I don't manage to get here often but without a doubt this is the best restaurant in Edinburgh. The quality of the food is second to none and service is impeccable. I highly recommend a visit here.

Dear guest Sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your afternoon tea as we aim to exceed your expectations and often do. I am a little perturbed that you would write a second review for the same afternoon tea visit 12 months apart as this is against TripAdvisor rules. We do hope that you come back and post a... More

We were lucky enough to have the restaurant to ourselves as it was mid week. Tried to convince my partner that I had arranged it that way. Meal was excellent. Service was outstanding but not obtrusive. We will definitely be coming again.

We were in for afternoon tea yesterday afternoon. The hotel itself is a nice setting and generally clean and tidy. The afternoon tea itself was very nice with a great selection of teas to choose from and some very nice sandwiches and savoury snacks. However the one things that spoiled it slightly was the level of service. We were sat... More

Popped in for Sunday afternoon tea having read the good reviews, but had a poor experience: - Dining room was well decorated and comfortable, but lacked any atmosphere as staff failed to keep on top of the background music. This was particularly evident as there were only two other couples dining - Afternoon tea was all very tasty and well... More

We had an excellent meal and staff were very attentive without being at all intrusive. Coffee and truffles in the drawing room with lighted candles was very special. Highly recommended.

Stayed at the Howard and decided to eat in the restaurant - what a great decision !! All 4 of us were delighted by all 3 courses and the fillet steak (recommended by our waiter James) was sublime James himself was remarkably attentive and made our whole party feel special Would definitely dine here again

I booked a table here for afternoon tea after an interment service. The range of teas was very good and I really enjoyed my Formosa Oolong. The food was also excellent including sandwiches, scones, cakes and even tablet. The service was good but unobtrusive. At £16 a head it was very good value. Highly recommended for a genuine Scottish afternoon... More

Description
Set in a luxuriant Georgian townhouse, The Howard Hotel is among Edinburgh's most beautiful. Its restaurant, the classically designed Atholl, gives the visitor the impression of stepping back in to a Jane Austen novel. Original features, from decorative mouldings to sash windows are simply decorated in white while a marble fireplace gives a charming sense of history. A peaceful, relaxing atmosphere sets The Atholl apart from the hectic Edinburgh restaurant scene while the traditional Scottish dishes are a joy for you Caledonian gastronomes. Whether it's an informal lunch with friends or a dinner date to impress the menu hits the right note every time.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
