We visited on a very busy night. Despite this they were able to accommodate us reasonably quickly and had an excellent meal, with good service. We loved that there were several options which do not feature on standard Indian restaurant menus. My husband's awkward dietary requirements were also well catered for.

The food was good but what stood out from our visit was the fantastic service! The gentleman serving us was incredibly polite and efficient. Would certainly recommend!

We went with some friends for a meal, and were absolutely delighted with the food. You won't find your usual indian take-away fare on the menu, but everything we ordered was lovely. Not very hot-and-spicy, but delicately flavoured. Portions not huge, but more than enough (and make sure you leave room for dessert!). We'll definitely be coming back!

This is a small restaurant with has good food. They catered for my specific needs on top of the pure vegetarian food. the food was of good quality. it could do with being a bit more spicy

I've been once before and didn't enjoy, but this was years ago so decided to try it again and visited with some colleagues. Unfortunately it was as i remembered, bland, uninspiring, small portions of food which I got bored with before even finishing the dish. I don't understand the popularity at all, and won't be back!

Book early to avoid the crush. Great range of veggie dishes. Cold beer. My tip - don't have too much sambar. It always backfires!

Food was good. Bhindi ka sabji was awesome and thank you for that. Paneer item was good and the starters were ok. But the rice we ordered was no way close to Biryani. it was just coloured rice with some frozen vegetables. Disaapointed with the rice otherwise very good veg food. Ambience is great and service is very good. Would... More

As a regular visitor to Kalpna and a regular visitor to India, it is surprising to see some of the negative reviews expressed here. The food is made with huge skill and it is hard to find anything else nearly as good. The service is excellent. The Gujarati mirror work decoration and the atmosphere is very special. It is not... I have ordered a food for collection, quite bigger amount. They were 30 minutes late to provide it, even though I have mentioned that the time is strict. The food was just average, or slightly below average.

This restaurant used to have a fine reputation. Following our visit we won't be returning. The food was bland and not that hot. The rice was the worst I've ever experienced. Even when we complained the next lot was no better. The young waiter was trying too hard and his older colleague didn't hear us when we made a complaint.... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
