. What we don't delight in is being taken for mugs. We couldn't even get ice in the water jug, it came in a separate glass. Sorry`??? Disappointing in the extreme, galling in its under achievement and mesmerising in its mediocrity. Epitomises Auld Reekie though - all fur coat and nae knickers.

We were looking forward to this for weeks and planned our Scotland trip around as many Michelin star/guide restaurants we could find and book. This is the one we were most excited for. I guess the headline of our experience would be "grossly overpriced and extremely salty". Judging by other reviews we aren't the only ones to find it painfully salty, so why not tweak it?? You guys have amazingly fresh ingredients, why ruin it with so much salt?? The scallops, monkfish and halibut were painfully salty. The crab scones were horribly unbalanced. The only things we enjoyed were the oysters and wine, but then again these are the things you have no influence over (other than purchasing and serving them). There was no ambiance and the meal felt rushed, yet when it came to clearing the table and getting the bill we were kept waiting. Cherry on top? They added items to our bill that we didn't even order. We wouldnt come here, nor would we recommend £100 per person on heavily salted seafood.

Where do I even start….simple but classy, modern, delicate, cozy, smart casual atmosphere, the windows of the restaurant really bring out the maritime feel of the restaurant! Service is on point too. Friendly, casual yet super effective, efficient and swift. Everyone wore a polite smile with a rejuvenating bouncy happiness to their walk and it actually felt good to be in a restaurant where people where happy to be working! The food was spectacular!! The menu is beautifully written, easy to follow and oh so appealing! We would’ve ordered it all if we could. We ordered 6 oysters to start- ended up with another 12 because we couldn’t stop ourselves! To follow the fish and shellfish soup, the calamari for starters then the halibut dish with the lemon sole (with the option of off or on the bone so all can enjoy!) and their side of potatoes that will blow your socks off! The wine list is a delight to read, the perfect choice for whatever your palate desires! The oyster bar is such a clever centre focal point too! Might we have found our new Edinburgh favourite? I believe so!

We came here on a Friday night and had a good meal. Our waiter was really friendly and attentive and the food arrived at a nice and relaxed pace. I had the fish and seafood soup to start and it was delicious. My main was monkfish with a peanut satay paste thing. and although the fish was cooked perfectly, it was so salty that I couldn’t finish it which was a real shame as it could have been so tasty. My boyfriend felt the squid starter was also a little salty but his lobster Thermidor was amazing. We were too full for dessert or coffee sadly. 2 courses each, a glass of fizz and a large glass of wine each brought the bill to £140 excluding tip.

This restaurant came highly recommended and the mainly seafood-fish menu was appealing. The atmosphere was informal and lively. I started with the scallops with bacon jam and hubby had the squid tempura (he found the dipping sauce a bit strong). To follow, I chose the rib of beef (beautifully and nicely cooked, but the portion size was completely over-facing). The highlight was the lemon sole with shrimp, caper and brown butter sauce - well prepared and perfectly cooked. We had declined side dishes but, without these, the main meal wasn’t very balanced. Most of the desserts weren’t for us (too heavy or sweet) and we ended up sharing a cheese platter. We thought the wine options were OK if a bit limited. The service was also mixed. The staff were friendly enough, but the whole experience felt rushed, at least before we mentioned the issue. After placing our food order, there was a short delay before our waiter came back for our wine selection and we were still discussing when the starters arrived (and went cold). Not really the experience we expected for the cost and the Michelin 'Plate' recommendation.

The roasted shellfish was absolutely superb. The seafood is fresh and delicious. Don’t believe what they say when they tell you it is for 1 - this is an excellent sharing platter! So fill yer boots and find your sea legs. The big let down was that the lobster was over cooked and was like chewing rubber, so most of this was left and the staff seemed unconcerned. Given the price would have expected a bit more from the Lobster. Langoustines were perfect. Feels a bit odd not to be by the sea (but that’s because you’re in Edinburgh!).

Yesterday, along with three friends, I ate lunch at Ondine. This is by no means our first visit, but the great food gets us back regularly. New this January was a "short" menu, the idea being that people choose several dishes. Three of us began with an excellent chowder, all four of us enjoyed the turbot with hollandaise sauce, and three finished with gorgonzola, honey, walnuts and tiny oatcakes. A delicious and beautifully presented meal. The flavours and presentation were excellent. I hope that the short menu continues. A very enjoyable lunch.

We went here as a wee treat, after reading great review. Spent over £200 and I have to say some of the fish platter was overcooked and was like eating rubber:( I absolutely love fish and have ate in many fish restaurant but had better quality food and more of it for a better price. The dessert was the treacle tart, it was mediocre. Oyster were nice and the service was really good. would possibly go back for happy hour on the oysters.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
