I probably first used this chippy when it opened, been about 30 years since I last used it (only because I don’t stay in Edinburgh now) but it didn’t disappoint, fantastic fish supper, delish pickled onions and tartare sauce too. Fast delivery, piping hot.

Living on past glories. We normally use one of two traditional chip shops north of Edinburgh . Tonight thought we’d revisit here but it was £19.90 for a special fish supper and one special fish. Equivalent four miles away is £12.10 . The fish here...was good but no better and the chip portion was meagre and pretty dry. In hindsight, not surprised how quiet it was this evening.More

I come from a family of fish and chip shops and it is rare for me to find one as good as my late father's. L'Alba D'Oro is always reliable and consistent no matter who is frying. I had a smoked sausage and chips (I...would never order fish anywhere else and in fact I witnessed a fish that only just came out the pan break in half when the server picked it up with the tongs because it obviously needed a few more minutes). Anyway back to my meal...the chips were lovely and crisp, full of flavour and had been in the box just the right amount fo time to be the perfect eating temperature without losing their texture. They weren't greasy, starchy or flabby and certainly no taste of that horrible whitening additive some places put in the water. The smoked sausage was also perfectly cooked with no resemblance of that boiled or microwaved texture you often get! Nice to see the salt go on first before the vinegar without having to ask but I did notice the female server was a bit more haphazard with the S+V than the boy that served me, that will come with time and practice! My only negative was the very slight taste of fat off the chips (I don't want to use the word dirty but the fryer will know what I mean). However, probably unnoticeable to the untrained tastebud. All in all a delightful meal and it took me right back to Dunoon in the 90s.More

I have ben told for the best fish and chips you need to travel to coastal villages/towns like Anstruther or Whitby and the like. I ordered the breaded haddock and chips from L'Alba D'oro and I have to say the quality was second to none....It was outstanding and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you.More

Ordered two haddock and one large chips between my dad and me and at first it seemed like the chip portion was quite small, but actually it was the perfect portion. Fish was moist, delicate and very tasty, chips were perfectly cooked. Definitely one of...the best, if not the best fish and chips we've ever had. Strongly recommend.More

L'Alba D'Oro ( The Golden Dawn? Really?) This place used to be very reliable for great fish and chips. You would think that at peak time on a Friday night, your chances of getting a lovely fresh piece of fish would be quite high? I...ordered fish and chips and was told there would be a 5 minute wait for the fish, which I took as a good sign, as it would be fresh. Less than one minute later, my order was ready. When I opened it up, the haddock was dire. Under the batter, it was a grey, soggy mush. No discernible taste or texture. Really dreadful. Chips were OK and plenty of them but the fish was disgraceful and had clearly been sitting around for ages. When you add to this the generally abrasive and unpleasant attitude of the guy frying the food, then it's a pretty compelling reason to avoid this place. There are much better fish and chip shops in town. Give them your business and not L'Alba D'Oro. (I'm convinced that should translate as 'Cold, miserable morning'...)More

You can get anything when you order and collect ... you don’t see what they put in the box and you get it home snd it’s not the treat you needed! Soggy thin fish... probably not haddock and tiny, thin chips... the remains of the...fry. Aye, they saw me coming and at this time, when we have bern through so much, we need respect snd kindness and not a quick smash and grab.More

Usually ok but last night the fish did not taste like haddock. Tasted like whiting. For the price paid it was not very good but delivery was good

Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling
a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s
small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s
first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s
most desirable, though many bohemian touches have
fallen away as its residents have matured and the area
has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but
mostly residents display refined tastes in basement
