My wife took me here for my birthday, as close friends had been a few months ago. We really looked forward to it and we were not disappointed. The service from the minute we entered was excellent, made to feel very welcome. Great selection of...cocktails, which we did sample. First class. The excellent service continued in the restaurant by the friendly staff. We opted for the a la Carte menu, which was just delicious. Each course was fresh and presented to a very high standard. The experience was just great . We would highly recommend The Kitchin for a special occasion.More

Outstanding food and a wonderful experience! Chef Tom over delivered on his promise of “making his guests forget their troubles at the door and float out after the meal!” The Kitchin provided a proper end to a family pilgrimage to Scotland. Every dish was delightful...and the wine pairings were sensational. The team also delivered a ‘Surprise’ for my father’s 80th birthday! This all culminated in ‘the perfect experience!’ Hats off to Chef Tom, Fabio, Juan, and Carolina for.a truly memorable evening! With my sincere gratitude.More

Visited Edinburgh just to come here for lunch after reading such wonderful reviews. It’s a little away from the city centre but a reasonably priced taxi ride. We had a fabulous dining experience and loved that Tom came round each table to speak to the...guests. Although, it was interesting to note the lack of diversity in the open kitchen, with every chef that we could see being male. It was a lovely touch that we got to know the provenance of all our dishes through the provision of a local map, that also makes a nice keepsake. The Kitchin Ale also proved popular! Overall, well worth the visit.More

I’ve been looking forward to this since my wife enjoyed lunch here a few years ago. For me, it did t quite live up to expectations. The restaurant is nice, the service is good, but the dishes I had lacked flavour. The skill of the...cooking is plainly evident, but the scallops starter was bland, the John Dory was ok, and the chocolate dessert lacked…. chocolate. Having said this, my wife enjoyed all of her dishes, which is why it receives a 4*, as my meal was only a 3 at best. Nice to see Tom come out and have a word with the guests. I just don’t think it is worth the £420 bill for 2 (and we were careful) - some of the wine prices were ridiculous. If you charge top end prices, you expect to be wowed, and I wasn’t.More

The Kitchin is hard to get into - we had to book 2 months in advance - and it’s not cheap, but the experience really makes it worthwhile. We had the surprise tasting menu- which was very well put together with each course perfectly presented...and delightful to eat. My favourite was the halibut fish course while the scallops and the duck also stood out. The accompanying wines were also interesting, some were exceptional. Staff were friendly and attentive and the evening just flew past. Overall the meal took nearly 3 hours but we never felt we were waiting around. The service was just perfectly measured.More

Service was great from the moment we arrived. We had a cocktail in the bar area which was served with a small canapé. In the dining room we ate off the a la carte menu. Between courses we were served an amuse-bouche which we didn’t...expect. The waiter explained in detail on how each course was cooked. The choice was good and every course tasted amazing. I went for the Scallop to start, then the duck and chocolate mousse selection to finish. The prices are quite steep but we knew we were going to a high end Michelin restaurant so was expecting this and the quality of food was very good. It was a special treat. Not somewhere I could go every week (as much as I’d like too).More

A well regarded restaurant in the popular and vibrant Leith district, it appears suitably plush and upmarket, but all the staff were pleasant and friendly and it wasn’t at all formal or stuffy. We were offered drinks whilst we perused the menu, which had three...different options – a la carte, or two “surprise” tasting menus. Generally I’d be quite happy with a surprise tasting menu, but in this case it was difficult to choose between the two since they were both the same number of courses with the only discernible difference being that one used more premium ingredients. Considering there was a £50 price difference between each, we wanted a bit more detail than that, but fortunately this was not an issue and you could peruse the actual menu if you so wished, which was just as well really as we preferred the sound of the cheaper one! Everything we had was really very good, and it’s difficult to pick out any highlights. The beetroot consommé to start could perhaps have done with some actual pieces of beetroot in it, the flavour from the liquid didn’t seem very pronounced and some of the lamb fillet was a little chewy, but other than that it was all excellent. The scallops with a white wine, Vermouth and herb sauce were certainly very good, and a generous portion, and the barbequed John Dory was also very good indeed. A “Millionaire’s” caramel mouse to finish was a suitably decadent end to the meal, and the accompanying wine flight washed it all down very nicely. The wine flight included a glass of champagne to start, and the meal included a hot drink at the end (the menu listed tea or coffee, but they happily made me a chocolate!) although there was only one petit fours included which was a bit of a shame. Surely that should be a petit four? Overall though, very, very good and highly recommended.More

After many years the revitalised "Rockpool" is again a wonderful starter tasting of a shellfish selection in a pool of shellfish consomme. It is worth a visit for this alone. The Kitchin cooking continues to be the epitome of extracting the optimum taste from many...of the less popular ingredients and the current menus have two which we tried. I love the Hogget. I think of it as lamb with attitude. The beauty of lamb with the enhanced flavours of the older animal. My wife ordered the Beef Shin. Often it is viewed as a brilliant flavour but only suitable for Beef consomme. Here all the rich taste of the beef is preserved whilst it is presented with a delicate texture. Both Mains are fine examples of creating fine dining courses from less known ingredients. There are no requirements here for the overwhelming sauces which so often emasculate the principal componet of many dishes elsewhere. All supported by a continuing excellence of service in a friendly, amusing and fun way.More

Always visit this restaurant every time we are in Leith and this is the first time I have left a review..What can you say about this fantastic restaurant...From the minute you arrive at this restaurant you are treated like royalty..The food is absolutely amazing and...the wine list is extensive and full of amazing wines and Champagne..If you are very lucky the main man Tom Kitchin will be working there and fair play to him he comes out and greets everyone of the diners asking them how they are and how they are enjoying the food and he has no problem having a photo taking with you as well..If you have a special birthday or anniversary or any special event then this is the place for you..Had a fantastic pearl anniversary celebration here and many many thanks to Tom and his fantastic staff making it sooo memorable for the wife and iMore

Unfortunately do not recommend. The restaurant is very large and appears relatively classy, but the attitude of the staff markedly detracts from this. We went as a young couple. We could afford to pay for it, but had saved up, expecting it to be an...incredible experience. It was incredible, but for the wrong reasons. The staff were very cold and seemed quite unwelcoming. We were told our choice of wine wasn't correct for the food. The food itself was pretty terrible. Would not recommend. Try Martin Wishart - that was incredible!More

We wanted to love this restaurant, my husband and I visited with a voucher my mum had bought us, as she was a huge Tom Kitchin fan and adored her visit here. Unfortunately, from almost the outset, I felt like I was in the childhood...story, "The Emperor's new clothes". Whether it was due to a quiet Tuesday 2pm lunch seating, the fact we are both vegetarian or that our hopes were high although our expectations weren't, the experience was among the poorest of us eating out. We have never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant and indeed are often disappointed by vegetarian offerings compared to our creations at home that to eat out isn't common for us and perhaps we cannot offer the opinion and insight of others reviews of The Kitchin. But at the least we expect well seasoned, tasty food anywhere and here we were expecting to discover new techniques, innovative flavours and perfect presentation. None of this happened, the menu seemed tired, uninspired and bored, couldn't feel or taste any passion for cooking, even the descriptions given by the waiting staff were delivered as if rehearsed and monotone, perhaps they were embarrassed. The bread made elsewhere was good and the wine enjoyable, although having been lucky enough to stay in Valpolicella area last year, we had tasted and bought very similar quality wine from a winemaker, for around 15 euros so the markup to seventy pounds seemed steep. Even with the staff, we didn't get the buzz that others have experienced and felt that once we failed to deliver on effusive praise they lost interest or again due to the partially filled dining room and the evening service looming they were just ready for a break. When I was unable to eat my main as it was oversalted, they did whisk it away and had it remade, but too soon for me to explain that it was the ricotta filling, not the butter dressing, I felt as if there was a judgement on me rather than an interest in how the dish could be improved. Overall, our experience was flat and increasingly disappointing so that by the end we were quite annoyed and irritated and that was before the £210 bill.More
