Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We dropped by twice during our stop in edinburgh, first time on a late night, whisky-fueled binge, and a second time to get a handy meal that we could take with us. Great tasting pies that seem to be at a price point that will help you get rid of the coins starting to weigh heavily in your pocket. Curiously, the nice friendly people manning the counter on both occassions we were there were not local scots but spaniards.

Our family of 5 unexpectedly came across The Piemaker while looking for an affordable quick bite at lunchtime: it definitely met our expectations. Given very limited seating, there was not enough space for us to eat inside, so we took the pies to go. Be sure to know what you would like before placing your order.

Huge Selektion of excelent meat pies. We went there several times while in Edinburgh, because the value for money you get here for a quick lunch is just perfect. My personal favorite is the steak pie. Our kids loved the sausage roll.

Little bakery in the city center that specialises in traditional Scottish pies. Really difficult resisting buying one if you are passing by and you are hungry. The are sold at a cheap price and look so inviting. I had one with haggis and one macaroni pie; the former was to die for and a must try.

The pie I had was traditional Scotch pie and it was not one of the best I've had. It was sloppy on the inside and a bit bland. Nothing to write home about. The woman behind the till was horrible. Their card machine wasn't working properly and she just kept shrieking at me "try again". I don't expect to be shouted at by anyone serving me food, especially not if it's their issue. I'd rather go to Greggs, Greggs food is awful but their staff are less unhinged.

I’m not normally in town but I was passing here and I remembered my dad enjoying it 10 or so years ago. So I took a very last minute decision and went in. I’m so glad I did. The sausage roll I ordered is the best I’ve had that I can remember and I couldn’t resist getting a cookie too (which was also delicious). The service was really good too. Can’t wait for the next time I’m in town as I definitely will be stopping here again!

I've eaten here for years. Never over priced and always excellent. Though in recent times the macaroni pies have not been as good as they were. This forced me to order the firey cheese dog instead, which is far superior to even the best macaroni pie.

This was a convenient lunch spot on route to Holyrood. We were quite disappointed by the macaroni pie (our original reason for finding the place) as the pastry was too hard and the cheese very sickly. The bridie was pretty good, but the highlight was definitely the tattie dog (a hot dog wrapped in a hash brown). A fantastic creation I can’t believe I haven’t seen elsewhere before!

We tried five different items over the weekend, and can highly recommend the Tattie Dog, Fiery Cheesy Dog and Macaroni Pie. Lots of interesting choices that are not available in similar establishments down south. Prompt, friendly service. Check it out!

The Piemaker is a wee shop in Edinburgh with limited seating. It is definitely more of a takeaway establishment. The menu of pies is amazingly large and the prices are EXCELLENT! My husband and I both chose Macaroni and Cheese pies. They were delicious. The crust was flaky and delicious. However, the macaroni and cheese part was YUMMY! It was creamy and cheesy deliciousness. Best of all the pie was priced at 2 pound 40. A cheap, but filling meal. We took ours back to the hotel to eat, and it was still warm.

New to Edinburg and found this place on trip advisor. So far we have 4 different pies and are going back for more. So quick and affordable. The pastry has been delicious and so impossibly thin. The fillings are amazing and so good. Traditional pasty and steak pies are our favorites so far, but the jury is still out since we aim to try them all before we leave!

Great & truly authentic traditional pies. Crust is delicate multi-layers of flaky, buttery goodness. Huge selection of fillings from traditional to wonderful pepper steak. Sweet turnovers are equally good. A very popular place with good food, great price, & friendly service. Definitely a “must stop” in Edinburgh.

Delicious pies, rolls, pasties, turnovers, etc. Many options for meat eaters but also 6 vegetarian and 6 vegan options. Friendly staff, just really good food. Very limited seating so you might have to do takeaway.

Really diverse range of options, with surprisingly good veggie ones. All our food was hot with amazing pastry and tasty fillings. Great value place for fast food if you’re in the area!

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
