About
Macau Kitchen is a unique dining experience in the heart of Edinburgh. We are an independent business, owned and run by Kei (Chef) and Hoeyyn (Front of House). This restaurant is a representation of Macanese and Malacca Portuguese cuisine, following the Portuguese along the spice route. We have a classic Macanese and Malacca Portuguese menu. The fixed menu includes Macanese favourites (and customer favourites!). We also have a daily changing Malacca Portuguese menu, with two or three dishes with Malacca Portuguese food (which is the Eurasian cuisine of Malacca). This makes our way of working unique and creates a daily challenge for the Chef.

Macau Kitchen is a gem!!! The food is absolutely superb! …freshly prepared with love and passion and with quality ingredients. Every dish on the ever-changing menu is a new adventure!!! Such a welcoming, cosy and ambient place. And excellent value. You can take your own...wine, for a very modest corkage fee. It is always such a joy to go there. When I am in Edinburgh I always make it a point to go to Macau Kitchen. Hoegyn at the front of house is always so welcoming …and she remembers each and every one of her guests and greets us like we are family. Keí in the kitchen produces the most amazing food, and occasionally comes into the restaurant to see his delighted diners. It’s like one big very happy family. I love it. I feel like keeping it my secret….but it’s also the sort of place I want to shout from the roof tops about….you’ll love it! Keep doing what you’re doing, Macau Kitchen!!! ❤️❤️❤️More

Fabulous food. I just spotted this little gem whilst walking by looking for lunch. I dropped in and although they were fully booked they managed to accommodate me as a solo diner. The serai chicken was a delight- falling off the bone meat and I...could taste every flavour in the sauce and vegetables. Everything was freshly prepared from scratch and it was one of the best meals I’ve had for a long time. I was made to feel very welcome with friendly service. Great atmosphere and I will certainly be back.More

Waited for 3 months to get here, and it was well worth the wait. Food was different level. Octopus 🐙 starter and Portuguese tarts were the stars of the show for me, but all the food was tremendous! Might try the secret menu sometime!

What a find! Loved every aspect of it. As per all the other comments, the service from the husband and wife team is so genuinely welcoming. You get such a sense of the pride they clearly take in it. We couldn’t not order the signature...crispy duck curry. Even better than I’d imagined especially if you’re a dedicated bone gnawer. The giant snails off the specials board were phenomenal too as was the “polvo” octopus salad. Just go.More

Wanted to try this restaurant for some time,so finally got round to it. Was not disappointed from the minute we walked in. It's a small place with only 6/7 table's,so I would recommend booking in advance. The host and the chef(owners) both welcomed us like...long lost friends and made us very welcome and explained the menu and specials extensively. We started with the spring rolls, the cod croquettes and crispy duck confee ,all excellent, but the confee soup was a stand out. Soft rice with sweetcorn and contrast of the crispy duck skin, brilliant. On to the mains, spare ribe, which to be honest were a little too sweet for my palate but still very nice. The excellent classic minchi was delicious but the stand out dish was the very spicy chicken with mushrooms, cream and curry leaves, spot on! Finished off with pastel de nata, wow. All in all a great experience, I only wish I had come sooner.More

We loved this buzzy small restaurant. The food on offer is slightly different to the standard fare that so may restaurants provide. It was well cooked and very tasty. Staff were very efficient, friendly and engaging. We would definitely recommend.

The only disappointment here was that some of the specials on the board were unavailable, but c'est la vie. No wonder though - every other disk here is fantastic. The menu is also refreshingly brief, so one is not baffled by choice and neither are...the kitchen staff required to spread their talents thinly. Service incredibly prompt. Octopus and croquette starters were fabulous. The Eurasian Squid was off the charts. We'll be back. The place is BYOB with corkage.More

We booked this restaurant 3 weeks in advance and we received a WhatsApp confirmation telling us that they needed the table back by a certain time and that if we were 5 minutes late then our table would be given to someone else. Always a...pleasant experience when you feel unloved; not someone who is going there for a dining experience but just a case of “give us your money and leave”. We ordered the octopus salad starter, the spare ribs and the chef’s special duck. We finished the meal with the Little Macu wife’s cake. The octopus salad tasted too much of onion, a taste that stayed with us most of that night. Better prep could have kept the flavour but reduced the after effects. The spare ribs at £17.99 were a complete disgrace. The portion size was small and there was one bone without any meat. When I pointed this out to the waitress I was told that it was the chef’s “concept of the dish”. Hmmmm none of the other diners who had ordered this disaster appeared to have the chef’s concept signature !! The duck was good. Hats off to the chef. Just well cooked duck and lots of sauce with great layers. The dish cost only 50p more than the spare ribs ….. We had thought of ordering a side of stir fried greens but at £9.90 we thought better of it. The dessert, small but so too was the price. But the pastry was hot on top, the filling was lukewarm and the bottom pastry was cold. I was waiting for the waitress to tell me that this was a “concept” or the dish's tradition. But she didn’t. We left the restaurant well within our allotted time gap leaving the table free for the next payee. Would we go there again? I don’t think so. Lots of people do, and there seemed to be quite a few repeats. But overall, Edinburgh is blessed with so many better restaurants.More
