The Newsroom restaurant garners appreciation for its welcoming atmosphere, often described as comfortable with a nice interior and delightful accents. Service typically receives high marks for attentiveness, although it can falter during peak hours. While the food elicits a range of reactions, from tasty to lackluster, the value proposition is also a point of contention, with some menu items considered reasonably priced and others seen as a bit steep.

Booked a table and turned up on Saturday night, unfortunately the curry and fish were off but the burger and scampi which came more than made up for it. I had the fajitas, first time ordered them in a restaurant, OMG, they were just like I make them at home albeit a wee bit spicier but the food was amazing. Followed our mains up with a shared waffle dessert which hit the spot and topped off with a glass of wine and the best waiter who was extremely apologetic about the finished food but equally attentive to us. Very reasonable priced and a really interesting bar to sit in and soak up the décor.

We visited this bar/eatery 4 times during our stay in Edinburgh our 1st dinner was about 7ish Monday evening not busy so able to eat without booking our server was a very bright chatty young man who made sure we had everything we needed, we had the haggis mashed potato and neeps this meal was delicious and highly recommend it to visitor’s to Edinburgh we had sticky toffee pudding which we had to take away not as impressed with this seemed more like a muffin with toffee sauce on it. 1st breakfast was the frying Scotsman 7.50 for a very nice Scottish breakfast we ordered 3 teas which on the menu is described as a pot of tea we received a cup of tea 2.00 for a pot of tea is fair 2.00 for a cup of tea is excessive anyway we didn’t know until we got the bill that the cost of a cup of tea was the same as a pot of tea until we got the bill and we had ordered 2nd teas. 2nd dinner was steak and Guinness pie with mash and seasonal veg which was again very nice meal generous servings and we had cheese cake dessert to take away which was very nice. 2nd breakfast was again frying Scotsman another generous serving of delicious Scottish breakfast this time thanks to our lovely lady server we got pots of tea without prompting which gave us two cups of tea for half the price of the day before. We enjoyed the food, it was tasty and well presented we would definitely recommend and even visit again on our next trip, just watch out when you order tea to get the pot they offer on the menu and not the cups we were presented with could save yourselves £6,00 we may have been living in Manchester for 40 odd years but as a true Scot we like to get value for money.

Looking for a spot of lunch we just randomly went in to The Newsroom Bar in passing. Very pleasantly surprised. We loved the food, service and drinks. The dessert course of Deep Fried Mars Bar was top notch, served with ice cream and a caramel & chocolate sauce. So good!! Be back.:)

great place, nice ambiance and staff that actually cares to give you a great time. We were able to sample some dishes between us without funny looks and adviced about our drinks in a nice not demanding way. Enjoyed our stay very much

This was easily the worst pub experience I’ve had in the UK after half a dozen visits. It was during the Fringe, and maybe they had all new staff, but still … Took way too long to get menus for the four of us, we mentioned someone would be joining us, got permission to get another chair when the fifth arrived moments later. Then was told because there was 5 at a table for 4, we could only get drinks and not food … they couldn’t explain why. The late comer left. Veggie burger arrived (no chips) from the Sahara with the dryness of the scirocco winds. All the moisture was put into the tasteless mac and cheese that appeared to not have been drained as it was soup. The warm chicken fajita salad had no lettuce in it (I’m not sure what the menu listed as ingredients), and was like eating some fried onions, chicken, and peppers (maybe?) in a bowl of hot sauce and sour cream. This dish also needed a spoon. I couldn’t detect any cumin, garlic, paprika, oregano or anything but hot (maybe jalapeño juice?). I’d rather sit through 3 bad Fringe plays than 1 meal here.

Hi there, Firstly, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to review The Newsroom. We appreciate all feedback whether positive or constructive. I must admit I am quite confused by your review, I am unsure why you weren't able to get food as a group of five. I think there must have been some kind of misunderstanding for which I sincerely apologise. am saddened to hear that you didn't enjoy your food. It seems that all the food missed the mark, we do checkbacks on each guest to ensure that they are enjoying your food, so this should have been dealt with during your visit, we would have gladly got you something else. I am so sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit with us but I hope you will give us another try next time you are in town. Kind regards Gillie

Came in a little after lunch and was greeted by a very cheerful and friendly gentleman by the name of Bruce who could not be more helpful. I ordered the "beef almighty" burger with onion rings, a meal that could choke a donkey! The burger was rich and full of flavour, and the onion rings were massive, crisp and delicious. I was tempted to try the battered Mars bar for dessert, served with ice cream and walnuts, a winning combination. The batter was light and crispy and somehow the whole dish, seemed quite light, which was a relief after my burger overdose. Finished off with a midnight mai tai cocktail (don't judge me, it was my day off!), which might be the death of me! A very generous and delicious drink, beautifully garnished. Can't wait to go back next time I'm in Edinburgh

I’ve been going to this place for over two years now and I’ve been a bit lax writing a review. But that doesn’t get over the fact, That this is one of the best places in central Edinburgh to have a drink and relax. The bar staff I can’t compliment enough, always friendly and helpful. It says it all that since the time I’ve been going here the turnover of staff has been very low. This bar obviously does something well. Are usually drink Guinness which is always top-notch and the food when I dine there is always of a high standard for the money paid. Thank you to everyone that works there

Good food. Good service. We had the vegetarian breakfast and was feeling ‘picky’. I asked if they can swap a piece of toast for baked beans (in fact I got 2 pcs) and hubby did the same. We were given what we requested by a friendly waitress. Also, the coffee was good!

A group of us booked the Newsroom at the last minute as we were let down by an earlier booking, we were not disappointed. We had a mixture of meals from fish and chips, burgers, fajitas, pie etc and every one was really happy with the quality, taste and portion size. The staff were very friendly and really obliging. The premises were very clean and the ambiance was laid back. Only down side was the price of their beer, I know it is Edinburgh city centre but £6.50 for a pint of Gamma Ray IPA......... However, other than that I would recommend this bar for drinks and food.

Not knowing what we were looking for in a bite to eat and a night out, we stumbled upon the Newsroom and were surprised, the service was fantastic and the staff were very friendly. Food was gorgeous, I would highly recommend the Pulled Pork Nachos. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu and was great to make recommendations. Drinks were good too. A great start to our night out!

So disappointing!!! Went for breakfast me and my 13 year old. Place was empty waitress asked what we would like I ordered a tea and toast as shown on the menu and my daughter asked for sausages. The waitress said ‘in a breakfast bun’ and we asked for just two sausages to this she rolled her eyes and have an expression of disgust. My daughter actually said she’s not very happy. We waited 5minutes and then she came back to our table said under Scotland’s laws we would have to leave as a child couldn’t be in the premises without ordering a full breakfast! We had to leave. Her attitude was very poor and a low level of customer service just felt like because no big breakfasts were ordered this wasn’t good enough. Nice restaurant inside pity about the waitress

Hi 314daphnek, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with your visit. We have a condition on our license, along with a lot of other licensed premises in Edinburgh, that we are only to allow under 18s on the premises for the purpose of a meal. Unfortunately, if the customer is just after snacks or a very small amount of food then we are not allowed to do this. This is a licensing condition that we have no control over but must abide by. I also must say that I was present during your visit, and did overhear the conversation between you and my colleague. I am satisfied that she behaved in a professional manner and that this review is somewhat exaggerated. I hope this response will help you understand that licensed premises have to abide by rules and conditions. Kind regards Gillie

Came across it while looking for another place for lunch and loved the welcoming atmosphere. It is a very busy place however and the staff runs around to serve customers. You can see the speed in which they move and can’t help but thinking that’s great but is it ok for a while shift? Staff is very friendly throughout although they brought us the bill without us having asked for it. That’s the minus point here, to feel rushed... The food is at good standards and more or less average standard and the selection of cocktails and drinks very good. I would come again.

Now, I've not been to this establishment for about 12 years so it was nice to come back! Interior is nice and welcoming, seats comfy etc. I think this place is in a prime location and that's why it's so convenient for people coming in to town off the train. We really enjoyed the pitchers (passionberry fizz is a delight). Weirdly we weren't allowed to order more than one at a time to our table of 4, they advised it was due to the alcohol content? I would of at least thought 1 between 2 would have been acceptable. Food we felt was decidely average. Not bad but it didn't exactly excite our taste buds. Some of the items on the menu are very pricey for what we felt they were but some, very reasonable. We felt we had to chase staff particularly towards the end of our meal. No one came to check if everything was alright with us meals etc and we had to ask for the bill. Maybe because most of us have been in customer service at some point in our lives, we just feel service hasn't been up to the standard we expect. I would come back, just for the pitchers and the convenient location. But would I make it one of my first places to get drinks at? Nope.

Hi Chlo, Thank you for the review. We value all feedback, positive and negative. There must have been a miscommunication regarding our acceptable service of alcohol regarding our licence, and that member of our team was thinking of the safest service of alcohol. I'm sorry to hear your experience was not as enjoyable as you hoped. We aim to provide excellent service all the time. I would like to apologise on behalf of the whole team and hope you will come back and give us another go. Kind regards, Mark.

The Newsroom is a Go-To bar for drinks and a bite to eat. We enjoy the beers they have on offer, their cocktail menu is very good (White Chocolate White Russian and Espresso Martini were thoroughly enjoyed). We have visited before and enjoyed, hence our return. On this occasion we did experience an issue with our food which was very quickly rectified by the staff and their customer service was excellent so this did not ruin our visit and it won't deter us from returning.

Heart attack alert! I honestly didn’t know it was possible to deep fry so much food. We ordered the sharing platter and unfortunately even the garlic bread seemed to have been in the fryer. Nice place and nice atmosphere but please, get rid of the fryer - there are so many other ways to cook good food ☹️

Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
