Got a table at short notice which was lucky. Food was really excellent and made wonderfully. Service was quick and friendly. Definitely would go again but will book in advance for prime time!

Great seasonal lunch menu with varied choice, good value, fine dining. We visited Edinburgh for the day and this restaurant was recommended to us. We were so pleased it was. Friendly, helpful staff and a delicious lunch.

I have found my new favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed. The ladies who looked after our table to the rear of the restaurant were sublime. I am just sorry I didn't get the name of one lady. I will email the restaurant separately. The food was amazing, my husband had the Christmas set... More

Might have had something to do with booking ahead or it being St Andrews day evening, but we were seated in a lovely private alcove above the main floor overlooking the high street. Great cocktails, good selection of wine. Superb seasonal menu, cooked to perfection and prettily presented. Friendly service, a great night.

We had no expectations when it came to dining in Edinburgh, but the surprises just kept coming. Here at Angels with Bagpipes we might as well have been in San Francisco or New York when it came to upscale, latest cooking techniques, and beautifully presented dishes. We are talking small plates with tiny items presented like a painting. I had... More

delightful meal, ambience, service on the Royal Mile. Definitely one for a special occasion rather than a tourist refill. Makes really good use of Scottish ingredients but thankfully no chicken Balmoral within sight .

Close to the perfect meal, could find no fault. Service was first class as were the surroundings, very relaxed atmosphere adds to the eating experience. We started with the Beef Tartare and Crab followed by the Chateaubriand to share. We followed with the Peanut Butter Brownie accompanied with the recommended desert wine, fantastic combination. Close to perfect well always leave... More

Really enjoyed my first visit here. This is an absolutely beautiful restaurant and the service was lovely. Food was fantastic. I had goats cheese to start, lamb for my main course then chocolate and peanut butter brownie for dessert. Everything was cooked perfectly - the only small gripe was that portions were tiny! Could have eaten it twice!

Me and my husband had the 3 course set lunch here and all of the food was delicious. It is fine dining, with fine dining portions, but that was perfect for us. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the service was very efficient. £21.50 for a 3 course lunch and the food is of a very high standard. Great... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
