You could easily miss the door to Fredericks but it's worth taking the stairs up to the first floor for a break from the bustle below. We've been a few times now, usually just for tea or coffee; this time it was a chai latte and an iced latte, both very pleasant, particularly combined with a slice of indulgent sponge... More

Came here for a lunch with my sister never having been and was very happy! The service was quick and the food was delicious especially the potato salad on the side of my sandwich! Though wouldn't mind a few more options for lunch, it was very limited but I loved my chicken sandwich all the same!

We went for a coffee/tea mid-afternoon on a Sat. It was fairly busy and while there was a "please wait to be seated" sign we ended up finding a spot ourselves. Food menu was pretty wide-ranging: Belgian waffles and tea was very good. The staff kept mixing up our order with the table next to us which was a bit... More

Coffe and platters. The 3 of us had a lovely time sharing 2 different platters. Very amicable place with attentive service. The Rioja wine was good. View over Fredricks street.

Upstairs in Frederick Street this café offers relaxed comfort. We have been several times and intend to return! The service is friendly, the place warm and comfortable and not too large - space can be a problem though as it is popular. Food is excellent and the cakes are wonderful. Sharing platters with a glass of wine are recommended. Used... More

This quaint little cafe is situated on the second floor so makes a perfect spot for a coffee and some people watching. I had the poached eggs which were cooked to perfection and my boyfriend had the floury breakfast bap which is thought was exceptional. We also had the fresh handmade fruit scones.......DIVINE.....some of the best scones we have ever... More

I would give Frederick's 5 stars for comfort, decor and scones. It's a wonderful place to take a break from shopping in a sunny, airy room or in the cosy, comfy back room. The scones are delicious: better than anywhere else in town. Good range of teas, good (but not excellent) coffee, tasty lunches. Drawbacks are that service, although very... More

This coffee house is up a flight of stairs so you need to look for the entrance on Frederick Street - they do have a billboard on the street but there are so many pieces of street furniture I think people often don't see them! The coffee house is a cosy size and comfortable. There are seats by the window... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
