Lunch in this bar is excellent. Not a menu filled with the usual pub fare but some delicious home cooked things instead. The liver and onions was to die for and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the sausage casserole. Simple heart warming food in what we considered to be generous portions. Most in the party were too full for desert but I made a pig of myself by ordering the sticky toffee pudding and it too was made on the premises.
Apart from the food the staff and drinks were great making this somewhere I'll definitely be returning to.

A few days ago we met our friends at the Bailie Bar for a late lunch. It was good for us as it is dog friendly. We had a cosy seat in the corner near the coal fire. The beer is good and so is the food. I had an excellent steak and our friends had fish and chips. My steak was very good, and I ate it up with enthusiasm. My only complained not mentioned at the time was that it came on a wooden board and I don’t think it can be very hygienic with the wood tending to absorb juices etc and being hard to clean properly. I would suggest anyone going there should ensure that their food comes on a plate! I will remember that next time as I think we will go again.

Myself and my partner came to the Bailie Bar as we were meeting a family member who lives in Edinburgh. Coming here enabled us to be able to go to a local pub for a dinner away from the hustle and bustle of the other areas with tourists. The menu was full of home made pub favourites making it difficult to make a decision! The portions were very generous, so much so that I couldn't eat all of mine. I had the deluxe burger off of the specials menu which I will upload a photo of as I cannot explain how big it was!
Only negative for me was that we were sat by the TV which was playing a football match so when the game started, the waitress put the volume up really high and then when goals were scored the fans around us were pretty loud! I think we could have maybe been sat a little further away it may have been a bit better.
The prices were mid-range but like I said the portions were huge!

My partner and I gave the Bailie a visit due to our usual pub not serving food on a Monday. We ordered the Cajun Chicken and the Steak Ciabatta sandwhiches as we have had them before and they were nice and we also decided to do half and half. I ate the steak one which I thought was pretty tough and tasteless , most of it ended up in my napkin as I could now eat it, the chewing became tiresome. Came to the chicken and oh my god it was tougher than a groin guard. I couldn't eat it but my partner did as he'd eat anything he was paying for. The chips could have done with at least 5 minutes longer. The coleslaw was nice. The service was fast and the server was polite. Though he did ask me how everything was at the end and I said it could have been better as the chiken was very dry, but that just went over his head.
I have been to the Bailie a few times over the years and its been fine, but lastnight I decided I won't go back for food. Very disappointed.

The fish stinks, it’s clearly old fish. Had to leave half way through the meal in fear of being sick inside the place.
The staff tends to themselves and their regulars , rather than actually working a bar job.
Genuinely, terrible food that can be cooked at home with a much better end result.
Ps … if you are a “chef” as they claim (totally a below average cook) then I would recommend not walking through the restaurant every 20 minutes to go for a fag. You can smell the cigarettes off their gingers in the food.
Badly managed place with very questionable people inside.

I Cannot praise this bar and the staff enough!
We were welcomed from the moment we stepped in the door, being Welsh, we had lots of chat with the lovely locals, and made some great conversation sat around the bar. It's very diverse with English and Irish too. The first time we visited over the weekend we had a lovely meal after a long hard drive up! Just what we needed, hearty tasty food that arrived really fast and was very reasonable!
After a couple of days being in Edinburgh and after the Scotch Experience during the day, we decided to pay another visit for some Cheesy chips, and what we thought would be a few small drinks before heading out. Well, After chatting to the bar staff about our tour, we were shown a whiskey menu with all the different regions, and we just had to sample a few more. Roll on three hours later, and we have had the best evening ever! We ticked off a lot of whiskeys with the help of lovely Struan and Natalia! The hospitality was second to none and the Whiskey was just as delicious!
The atmosphere is cosy and the staff are so welcoming that we just didn't want the night to end!
We hope to be back for Christmas to tick off the rest of that Whiskey menu :)

Friendly pub with amazing food, staff and live music. We were a group of Welsh ladies who felt truly spoilt on the 2 occasions we visited. Food was of a high standard and plentiful, drinks topped up regularly.

This is actually my 7th time coming to the Bailie Bar, so that says something. My parents, who don't live in Edinburgh, come every time they pay a visit. We were there yesterday. The dishes are tasty and enormous. We had several dishes: the Bailie burger, a Deluxe burger (from the daily specials), a rump steak and Haggis, neeps and tatties. Everything was delicious and nothing could be faulted. Also shared the Oreo cheesecake and a Sticky toffee pudding.
Thank you so much for having us, and a special thanks to Natalia, for being such a great waitress!
We will be back soon

What a wonderful and authentic pub in Edinburgh. If you’re looking for a discret, charming, timeless place to spend the evening, like the ones movies bring into your imagination, you won’t be disapointed at all with the Bailie, in Stockbridge. Just go down the stairs to the basement where a confidential door-window will open to a marvelous circle counter, which is a magic view ! Inside, drafts, beers, spritits and affordable meals will enchant you for your entire evening. What ever if you are local, foreigner, there is no bareer in there. Just the pleasure from the waiters to assure you a very good time to live, into a warm and traditionnal place, reliable to popular UK literrature & music. Perfect as well to enjoy sports events in a great atmosphere!

Omg, I can't believe how much this place has changed from the unfriendly arrival to the food. I've been coming to this place every time I come home with all my family for years. Maybe 6 times a year, we always had a really friendly welcome from the old manager, and the food was fantastic. What a different experience this time the new manager was so unfriendly and not at all welcoming and the food has gone downhill. We always have the fish and chips. The fish was overcooked, and the batter you could snap in half and what restaurant service french fries with fish and chips. ( MAYBE MCDONALD'S). Will not be returning, unfortunately.

We liked this place from our very first visit a few years ago and try to get in when we are up from The Borders. On our last visit, a few weeks ago, we were taken by how efficient and helpful a reception we got, and the prompt and friendly service. The star turn was, however, the Cream of Haggis soup. We had ordered excellent Ciabatta bread sandwiches, but I had noticed the soup on the menu and, after consulting with the waiter, decided to give it a go - and was very impressed. To be fair, the waiter was quite honest that it was not his thing, but conceded that customers are raving about it, and we join that company. Thanks Guys !!

Great bar, reminiscent of 'Cheers" for those who remember the TV programme. Dugs can sit in the bar area and you can eat there, or if you are dug-less, there's a restaurant area too. Popular with the locals, especially in winter when there's a roaring fire.

Have always loved The Bailie, but I had never eaten there before last night. I was very disappointed with the Cajun Chicken as it arrived burnt to a cinder, black and tough as old boots. The chef should be ashamed serving that up. This experience won't put me off The Bailie, cos it's a great pub, but I will not eat there again. Oh, and BTW, no apology or discount /refund.

Visited the Bailie twice in our week in Edinburgh, its a lovely, proper pub. The staff are all very friendly, there's a good atmosphere, a good range of drinks and some cracking food. We ate each visit, and both times the food was absolutely delicious, we just wish we'd had a few more nights so we could have gone back for more! I will give a special mention for the rump steak, which was the best steak I've had in a very long time. Cooked to perfection, juicy, full of flavour, absolutely spot on.
Next time we're back in Stockbridge, this will be our first port of call.

Sarah Jane is undoubtedly the epitome of local hospitality in pretty much the best local ever. Always with a smile and warm welcome she delivers hospitality perfection. A kiss from a rose on Valentine’s Day made it a night to remember.

New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
