We picked this one up from Trip Advisor as being close to the hotel. It was a whole lot more than just convenient! The food was superb, and the vibe of the place was great. Even though the place was full when we got there...More

Such a simple idea but works great. We loved it so much we went back the next 2 days. The food was perfect every time. I particularly liked the gamon with honey glaze, my bf loved the smokey chargrilled sausage. The mash as expected was...More

Our one and only day in Scotland and we were looking for some good Scottish fare. We loved everything. We decided to get the haggis and skins since we had never had haggis before and it was delicious. We decided to get the bangers and...More

It’s delicious, simple idea but so much love goes into the flavour. We had the small haggis and the skins with haggis as a starter, wow good portions. Then lamb shank with the cheese mash and boar sausage with mustard mash. Complimented by good drinks...More

Great food & good service. Simple and tasty - Sunday lunch at mum’s kind of stuff. Nice simple menu with a ‘just right’ selection of food, wine, whisky & desert.

Beautiful traditional Scottish meal. The Haggis is especially good. Fair pricing and good selection of meals and wine. Also, great service from our waitress Louise!!

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

Yes we do an olive oil mash which is great. The vegitarian dishes can be changed to be vegan. Yours John
John , I appreciate your response ( Disappointing !). We were there approximately 1:30 ish pm on Tues March 13. We had concluded a tour of the castle and were looking forward to lunch at Makar's . The restaurant was not busy , and possibly we had arrived after a large lunch rush and the two staff were trying to decompress , not sure . We were a party of 5 with a 2yr old toddler. Our daughter , who resides in Europe had meticulously put together the week's itinerary , to allow us to re-connect with our Scottish roots. Your restaurant was marked as a "must visit" while in Edinburgh. As indicated in the review , we are probably the most low maintenance people you will meet , and honestly upon seeing the signage ( 5 pound bonus) looked for any reason to provide a positive review , if only for the servers to receive the bonus. Upon exiting the establishment , remarked to my wife how inadequate the service appeared , and should not be generalized to include the chefs and farmers ! She agreed. I will mark it down as an unfortunate circumstance .

Ok thank you, I will follow up the visit time on cctv camera today. These type of reviews cost us £1000s in lost revenue so I need to take a robust approach to mitigating damage. If somebody has acted as you say then they do... More

"Makars is becoming an Edinburgh institution, a rare true independent operator that promotes local artisan producers and ethical behaviour. Makar’s food has been described as “an Edinburgh gem”, “a local culinary hero” and “simply the best in Edinburgh”. Makars receives rave reviews and many of our guests come back time and time again. If you are struggling to get a seat at our busy Makars Mound site we have a much larger Makars WEST END restaurant that has exactly the same great food and team. It is not usually as busy and has a more relaxed atmosphere. It is about an 8 minute walk from the Mound along Princes Street. Our food ranges from slow cooked meats, char grilled sausages/poultry, (all in rich special sauces), to lunch time rapid lighter/tighter options through to a well received range of vegetarian and GF dishes. We use the finest potatoes for our mash, rostis and skins all served with fresh local vegetables garnishes and salads.
