Not knowing where to eat in Edinburgh before going to the playhouse theatre we just went into the nearest place we could find which was Cosmos. It's a world buffet restaurant, all you can eat type of place which is usually hit and miss quality wise. It was very busy when we arrived due to a couple of large parties but we were seated quickly and had drinks orders taken right away, the standard of food and service was good but some areas of the buffet were slow to be refilled. The Two of us had some Thai, Chinese, Indian, sushi , Italian and some lovely gateaux and ice cream to finish. 1 beer, 1 lge wine and 2 buffet was £27 , good value and all you can eat.

We visited for lunch after lots of people recommending this restaurant but were quite disappointed. Some of the stations were shut off. The rice was hard. Staff were friendly. There seemed to be no bowls at the pudding section at that point so many people eating ice cream from dinner plates. Would not return again, unfortunately. The food that was available was quite nice, particularly the Italian. Maybe dinner options would be better

I’ve never been to a buffet styled restaurant quite like this before. The variety in foods is astonishing, going from Italian styled foods to Chinese. The seafood section was astonishing, with the chef cooking the squid etc right in front of you, with your choice of sauce. I had teriyaki squid, and it’s definitely one of my favourites now. The only issue I would say being that you’re only aloud to be sat for 1 hour 30 minutes (if I remember correctly), but I do understand this will be due to the high volume of customers they attract, as waiting times to be seated could go up to an hour without reservations. All in all great place, would defo recommend!!!

Visited Cosmos for lunch and left feeling underwhelmed from my previous experience here, on our last visit the staff were great service efficient and food excellent. Having ordered drinks i then had to ask a further three times for my order and waited over 20 minutes for them to arrive, the food buffet had empty disshes frequently and the staff seemed overwhelmed by the customers. I did have an excellent Lamb Rogan Josh but felt let down by the quality of some of the other dishes, rice dishes were particularly bland and uninspiring. The Sweets were sparse and the choice very poor.

This place was recommended by someone who was staying at our hotel so on her recommendation we went. What can I say, it was alright, some of the food was lovely but some was not. There certainly was enough choice with over 150 meals but because it was so big and I mean big don't expect a quite romantic meal. All in all for all you can eat on a Saturday night for £15.00 pp its great value for money and you do come out full.

Arrived at 5:25pm for a 5:30 booking for 13. Blowing an absolute gale outside with a snowstorm. We walked into the restaurant and within 30 seconds were ordered to leave as they didn’t open till 5:30. We asked could we wait in the foyer due to the horrific weather conditions and were told no we had to wait outside! Staff were beyond rude and one even shoved past us in his way out. We were booked to see a show at the Playhouse and with 13 of us it was unlikely we would be able to book anywhere else at such short notice. We were let in after 5:30 along with 20 or so other customers who were freezing outside. One of our party went out for some fresh air and were harassed by staff who shouted have you paid, have your paid, even after they had explained that they were with a large party etc. Even when settling g the bill at the end, bar staff pushed past us and were just so rude it was an awful experience.

Was over from Australia visiting friends for Hogmanay, one of whom booked a table for 15 early on NYE. Seated straight away, no waiting in the small queue that had formed outside. Our family have had quite a few experiences with top end buffets in Dubai, Singapore, USA, Australia etc (how we are not all 120+ KG's I'll never know). Cosmo Edinburgh had a great variety of food and everything seemed fresh and hot. Thoroughly enjoyed the Indian selections though the carvery was a bit lacking to be fair with the roast potatoes the flop of the evening. Huge Chinese selection which most was very good. Would definitely revisit when we are next in town and recommend for anyone looking for reasonably price good food 8/10 from me

We went on a Sunday evening the only booking we could get was 8.15pm which was a little late for us however we have been to the Cosmo in Manchester so knew the food would be good and didn’t mind the late dinner. Having been to a Cosmo before we had expectations of the food and staff quality, however we were severely disappointed. The options of food were very limited the Sunday roast consisted of frozen Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes, and meat that was fatty and very low quality, the gravy was like water but had lumps of fat in. Staff took a long while to fill up empty food stations and gave up completely towards the end of our meal, another customer pointed out that there was no pancakes left for the duck but the staff ignored this and said well there is the duck. Deserts were shocking abit of tinned fruit some jelly and ice cream, by the time we got to desert 8.45 there was next to nothing left the cakes, popcorn and marshmallows for the chocolate fountain were all empty, they clearly weren’t thinking of the customers still in the building (which may I add was quite a lot) Very very disappointed won’t be returning and do not recommend to anyone.

Came in for a family member’s birthday, received nothing but kind treatment from the staff. They even prepared a birthday cake and placed candles in the cake. Felt very welcomed and treated nicely. Only thing is, the grill section should stop half cooking the food and go back to making them fresh. Other than that, everything was amazing.

My family and I went to Cosmo for a bite to eat on a Sunday evening. First things first, you can’t fault the service. We booked a table and we’re worried as there was a big queue on arrival. I believe it closes in the afternoon to get cleaned up and prepared for the evening. We didn’t wait long and were treated by a really chatty and friendly member of staff. From then we were shown to our tables and given an overview of how things operate in the current restrictions. They’ve got a one way system so you’re guided around the trays of food on offer. You’re also encouraged to wear masks and gloves so there’s nothing to complain in this aspect. It also feels a lot less chaotic than when we were there a few years ago. The food is lacking slightly. Despite it just opening they were missing some dishes with a long way for them. Also the desert options are limited. There’s four big bowls of sweets for instance that would be more suited to the pick n mix stall at the nearby cinema. It also tasted a bit bland which is disappointing. It’s a shame as the staff were brilliant. If only the food was as good.

Visited Monday evening with high hopes after comparing reviews to other similar establishments. On arrival we were greeted by a very friendly lady who advised us to wait to be seated. During the time we were waiting to be seated 2/3 different workers approached the area we were waiting one of which advised they would be with us in a second which we understood. We waited a further 5 minutes before being seated. Once seated the server quickly took our drinks order and left the table, we were not giving any instructions or asked if we had been before we hadn’t as we were visiting from out of the area. It took the table next to us to inform us to just go for our food. There was hairs on one of the desserts at the dessert are and some dirty spoons. The overall quality of the food was missing and rather poor, the options were limited and the food didn’t feel fresh. Some of the dishes were empty and not refilled during our dining time, the burger was crunchy and inedible. The food was warm at a push and a lot of frozen produce. The only enjoyable part of this experience was the fresh salmon which was cooked in front of you. The desert section wasn’t great the options were there but the quality was very poor. From our prospective we believe this to be because it was close to closing even though we arrived at 19:45 and it didn’t close until 10pm. At 20:30 we were informed that the restaurant would be closing in 30 minutes. 5 minutes after being informed of this out was the vacuum clear hoovering the drinks machine and surrounding areas whilst customers were still eating and trying to use the drinks machines which were being vacuumed. The vacuum made it feel like we had to leave the restaurant as you were to made to feel rushed. We had also purchased refillable drinks so didn’t feel comfortable to attend the refill station during the vacuuming so feel like we could have just ordered a single drink and saved some money. The overall experience of this place was very disappointing and somewhere we wouldn’t recommend to others. The food was very poor and not worth the money we spent to eat at this establishment.

Called in with friends last night and had, once again, a fabulous dinner. Booking in advance is essential at weekends and we had done this a couple of weeks before, so we were shown straight to our table on arrival. Top marks to the serving staff who are always friendly and helpul. The restaurant is big but tastefully decorated and has a great buzz. Most importantly of course is the food and you won't find a better quality or more diverse menu than the one at Cosmo's. Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian etc the dishes are very fresh and full of flavour and everything is spotlessly clean. Give it a try and see if you can find a better world banquet anywhere for the money. Just amazing and I can't wait for the next time I visit.

Saw some negative reviews since the beginning of 2020 and must confess that we had some holdbacks to try it due to this but we decided to give it a try after eating also at China Red and couldn't be more happier. We ate at lunch and the food was very, very, very fresh and delicious while the staff was very nice. There are a lot of varieties to choose from and its one of the best all you can eat buffets we ate at during all our trips. Would definitely recommend it.

Half the dishes suggested on the website were not there, large areas of the place were empty, there was a limited amount of food except Indian and Chinese. There were no european taster dishes such as mini burgers, mousaka etc. Quality was poor. The service was terrible, the best part was the chocolate fountain but even then half the other desserts were missing. Drinks are refilable which is a plus. Would not go again.

We visited here following a musical at the Play House. On arrival (Sunday) we hadn’t booked but was given a buzzer to come back in 40mins. The place was very busy, very reasonably priced and great dining to experience new foods etc, kids will love it. Huge selection and there will be something there to suit every ones taste 😊👍🏻

Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
