Where do we start.. we booked a table at Howies on the recommendation of our receptionist at our hotel and were not disappointed. We got the rosemary focaccia and olive oil to start which was amazing. For starters I got the Parsnip to start and my boyfriend got the Haggis, neeps and tatties. The parsnip was excellent but the haggis was the star of the show (especially this being the first time trying it). For mains we both went for the fresh catch of the day- which was salmon. Hands down the best salmon we’d both had! And the cheddar mash was divine. Lastly, we shared a sticky toffee pud for dessert- only criticism would be that it only came with one scoop of ice cream... for a three course meal for two and an excellent bottle of red came to £88 (including tip) which we thought was a bargain- Johnny our waiter was also was an excellent host, couldn’t fault his service. Definitely give this one a try if you’re in Edinburgh for a traditional Scottish feast!

My partner and I visited this restaurant on Saturday 15th February after a day of sightseeing around Greyfriars and the Royal Mile. I'd been looking to have some haggis again as it had been several years since my last visit to Scotland. My partner has a medical condition that means she's unable to process food with chunks in it, e.g. some ice creams with pieces of fruit in them e.g. strawberry. When we explained this to our waitress Sophie, she was extremely helpful in suggesting the options that would be suitable for my partner. We chose to have the haggis, neeps and tatties as a starter and the casserole of the day (beef on our visit) as our main choice with Irn Bru to drink. The haggis, neeps and tatties were extremely smooth texture and very tasty. The beef was very tender and the vegetables were also very soft, ideal for my partner. When Sophie brought the dessert menus, she remembered my partner's condition and advised her which options she felt were suitable for her. We both chose the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream and delicious sauce and also asked for a 2 scoops of BlackBerry ice cream so we could have an extra scoop each of that flavour. The bill came to £66.95 for the two of us which although is more than we normally pay, we felt that the food quality and the service were well worth it, and the tip we gave Sophie was more than the suggested 10% service charge. I hadn't been impressed with our hotel breakfast and asked Sophie if she could recommend a restaurant for breakfast on the Sunday and she said the owners also had another restaurant above Howie's that was a popular breakfast destination, Scott's Kitchen. In summary, the food and service could not be beaten in our opinion and although more expensive than our usual restaurants, the price was well worth it.

Hi there Thank you very much much for your review, we are absolutely delighted to read your feedback! We don't think you can get more Scottish than haggis, neeps and tatties plus IRN BRU to drink - delicious! We're really pleased to read that you felt Sophie showed special attention to any food intolerances. We will be sure to pass your feedback onto her. Ah yes, our sister venue Scotts Kitchen is located on the terrace above Howies on Victoria Street! The Scotts Big Breakfast is must, and also includes haggis. Thank you again, Howies

I was fortunate enough to be asked to meet some work colleagues at this restaurant, we had not been before. We had booked, the table was ready and the staff were friendly. We ordered a round of drinks (wine) and some tap water, they offered bottled or tap water. The menus was varied with a fair number of Scottish dishes. We ordered our staters I had Cullen skink, it was fantastic, one of the best I’ve had, our mains and sweets were equally excellent, the food was excellently priced, we also enjoyed a bottle of wine. When the bill cane the waitress went to great lengths to point out the service charge and our option to not pay it. Highly recommended, would certainly go again.

Visited recently after booking a table around 6 weeks prior. Really looking forward to it after reading all the reviews. I have to say we were left underwhelmed by the experience. When we arrived we were welcomed by a friendly guy who showed us to our table. I immediately felt disappointed as the table for 2 faced an emergency exit door and the street. It was busy so I didn’t feel able to ask for another table but I do regret not asking. The waiter who took our meal choices wasn’t particularly friendly just very matter of fact. I found the restaurant very noisy and the tables close together. I realise now we had booked when there were still lots of people eating from the early dining offer and realised this was a mistake. Positives were able to bring your own wine and pay corkage. My husband said his mussels starter was good although no bread to accompany them. He said his hake was also quite nice too. I had Cullen skink and it’s was disappointing, not very flavoursome. The beef casserole was a small portion and the beef dry and chewy. My husband asked for affogato and the icecream was sat in the espresso rather than it being poured over. May sound trivial but when we discussed the overall experience we both agreed we have had far better and would not return. We feel that to visit when they the early evening offer is available then it would probably offer decent value but for full price in our opinion is does not.

We had dinner today at Howies Victoriastreet. Food was good, but service was extremely unprofessional: stressfull, unpersonal and many mistakes (had to order wine and coffee three times by different waiters). No second time for us.

Ordered a salmon dish and found another half eaten white fish while eating. When brought to the staff's attention, little was done to remedy it and they claimed it was part of the dish but only after they realized their mistake. Waitress originally said there shouldn't be any other fish in there. She changed her answer after she saw and we questioned why there was an obviously eaten fish in our dish. Was still charged for the gross dish. I do not recommend

Hi CHCwun Thank you for your review. We must say that we are rather confused to read your review, certainly not one we've come across before! We can 100% assure you that there would not have been a half eaten fish in your dish - was it flaked haddock perhaps? As you can see, your review isn't the kind of feedback we are used to and therefore it would be good to hear more about your experience via email. We would greatly appreciate if you could please email us noting the date you dined and the dish you ordered. Our email address is victoriastreet@howies.uk.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards, Howies

my boyfriend and I went to howies to try the famous Scottish haggis with whiskey. at the beginning, a waitress said all the time that we had to stay less than 1:30 because they had another reservation. When ordering the food, the waiters were very inconvenient and came to ask more than 5 times within 10 minutes if we were ready to order, or order a drink. when the food arrived, we found the dish too small for the amount charged. the food it's fairly good. Our experience was not good either because the waiters came all the time to the table, and you could see that they were anxious for us to leave. after that we went to another bar. Uncomfortable experience, we do not recommend.

Took my friends here upon recommendation - minds were blown. My desire was meat and good meat but half of the party were vegetarian so wanted to make sure they got equally as glorious options despite their unwise choice of diet (I love them really - the foolish herbivores). We had two gnocchis who said it was perfect, one salad (I know, a salad, on a Saturday night!) who said it was so packed full of flavour and protein, it tasted amazing, I had the lamb; which was thigh slappingly incredible: pink on the inside, crispy on the outside and ethically sourced from a farm on the boarders. My dear friend went for the mussels and not even an eyebrow was raised by the waiting staff as she leaned back to drink the remainder of the dish like Henry 8th. My friends have had a tough few months and I wanted to find a place that would really treat them but where they could also relax and be themselves - and we found it. I am fortunate enough that I live here so will be going as much as I can now!

On arrival we only had to wait 5 mins to be seated. We were shown to our table, which was placed, raised up, in a small alcove. I am not a claustrophobic, but it was a tight squeeze to get in, and the table was rather small for x2 plates of food. Service was prompt and efficient. We had x2 courses, both of which were well cooked and presented professionally. Would advise requesting not to have an alcove table. Be advised there is a 10% service charge added too your bill (I nearly double tipped).

We're so pleased you enjoyed your meal with us! Our building is hundreds of years old so it's packed with history and has many quirks to it. That particular table is one of the favourites, but we realise it may not be to everyones taste!

1st visit, there wasn't great selection on the dinner menu to chose from. The 2 men got steaks and half of lobster on top with v skinny fries. £82 for those 2, over priced. Myself, salmon with was a sml portion of baby pots on place, £16.95 was delicious but v sml. My veggie friend had the cauliflower steak that she enjoyed, again £15 overpriced for what she got. Everything was nice, but will not be back

Very nice ambiance and good location. The restaurant features Scottish specialties and gives them a contemporary, creative twist. I had rump of lamb with black garlic purée, spring pea tendrils and whole peas, mashed and roasted potatoes, and a piquant mint sauce. It is probably the best lamb I have ever had, the essence of Spring flavors. I followed that with another seasonal favorite, poached rhubarb with rhubarb and strawberry sorbets and custard. Again, the individual flavors were delicious but built into a wonderful melange of taste that was perfect for late April. The wine list by the glass is small but offered sufficient choices to suit all the meals at our table. (Wines by the bottle are more plentiful.) There is also an extensive whisky selection for those so inclined. The service was friendly and attentive and the restaurant offers good value for the price. Highly recommend making a reservation as this location is very popular and well-worth it.

We frequently visit when in Edinburgh, at least twice a month but there was something lacking this time. Food was much slower than usual but still tasty. Service was very impersonal this time, usually remembered by staff. Missed a couple of the familiar staff faces, possibly a change in management as it just didn't have the same personal service we were used too which is why we loved the place.

I had the pleasure of dining here with two friends last friday night. We where so happy the team managed to squeeze us in having not been organised and only booked on the phone a few hours previously. Firstly the venue is beautiful and has a cosy vibe, they have put in lovely screens to break up the dining area due to Covid-19 which fit in perfectly with the decor and actually look like part of the design (other restaurants should take note). The service was excellent, laid back and extremely professional. We all had the scottish salmon and it was supberb, good sized portions and cooked to perfection, you could see and taste the high quality of all the ingredients! My friends had the banoffee pie for dessert (again massive) and I had the freshly made sorbets which were delicious. Looking forward to returning soon with my husband and/or trying the Waterloo venue next! 😊

Found the place very pretentious , a comment was made because we never ordered a starter which was unnecessary. Ordered the beef casserole which was tasteless and the meat wasnt cooked long enough as was still very chewy . We ordered two bottles of coke which were flat as if they had been lying open for ages . The only thing I enjoyed was the sticky toffee pudding .

Thanks for the review. I am sorry you didn't enjoy your visit. Howies, is a very casual, relaxed restaurant and we were quite taken aback to be called pretentious. Re the flat coke issue, we take the Govt guidelines very seriously indeed and please be assured we do not leave anything open or lying around, it is just is not an option. Had you mentioned this at the time we would have replaced them immediately. It really helps us as a business to know how your experience is at the time so we can rectify any issues you have. We always appreciate all feedback so thank you for taking the time to write about it. Kind regards, The Howies Victoria Team.

Having a few days away with the wife for my fortieth birthday and on our way back from the castle saw this place and liked the look of the menu. Specialising in game and fish sounded amazing. We didn't book but we're greeted warmly and shown to a table straight away 7pm on a Wednesday the place was nicely busy without feeling overly crowded. All covid guidelines were adhered to and the place felt very well run. We were offered water and drinks and then our food order was taken very timely. I had the Cullen skink and my wife had the wood pigeon. Both were beautiful but my wife's dish definitely won in our humble point of view. For mains we had the venison launch and catch of the day and again both were amazing. Fresh tasting very well cooked and exceeded what we were expecting. There was a slight mix up with my wife's main course but both meals were taken away and replaced and the entire team could not have been more polite about it. I had a cheese board and my better half who definitely won all three courses in this meal had the sticky toffee pudding and we were both very pleased with what was offered up. The manager then compensated our bill for us and while we all got very polite and attempted to talk each other out of it, we greatfully accepted this and would like to genuinely thank everyone for their hospitality. We both would highly recommend Howie' s, Victoria Street the restaurant is homely and smart and the food and service impecabble. If we were staying longer we would visit again, we will have to try again next time we are in Edinburgh. Thank you

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
