Very nice place. The waiter who served us was very friendly. It is a bar-restaurant near our hotel and we read good references. The food was well prepared. I ate a very tender and juicy beef steak, my daughters had pasta and my wife had a very well-made sausage.

Birthday meal last night early evening, four of us plus my dog (provided her own water bowl and treated like any human customer!). The others all had a variation on burgers which all received high, and my steak was rendered really nicely and our waiter was able to adapt my desire not to have chips, offering boiled potatoes and a complimentary peppercorn sauce (for the extra wait on the potatoes) instead. As it was early we were one of the few diners to begin with, but nearing the end it was picking up a little and the atmosphere was friendly. Service was great - will definitely visit again.

Booked for Brunch on a Sunday for 4 of us. The menu catered for all our tastes; ‘pancakes, bacon & syrup’, ‘filled rolls’, ‘crushed avocado, toast & scrambled eggs with halloumi’ & plenty of coffee! Food was pretty tasty, portion sizes were good & prices very reasonable. Atmosphere was lacking as it is a big place, it was fairly early & COVID-19 will have kept many potential customers at home! Our waiter Johnny was great, very attentive & fun too. Would definitely go back again for another brunch.

Spotted this place on the way to our apartment and thought we would give it a try. Very pleased that we did. The burgers that we had looked hand made, tasted of good quality meat and were cooked very well. For some reason, they have a 2 for 1 offer on burgers on a Monday despite being very reasonably priced anyway (as was the rest of the menu). My daughter (aged 6) was very pleased with the kids' menu, which seems to have been devised by somebody who knows children. The beer selection was a bit limited, but there was a good choice of whiskies. The person who served us (I forgot to ask her name, but she had a good selection of tattoos) asked what I liked and suggested a Balvennie 14yo, which was really nice). I just wish we lived a bit closer as I would happily go back.

Pranked..Scammed in this place, not worth trying.

My experience was very disappointing, I feel absolutely embarrassed and scammed. Reserved a table and invited a few friends everyone was drinking. By the time that I ordered the food, out comes the surprise… ‘Steak Frites’. One small piece of steak, the size of my finger. Completely embarrassing, never coming back. Feels like they took advantage of the title on the menu. £18 for that. When I ordered I asked the meat to be medium. I tried the steak and it was burnt on the outside and rare on the inside. As someone that works in a steak house, the quality of the meat is not good quality and now I think the chef is not good, too. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t complain. Absolutely shocking! Run away from that place, especially their food! Horrible.

Working lunch

Nipped in here to use some WiFi and have a coffee between meetings. I just ordered a filter coffee and sandwich, the sandwich was really tasty with a great fresh side salad for a good price. Whoever was looking after the kitchen that day takes pride in their work even with small orders. Will be stopping in again for working refreshments (and WiFi).

Great place for a bite and a beer with friends after the rugby

Really impressed with the Caley Sample room this afternoon. Great that they take online bookings, especially for days like today when the rugby is on nearby. I booked online early afternoon and still managed to get a table which was great. Arrived to find the table clearly marked as reserved with my name on it which was great. Another plus is it’s a dog friendly venue so our pooch Daisy could join the fun! Food was tasty and plentiful and it’s great that they bring it to the table - the bar was super busy and waiters did a sterling job! Will definitely come here again!

Good drink, good food, and good atmosphere. Its a lovely wee place for a drink or lunch with friends and all reasonably priced too which I think we can all agree is getting harder and harder to find these days. Got to try their trial of the new roast and the beef was rare just how I like it and with loads of sides including an especially tasty cauliflower cheese. They have a good selection of whisky too if that's your sort of thing

Very dog friendly

We went there for an Easter lunch, with our dogs. There was a table of 5 of us and the waitress was really welcoming and friendly. I had the fish and chips and the food was amazing. 3 of us had the steak and one of us found it a bit chewy but the other two really liked it. It was such a lovely atmosphere. The music was great too. Thanks for a lovely visit. Will be back

I wanted a dog friendly and family friendly venue

I wanted a dog friendly venue so booked in advance on website and mentioned we were bringing our dog - I got a lovely personal reply to see they were looking forward to seeing us. When we arrived the COVID safe requirements were clearly explained and it was very well organised. The menu was varied and there was a specials board too. Socks was fussed over and served with a bowl of water and a bowl of sausages - so lovely!! We chose bread with olives & hummus and chicken skewers to start. The olives were in a bowl with small pieces of citrus fruits and slices of garlic, the hummus was amazing and the chicken skewers were so delicious with salad and balsamic dressing. We then had seafood tagliatelle in a lobster sauce and a cheese burgers with slaw and fries - all lovely!! Great selection of beers/ales and sports on TVs. Special mention to the staff who couldn’t have been more polite and helpful. I would highly recommend this bar for dogs and families as so safe at this time! Thanks!!!!

Excellent, dog friendly gastro pub

Edinburgh was pretty busy with the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme but managed to book a table for 4 plus dog at the Caley Sample Room, at short notice. Met by very friendly staff. Great Covid precautions in place. Really friendly atmosphere. Excellent menu, good set menu and dishes of the day. We all went off the regular menu. Staff explained the specials well. Food was absolutely superb, great portions. We had the mushroom risotto, Balmoral chicken and the black pudding, bacon and potato salad, they kindly swapped the black pudding for chicken. Can’t recommend the food more highly. Only problem was we had no room for desserts, which looked equally good. Next time. Such a friendly, welcoming place, staff were so nice, will visit again. Thank you.

This place was absolutely pinned by 10.30 on the final day of the Autumn Internationals, but super efficient staff sorted the crowds out with excellent breakfasts and great beers. After a win for Scotland over Japan, we headed back to watch more rugby and have a meal. Great shout! Atmosphere was fab again (with a bagpiper!) and food and service top notch. So- not difficult to make the decision to head back for brunch on the Sunday, and have my flat white needs more than adequately met! Thanks to Neil and all the staff who worked so hard, with good humour, to help us all have a cracking weekend!

Terrible service and rude staff

Its a nice environment but with very disorganised and rude staff. Out for drinks with friends we were shown to an available table by a member of staff (and told it was free without restriction) only to be told about an hour later by a different member of staff that someone had just booked the table and therefore we needed to vacate it. Noone was interested to listen to the fact that this was awful customer service. staff were rude and had no interest in customer experience or service. really bad experience. avoid.

Hi Mark, we have been expecting some form of contact from you, and are not surprised you've posted this entirely inaccurate account of your visit. As you know, the table you sat at was reserved, it was Hogmanay, we had hundreds of pre booked customers booked in, every table was reserved, however we allowed you to use that table until such time as the booking arrived, instead, you embarrassed yourself and your friends by continually removing reserved signs and were asbusive to multiple members of our staff, you were given several pre warnings verbally 50 minutes prior to the booking arriving. Eventually, after witnessing you being rude to our waitress, I intervened and spoke to you outside asking you to leave. You threatened to "talk to the boss". Your friends were very apologetic for your behaviour, not expected from a grown man. Alas, we find ourselves here, and you have not been able to move past this, no doubt starting your year as you ended the last one... I do hope things improve for you, and that you can improve your social and interpersonal skills in 2023. All the best.

A brilliant bar and restaurant

The Caley is always a classic to come back to when visiting Edinburgh. The food is really tasty, there is an enormous variety of drinks to choose from and the staff are super friendly. One of my favorite places to dine and have drinks at when in Edi.

Best pub

Great day before and again after the football today! We've been most match days and The Caley is always consistent in what it does best which is Fast service and good food. I am disabled and the set up works well for me on match days as most other places I just cant access the toilets let alone bar.
