About
Our story began many years ago in Nam Dinh province in Northern Vietnam. Back then food was much more than something to fill our bellies. It was the smell of delicate lemongrass and aromatic herbs swirling around the kitchen. It was the warmth and spice of shared Pho Broth on Vietnamese Lunar New Year. It was laughter around the dinner table, and it was the very best of family times. Now we bring contemporary Vietnamese food to Edinburgh, and the vibrant culture that goes with it. We’re not about fast food, street food or eat-up-and-go. At SEN we welcome you as friends. Take the time to relax, make yourself comfortable, enjoy delicious cuisine and learn about its origins. From our signature Pho (pronounced ‘fuh’), warming Lantern Curry or fresh, tongue-tingling Salads, join us to experience the colours and flavours of modern Vietnam. If you’re lucky, we might even let you into the secret of our perfectly crispy Hanoi spring rolls. We think Vietnamese food is special. Thanks

We had really enjoyable family dinner at SEN Vietnamese Dining this evening. The menu is extensive - with an excellent variety of vegan and vegetarian options as well as fish and meat options. We had a range of choices including Summer rolls, sticky tofu tamarind, Grilled Pork salad bowls, Beef Pho and Chilli and Lemongrass Tofu. All of the food we had was absolutely bursting with freshness and packed with flavour. Really impressive and brought back happy memories of previous holidays in Vietnam. The lanterns adorning the ceiling immediately remind you of being in Hoi An. The team were all friendly, attentive and really helpful. It was such a nice touch that the owners took the time to chat with all diners to ensure we were happy with everything. The enthusiasm of the owners and quality of food should justly ensure success for Sen. We will be regulars !

I had waited with anticipation for the Covid restrictions to ease so that we could finally try this new addition to the vibrant food scene in Edinburgh’s Newington area. Suffice to say, Sen still managed to exceed expectations. Upon arrival, we were greeted very warmly into the cosy and gorgeously lit venue. We had had to wait a few extra minutes for our table to be ready, which wasn’t a problem at all but we were given complimentary prawn crackers as an apology which was a nice touch. The food itself was stunning. We had opted for a mixture of the Street Food dishes which were all beautifully arranged and tasted even better with a range of different flavours to enjoy. Personally, I particular liked the Salt & Pepper Squid which was seasoned to perfection and the Wok Tossed Pak Choi, a refreshing foil to the spicier dishes we selected. The drinks selection was also good, with a good range of gins and a lovely Saigon lager. The highlight of our visit though was most certainly the service provided by the brilliant Sen staff. They were all so welcoming and attentive. Our waitress (whose name I didn’t catch but she mentioned she was from Newcastle!) was brilliant, explained the dishes wonderfully and was so friendly - I had to inform her that I have a peanut allergy which she dealt with very ably, making me feel completely at ease. There was another waiter who was just as good, making sure that we never had an empty glass. I think the biggest testament to Sen’s quality though wasn’t just our enjoyment, but the fact that everyone else in the restaurant and everyone we saw leaving it seemed to be enjoying it just as much as us. What an absolute pleasure.

One of the best meal experiences in Edinburgh! From the beginning to the end, the service we received was first class. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food, and they kindly explained the dishes to us as they came out. They knew when to approach each table for the next dish, to clear plates, to refill drinks etc. Some of the best customer service I’ve ever received! We ordered a range of street foods and a bowl of pho. Our prawn mousse on sugarcane came with a demonstration from the waiter on how to wrap the rolls ourselves. He wore gloves and a face mask, and guided us through step by step. With the ingredients cut and laid out, it was easy to pick what you wanted to roll up. Delicious and fresh ingredients - prawn mousse, vermicelli noodles, mango, carrot, cucumber, coriander, mint and lettuce. Also provided was a spicy combination of chilli and peanut sauce, and a tangy fish sauce. The rice roll paper came with a tray of water to dip it into to make it soft. The summer rolls were light and fresh with a kick from the chilli peanut sauce. The beef papaya salad was spicy but refreshing and bursting with flavour. It would be a light palate cleanser if you are eating heavier flavours. The pho was amazing! Tasty broth and silky noodles with homemade beef balls, bean sprouts and slices of perfectly cooked beef. So full of flavour and filling too! Only slight downside is that our hour and a half table time went by really quickly and was only just enough time for us to finish our food. I understand the restaurant only holds 6 tables and is in high demand with bookings, so the turnover has to be swift. The tables and seats were cleaned thoroughly between each group. The staff were professional in bringing us the bill after our dishes were cleared, and did not rush us out the door. Prices match the quality of the food and service. Would definitely recommend Sen!

This restaurant got top reviews and so we were surprised that we were underwhelmed. We ordered a fish dish which I didn't realize was fried - that may have been my mistake. It was pleasant but not anything very special. We also ordered a pork belly main dish which was very soupy and yet rice was considered an extra. We needed to ask for rice as well as a plate to serve the rice and pork belly together (we weren't going to dump the rice in the serving bowl, right?) After all that, it did taste good. There were VERY token bits of veggies in each main dish - not exactly what we are used to in a Vietnamese restaurant. They were working hard to provide a"fine dining experience" even as Door Dash drama was occuring at the front door. The two servers were friendly and professional.

From start to finish this was hands down the most amazing Vietnamese dinning we have experienced. The staff were fabulous and the chef herself was incredibly attentive coming front of house to the intimate dining area to see how we enjoyed the food. My boyfriend and myself are such foodies and after looking up the reviews of this previously, SEN did not disappoint. A great value for money with more than sufficient portion sizes. The dishes are fresh, full of authentic flavours and have memorable tastes and textures. I do believe they change their menu every 6 months or so, Im gutted we dont live local to keep going back to discover new dishes. It will definitely be on our list for when we revisit Edinburgh. At the point of visiting SEN had only been open for 4 months or so. I really hope they achieve the success they deserve and are awarded some form of recognition from the food and hospitality industry because they really were faultless. #welcometheacolades

Cosy, warm, fresh and welcoming restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh. As we were new to Vietnamese food, the staff talked us through the menu and even offered some of their personal choices. The chef also came out on a few occasions and was happy to have a chat with us which we felt was such a personal touch. The prices were reasonable and the food was fresh and very tasty. For me, SEN should be on every local or tourists list of places to go to in Edinburgh.

After hearing good reviews and being enticed by the menu, I wanted to give this place a try. I arranged and made a booking for 10 people for a birthday dinner party. Reservation online was quick and efficient and staff were responsive to emails. The only issue we experienced was that our reservation was delayed. This was due to another table not leaving in time, at no fault of the staff. Unfortunately, my group were stuck outside in the cold for a good 10-15 minutes before the table was cleared. I don't know if diners are given a minimum dining time, but it would have been useful for such a system to have been implemented for such a small restaurant. It was not a good first impression for my group to be waiting outside. Fortunately, when the table was cleared, the staff acted quick to set our table and seat us. Our dining experience greatly improved once seated. The decor was lovely and made the very small restaurant feel extremely spacious and airey. We especially loved the lanterns on the ceiling. My starter was the chick nest and it was amazing! I absolutely adored the prawn cracker nest which adorned the delicious sweet buttermilk flavored chiken. It was both delicious and fantastically presented. The Lantern Duck Curry was an absolutely delectable main course! The duck was on the bone and it was so tender that it fell off just with a simple tap with the cutlery. I had chè for dessert; it was lovely and my first time trying this Vietnamese classic! The drinks were nice especially the tea which was presented in absolutely lovely pots and cups. We also enjoyed the lotus crisps which were offered aswell. The staff were also good and attentive. The bill was a bit on the pricey side but we had a lovely meal and it was worth the cost. Apart from a delay clearing the table, we had a lovely meal here and would highly recommend this establishment.

The interior and staff were lovely but overall the entire experience was not good at all. We started with lotus root crisps which weren’t very exciting. Our starters were vegetable spring rolls and summer rolls. The spring rolls were similar to what you’d would get in a Chinese takeaway with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. The summer rolls were pretty bland and came with a peanut dipping sauce. For mains we had a lantern vegetable curry. The broth was underwhelming and the quality and cooking of the veg was poor. It was £14 excluding rice. My main was shaken beef on a bed of mash. I thought it would interesting fusion at £18 but it was essentially beef and black bean sauce on top of a pile of mashed potato. The beef was well cooked but the dish was really bizarre. We had a bottle of white wine at £25. Total bill £80. I don’t usually make a point of the price but it was so expensive for what it was. We really wanted to like the place as we love Vietnamese food but it wasn’t enjoyable.

Fantastic meal. The food is of a extremely high quality, a great reminder of Vietnamese food for anyone who has been there and a great introduction to anyone who hasn’t. The service is really good and best I’ve experienced for a while, great to see and chef and team who all care about the menu and food they are serving. Would recommend booking as the restaurant is small but still a lovely atmosphere.

My granddaughter and I were at Sen last night for dinner. This was our first time and it certainly wont be our last. I have NEVER tasted food like this before. Each mouthful was an absolute explosion of different flavours. We had a crispy chicken and a squid starter. Both were amazing. I don't even like squid and I ate the most. Next was duck in curry and a salty chicken with egg fried rice which I could not get enough of especially the salty sesame chicken. Ice cream to follow which was more than amply proportioned. The lady who owned it came over to me and said she knew me and to my surprise I also knew her which was a true delight. She gave us a pot of their special tea in the most beautiful teapot and little cups - delicious. To say that we over indulged was an understatement. We left the restaurant, which only seats around 12 people full and satisfied. This will be a regular of ours and I'm sure it will be yours too once you have dined there. Thank you to all at Sen and I wish you every success.

Went with high expectations after reading reviews and were disappointed on most fronts. Positives first….the staff were lovely. Now on to the negatives - All the Vietnamese food I have eaten has been very fresh with zingy flavours. Sadly our food was not like this. Two of us started with the summer rolls….very bland - saved slightly by a flavoursome sauce on the side. The other starter was fishcake which was ‘ok’. All 3 main courses were disappointing. Chicken Pho lacked flavour. Crispy sea bass was served in a very gloopy sauce and the fish was over cooked. Lastly chilli and lemongrass chicken also served in a gloopy sauce and not as expected. All of this was disappointing but the main issue was the fact that Sen have a thriving takeaway business and there were a steady flow of JustEat drivers picking up orders, leaving the door open and letting freezing air into the very small restaurant. Even if it had been a warm summer’s evening this would have been annoying. It’s the constant distraction of activity right beside your table. With such a tiny restaurant, Sen need to decide if they want to be a restaurant or a takeaway joint. They can’t be both. They also have a mountain to climb to improve their food offering. Saboteur has better food at lower price.

Lovely little family run restaurant, with great food, excellent service in a nice area. We had grilled prawn mousse on sugar cane, which was superb. The waitress was kind enough to show us how to combine the ingredients and how to roll them too! The Pho is amazing, it had me reminiscing about eating Pho on the streets of Hanoi! You can really tell there is a lot of love goes in to the broth, and the beef meatballs were really good. Lots of fresh flavours. We will be visiting again!

Enjoyable experience with Vietnamese flair. The spring rolls were the best I’ve had and all dishes were delicious. I would say the lamb dish was the star, but the pork belly was also very good Excellent and attentive service A little pricey, but I’d say worth it

We ordered takeaway from here last night and were very pleasantly surprised. Really good food, both the veggie options and the meat. The chicken and pork spring rolls were exceptional. Very glad to have found it and will definitely order takeaway again and look forward to dining in very soon. It’s not the cheapest, but the price reflects the quality of the food

Feel very lucky to have eaten here twice this week for lunch. Beautiful restaurant with the friendliest welcome and service. Food totally delicious. Great to have a mix of small plates and main dishes to share with friends. Do try the blossom cookies - very moreish and it’s obligatory to have a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk to finish! Can’t wait to come back, just wish I lived in Edinburgh!

Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
