This was a delicious fish and chips shop on South Clerk Street, which is now sadly closed down. Excellent fish and chips. The daily special, within which the fish varies each day, is exceptional value, and has provided me many a tasty meal. The staff...More

Best for fish and chips on the street (which is saturated with takeaways) Good variety of fish and cooked to order.

Everything is cooked fresh, so takes slightly longer than your average chippy (where everything has been sitting under the lights for hours, and now tastes like an old pair of shoes), but of course, it is well worth the wait! A wide selection, and great,...More

My previous favourite chippy was Alba D'Oro, but having moved to the Southside, I've been on the hunt for an excellent chippy and was encouraged to try the Newington Traditional fish bar seeing as it was linked with the Tailend on Leith Walk, and I...More

Now under the same ownership as the famous Tailend and the same very high quality and standards are obvious here. The best fish and chips I've had in the area by far. I've moved out of the area in the last few weeks but still...More

This is our local fish and chip shop and it really is the best in town. The food is always cooked freshly to order which means nothing has been sitting around in a heating cabinet for hours prior to you getting it in your hand....More

I've been to the Newington many times and it is without doubt, the best chippy in Edinburgh. The chips are always brilliant, soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. I've asked how they do them and have been told that they...More

The chips were pretty greasy and not very nice. The fish was OK but greasy. Scotland's chippies are a load of rubbish in my experience, confused even. You need to go to Lancashire for a proper chippy tea. It was a big feed at least.

Great venue and the menu looks impressive, but both the fish and the chips appeared to be cooked from frozen - very disappointing for the price. Been twice now and won't make this mistake again.

Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around
university buildings in Southside, the sort of
neighbourhood that supports a long string of
second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for
just a few pounds. In August the student population is
replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here
for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and
arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking
