On a previous occasion I went to the restaurant near the rail station and I have to say this was equal. Food and presentation was excellent and staff very friendly. Well done!

My step daughter had booked a meal for us at 1.45 pm on Boxing Day. When we arrived, the restaurant was closed. There was a notice on the door saying it was closed until " 2nd of Jan" because of staff shortages. No notification on...line. Will not be visiting again Maggie BrewsterMore

my boyfriend and I went to howies to try the famous Scottish haggis with whiskey. at the beginning, a waitress said all the time that we had to stay less than 1:30 because they had another reservation. When ordering the food, the waiters were very...inconvenient and came to ask more than 5 times within 10 minutes if we were ready to order, or order a drink. when the food arrived, we found the dish too small for the amount charged. the food it's fairly good. Our experience was not good either because the waiters came all the time to the table, and you could see that they were anxious for us to leave. after that we went to another bar. Uncomfortable experience, we do not recommend.More

After a wonderful day wandering around Edinburgh my friend and I decided to go for lunch at this great place . Upon entering you are greeted by the staff in a very friendly way . The building has such a fantastic decor . The food...was wonderful. For starters we went for the cullen skink and wood pigeon which were both excellent . They were full of flavour . The mains were wonderful . I went for the venison casserole while my friend went for the salmon . Both of these dishes were succelent in terms of the cooking and tenderness . The flavours were brilliant. If you are looking for a place to eat in Edinburgh which serves traditional food at a brilliant price then this is the place for you . You will be very pleased and full .More

We've eaten here many times and the service has always been as good as the food but not any more .Booked for dinner last week and there were crossed wires as to the exact time for the booking but the way the manager handled it...was rude , unprofessional and patronising and resulted in us going elsewhere , to one of the new independent restaurants that are springing up post COVID. Very sad to see standards of service slip here and it certainly isn't what is used to be service wise at least .More

We had a terrific meal here yesterday evening. We were in a snug little booth, which was fun, but most important - the food was great! Between us we had fish and game and all was really good: beautifully cooked, fabulous and clever flavours, and...lovely sides. It was busy and lively, and our waitress was unflustered, helpful and cheerful. It's mid-price range for a top quality meal - loved it!More

I visited on a Saturday lunch time and wasn't disappointed. The last time I visited here was about 10 years ago and this visit was well overdue. Great welcome, great table, really friendly staff. The food was lovely, I had the fermented fennel and beetroot...salad for a starter, the chicken breast with pomme anna and tarragon cream and the sticky toffee pudding, all an absolute delight. A really very pleasant couple of hours and full tummy. Thank youMore
