Brilliant food and service. We had the big mixed platter for £17.95 and then added the rice pancake and a cauliflower dish.....we were told it was too much but we ate it all up even though we were stuffed....we couldn't leave anything....it was too good. Don't miss it if you are in Edinburgh

We've visited Kalpna for the lunch buffet last week as I've heard a lot of good things about their food. And being vegetarian and not trying out a vegetarian Indian place that's been in Edinburgh for so long seemed unacceptable! The food served on the buffet was very nice and varied, and overall we thought it was a great value... More

We had definitely one of the best vegetarian dinners at Kalpna when visiting at Edinburgh. Service, food, atmosphere = lovely and brilliant. One of those experiences that you remember for decades.

We ate here a few nights ago and were not impressed. The masala dosa didn't taste right, it tasted burnt. The mango lassi was like mango flavouring with yogurt rather than real mango. The thali was just very poor, the sauces did not taste authentic, and poppadums tasted like rancid oil. The restaurant seemed like a place which had seen... More

Good choice of dishes. Not cheap. Not exceptional quality either. Apart from the dosas which were large, the portions were on the small side for around £9 each. All the food was a bit similar, was not hot (chilli hot) and we had to wait a long time to be served. My main issue with the restaurant is that it... More

It's always good to eat at a vegetarian restaurant and know that the whole menu is open to you. On our first trip to Edinburgh we thought this place would be somewhere we would love & we weren't disappointed. The Palak Paneer Dosa was particularly good!

What a great place in town for vegetarians...sometimes its hard to find veggie dishes on any restaurant menu and then there is a place like Kalpna...found a place in Edinburgh where I can dine without any second thought in mind... Guys please try Dosa here. Very famous dish from South part of India Once again thanks to Gaurav and his... More

Out for an evening meal with friends, here for a second time, thoroughly enjoyed it again. Welcoming staff keen to make sure you've got what you need and genuinely enthusiastic about the ingredients and flavours. Good value too.

Fresh ingredients, well-balanced spices, friendly service and nice wine. The portions are large, so be careful not to over order - or take it home in a doggy bag. We went with our teenage daughter (newly veggie) and her cousin. Every dish was delicious. A thoroughly pleasant experience.

Great veggie and vegan menu, pleasant staff and the food is consistently good. So why my rather negative and somewhat inappropriate comment? Well to be honest the place looks a bit tatty and the loos area could do with a general clean up. Then there was a family who struggled to get in the front door with a push chair.... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
