So a gang us us that studied at Napier in the 80's try and meet up every year for lunch (plus beers afterwards) - generally not in Edinburgh. This year was the 40th anniversary since we first met - so we thought it had to be Edinburgh. Chez Jules was chosen and certainly did not disappoint. Typical French and very rustic. Good simple french menus, very reasonably priced food and bevs,,, plenty of wine for us white, red, rose and sparkling. We were allocated a long table set up for the 15 of us - squashed in but it worked a treat - nice n cozy ! Most of us ate from the set menu £12.90 for 3 x courses, £10.90 for 2 x courses - Lunch Menu. Typically the choices people ate were French Onion Soup / Goats Cheese Salad for starters, followed by Bavette Steak & Frites / Coq au Vin for mains. The food was brought plated and served to us all at the same time by the buy and attentive staff. This is a good spot for, IMO, a very good value, rustic style, no airs n graces meal and catch up ! Oh and it was very busy throughout the afternoon (Sunday).

I'd always heard of this place, and walked past on a recent trip to Edinburgh so it reminded me to check it out. We went for the 3 course lunch deal, which is incredible value at £12.90. It comes with the very French accompaniments of a mustard-forward green salad, two pieces of rosette de Lyon, bread and mixed olives which was awesome and a nice touch. The service was brisk and efficient but pleasant - reminded me a lot of France, and the place has a buzzy, bistro vibe. No wonder it's packed at lunchtime with these prices and its lovely atmosphere. We both had French onion soup to start which was delicious. My mother had mussels which came with piping hot fries and a lovely garlic sauce, absolutely delicious. I had the coq au vin which was fabulous and fall apart tender. We added a carafe of rosé which was a little pricey, but restaurants do make their money on wine and I'm fine with it given the food was so cheap and great quality. One of the best impromptu meals I've ever had and I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Edinburgh.

You won't find anywhere in Edinburgh with food as good as you get at Chez Jules and at amazing prices! The set menu lunch is £12.95 with around 3 choices for each course. Have to book as it's mobbed all day so little chance of just turning up and getting a table. Upon being seated, we were provided with a lovely lettuce bowl with a beautiful dressing, some salami and a nice portion of olives. A large bowl of bread is also provided and this is all free of charge and which again is amazing value. We had the french onion soup and pate to start and both were very tasty. We all had the steak frites and it was delicious. You can request the sauce on the side as this was no problem for my brother who requested this. 2 x 2 course meal, 2 x 3 course meal, beers and a bottle of wine all for just over £80 which is honestly the best value around and especially in somewhere as busy as Edinburgh and in the current financial climate where everything is so expensive. Can't wait to go back through and will defo be booking Chez Jules for lunch or dinner or possible both!

On arrival, it was clear the restaurant was already almost full to capacity which was obvious, not only with the sheer amount of people crammed into the space but also the noise level. We initially felt this added to the atmosphere. We had booked not knowing if we were going to order from the set lunch menu or the a la carte. However, the set menu looked amazing value and we could see some of the dishes already out on other customer's tables. Our drinks order was taken and served efficiently (lovely house red) and we were soon also served a complimentary bowl of dressed lettuce, with olives and a portion of bread and butter which we thoroughly enjoyed. Our starters followed and both were fabulous (French onion soup and pate). We saw guests coming and going and the noise level increased.....with the waiting staff frantically picking up speed .... yet 40 minutes after we had finished our starters, our mains were not yet served. When they did arrive, the steak was leaking myoglobin into the frites and sauce.....and the other meal was not what was ordered. The error had not been recognised by the server who put the plates down but by another team member on passing our table and recognising we had been served the wrong dish. So, one dish was removed and we were told it would take 3 to 4 minutes for the correct dish to arrive (coq au vin). This extended out to around 15 minutes, by which time the other main meal was basically finished. So, we effectively ate our mains separately, which was not a great experience. The desserts though were served in a decent timeframe, and they were thankfully what we had ordered and were lovely (chocolate mouse and panna cotta). We will probably forgive the meal mix up and return to Chez Jules as we would like to try the main menu and allow the restaurant to redeem itself.

Appears to be a bit overstretched based on our visit. Six of us arrived at 6pm and meals arrived on the table about 7.10pm. One half lobster, one cou au vine, two steak tartare, and two fromage de chevre champignon et pesto. Lobster OK, chicken cooked well but the whole meal was bland, the steak tartar "worst ever had", and the mushroom dish (which I had ordered) - well it was lacking the honey and basil pesto, instead it appeared to have gained the vegan haggis that forms part of the next dish listed on the menu. My meal was a real disappointment. The vegan haggis, if that is what it was, was wet and bland. The mushroom could have been shown a bit more heat in the cooking. Having waited so long, however, I reluctantly ate what was in front of me hoping to raise matters when asked the cursory "is everything OK?" but the question never arose. On settling up at the end the disappointment with the steak tartar was raised (apparently new chef and only their second night) but I didn't manage to mention my disappointment with my meal because in what appeared to be great haste to clear our table the most impressive stack of plates and cuttlery I have ever seen anyone attempt to carry was dropped spectacularly to the floor. Karma? 10pm and at home, my stomach began to become somewhat troublesome, and so began an uncomfortable night. 4.30am I'm throwing up. Note, only had water with meal as I was driving so it wasn't due to over indulging. A coincidence? Perhaps, but later learnt that the other member of our party who had the same meal had been a little unwell, although not as bad. I am a meat eater but do like to try something different when out. Vegetarians and vegans, however, don't appear to be well catered for at Chez Jules - I think just three options, or perhaps four if you get served a mix of two dishes as I was. Ambiance? As others have noted the background music is too obtrusive and the tables too cramped. The back of my chair was constantly being knocked by people pushing past between me and the piano, the worst culprits actually being two members of staff who should have known better and tried harder. Will we give Chez Jules another chance? Probably not.

Ouf! If I was you, I certainly would not give Chez Jules another chance, it sounds just absolutely terrible. Let me resume your review and by doing so ensure that you will definitely not be coming back : "Overstretched, bland, the worst I ever had, lacking, disappointment, bland, waited so long, disappointment, disappointment (again!), uncomfortable, throwing up, obstrusive, too cramped, should have tried harder" See, do not!

This restaurant gets a lot of hype, none of it deserved, in my opinion. The tables are incredibly squeezed together (both my husband and I are slim, and had difficulty making our chair spacing comfortable). The noise level is unacceptable. The food is definitely "French" but certainly not top quality. And to top off our evening, they confused (or the orders computer confused) our order, so they thought the table behind us, who came in 30 minutes after we did and had evidently ordered the same entrees) were to be served before they brought our dinners. The waitstaff eventually acknowledged the mix-up but didn't apo;logize or even offer a complimentary dessert or coffee. Would highly NOT recommend.

Unfortunately this one didn’t live up to the hype! We tried here for lunch and were instantly turned away due to no booking so decided to book in for dinner. The greeting wasn’t the warmest and the service to order wasn’t exactly friendly, we ordered french onion soup and steak frites with peppercorn sauce. Drinks were quite slow and not the best quality, the starter was okay and you can’t really go wrong with it so we enjoyed that. The steak and fries looked great, but was absolutely drowned in the strongest peppercorn sauce we’ve ever tried, it completely ruined the meal and you could taste nothing but pepper - really a shame as we were looking forward to it, I wouldn’t recommend it. The worst part however was when we came to pay and we were told “there isn’t a service charge on the bill, so would you like to give a tip?” Both me and my partner found this extremely rude and uncomfortable, we then felt obliged to leave a tip for food and service that wasn’t very good. I have no problem leaving tips and if there was a service charge on the bill we’d never ask to remove. However to be outright asked if we were leaving one with card machine in hand was really uncomfortable, if you’re going to do this, please just add the service charge instead.

The guide recommended the restaurant to us because they had a menu until 4:00 pm. We entered at 3:55 p.m. and they told us that we could not order a menu, if not a menu, they were not interested in offering the menu to tourists, plus regular, scarce and expensive food. , fatal I do not recommend it

We arrived 10 minutes early but there was already a 'Q' of about 12 outside for the 1.30pm reservations, but at 1.30 prompt we were through the door and seated. Large bottle of chilled water on the table promptly followed by a basket of fresh bread, a plate of salami and a bowel of pickles for us to nibble while we worked out what to choose from this amazing priced 3 course menu.I choose the 'pate' followed by the mussels for main. Large slice of inhouse made rough pate with slice of toasted bread which was superb, Mussels in white wine and a bowel of Frites along with garlic butter to dip them in was a delight.. Finished off with Chocolate mouse. It was packed, but service was slick, atmosphere remined me of Paris in the 70's. 3 course for 4 along with wine & beer under £70 what a bargain. Food was great as was the service, but you must book. for lunch which lasts from 12 till 4.

Booked for a Saturday, just my wife and I. It was a rare sunny & warm Edinburgh day when we visited the basement bistro for a late lunch and when we entered, the noise of a packed room enjoying good food and wine was immediate and a little overwhelming! But this was a superb atmosphere, warm, convivial & welcoming. We were served quickly and provided with a house red which was perfectly moreish. The lunchtime special is excellent value at £12.90, we opted for onion soup and pork terrine to start, then moules frites for my wife & steak frites for me. The steak came with a peppercorn sauce which I didn’t realise; but it was not too strong and I scoffed the lot. We rounded things off with the panacotta & chocolate mouse. £12.90. On a Saturday in central Edinburgh. Exactly! The atmosphere, service & food all combined for an excellent way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We’ll be back.

How on earth do Chez Jules continue to provide a three-course set lunch for just £12.90? It feels like an act of charity towards the people of Edinburgh! I went for the terrine de campagne, onion chutney and toast for starter; the steak au poivre for main course; and a wonderfully light chocolate mousse for dessert. My partner grazed on the complimentary green salad, bread, olives and rosette de Lyon to start; enjoyed coq-au-vin for main course; and the chocolate mousse for dessert. It was all delicious and accompanied by a carafe of white wine. Service was impeccable and, as usual, an authentic French atmosphere, even down to the choice of music.

Booked a table and on arrival we were presented with a buzzing ambience, everyone seemed to be having fun and prior to service the other customers meals looked very inviting. We ordered a bottle of house red and some complimentary pre dinner snacks arrived. We weren’t left waiting and in no time had placed our order. The food arrived promptly and was well presented, it was also very tasty. Half way through our meal the lights were dimmed at which point the lit candle on our table came into play and made for a romantic setting. We’re back in Edinburgh in around a month and I’ll endeavour to make another booking, highly recommended.

We have been at this restaurant several times before and have had an excellent experience. Yesterday was quite different. The food was significantly overpriced, this was not evident from their online menu, so this was an unwelcomed Christmas surprise to start our visit. The main course was served on top of our starter, we deferred this and then had to wait 30 mins. Our side orders were presented after we had finished our main course, this was after a reminder to the waitress. We then had to wait a further lengthy time for our sweet course. A severe shortage of staff may have been a reason, but being the 3rd group in I suspect other groups experiences were much worse service than ours!

Thank you for your very diplomatic title, Frankly when I read your review, I think I would have been harsher. Possibly titles like : "What a mess!" or "Xmas nightmare" maybe in French "Quel bordel!" ou "Mais qu'est ce qu'y se passe ?" ou "c'est dégueulasse!"... Merci

The Ambience Usual, lively busy but how many tables can you get in a place? The Food Usual lovely start with House Salad and nibbles. Starters the escargot’s were bullets, completely overcooked, the Goats Cheese starter was nice. Mains; my husband’s steak was lovely but my Confit of Duck I sent back as it was not cooked correctly. The skin was soft and slimy. One of the people serving us (there were multiple people) said that was the last of the duck. Going on what my husband said about the steak I went for that as an alternative. In my experience (55 years of eating out) they would take away everyone’s meal so that we can eat together, after all that’s why we went together! But no!?! I said to my husband to eat. Mine arrived 10 minutes after he finished! The steak was fine but left most of it due to the timings. The Service Perfunctory! We were charged on the final bill for 2 steaks and a Confit of Duck! When I pointed this out there was no apology. They took the Confit off!!! And charged for the steak that I didn’t want in the first place but had to have due to their incompetence at cooking a french staple! What a shame, we have eaten dozens of times and loved it. Sadly we wont be back!

We made a reservation for 1330, but that didn't seem to matter as people were being seated anyway, we eventually got seated around 10 minutes later, not a major problem as the restaurant was very busy and it is/was slap bang in the middle of festival season. This was our 4th visit here, and the food has always been of good quality, and that wasn't any different on this occasion, although there is no way on gods' green earth that there is a £4 difference between the lunch menu goats cheese salad and the a la carte goats cheese salad, my confit de canard was well cooked although overloaded with green beans. The service this time round was poor, we received our bread and rosette which was very nice after about 10 minutes of waiting, it was then at least another 20 minutes of waiting before our drinks order was taken, which they got wrong, and then another 10 minutes before our food order was taken, I did snap at the poor waitress, but in reality the situation was not her fault, and I quickly apologised - the restaurant was full, yes, but there was 3 members of staff cleaning tables, from what I saw, 2 bar staff, 1 front of house who seemed more interested in getting people in than ensuring that the people inside were being looked after and there was one random member of staff who kept appearing and disappearing and mostly seemed to be carrying bottles of water. The food was good but I felt expensive for what it was - on my last visit I felt like I was a transaction, on this occasion I didn't even feel that special. The poor waitress taking the orders needed much more support, we did tip because you could see how hard the staff were working, but they need much better support from the managers. Unfortunately on our next visit to Edinburgh we will choose somewhere else for our lunch.

Wow! I have to say that the title of your review got my full interest! Well done! Unfortunately, whilst your title is punchy, I find the content fastidious to read and just lacking! But because it might have taken a fair amount of time to write it, to match your effort I think it is only fair if I shared with you my thoughts as I read your review, here it is : So you have been in 4 times and the food was always of good quality! Ok, relief! good And it was during the festival and it was busy, Ok, normal And the food was of good quality again, ok, I know this is what we do best! And you thought that how on God’s Green earth the price between the lunch goat cheese starter and A la carte goat cheese starter could be so different? Ok, so we decide on our prices ! And I did not know of the expression of “God’s Green Earth” And I guess on this same Godly green earth you wondered why the confit duck (although nicely cooked) came with so many green beans ? Ok, so maybe we can adjust the number of green beans (I will need to check) And then you had to wait 10 minutes for your green salad and Rosette de Lyon and pickles and bread… Ok (at least the water was already on the table) And then you had to wait another 20 minutes for your drinks order… Ok a bit slow And then another 10 minutes for your food order… Ok (by the way, I can also read different number on my watch, like 1, 3…9, it might make your next review more interesting) And then you snapped at the poor waitress Ok And then you felt bad and quickly apologised to the poor waitress, Ok And then the restaurant was full, OK And because the restaurant was full, I guess there was 3 staff cleaning the just vacated tables, OK And then one front of house person greeting new customers, Ok And then a random staff member appeared from time to time, mostly carrying bottles of water (I am intrigued but OK) to the recently cleaned tables by the 3 staff members for the new people brought in by the front of house staff member in the busy restaurant during the festival… Ok this starts to make sense, feels like an organisation. And then you thought it was expensive Ok And then you did not feel special, you felt like a transaction, (I am not sure I know what it feels like to feel like a transaction, but OK And then you still left a tip (thank you) Ok And then you decided that you will eat somewhere else the next time! And I am thinking it is a really good decision.

New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
