We enjoyed our visit to this quaint little pub while staying in the West End of Edinburgh. My friend and I both had a delicious steak and ale pie. The alcoholic specialty is gin but there were lots of other choices. I had a wonderful...cider and my friend had a beer. Altogether a great place to stop for a bite.More
Delightful atmosphere, food and service. Really excellent experience. The food was creative, delicious and fun! The four of us think that it was perhaps the best food we had on our trip to Scotland! We went back for a second time. Thanks Jolly Botanist!
Visited on a Saturday for late lunch. There was seating outside however we sat indoors as rain was looming. I am glad we did as it poured down just after we arrived. There is an amazing selection of gin. Love that the menu gives you...details of what tonic and garnish are served with each gin. Menu was smaller than other places but still plenty to choose from. We shared the salt and pepper squid and tempura prawns to start with. Both nice but did think a bit expensive for what it was at £11 each. Hubby had chicken balmoral and I had a steak baguette. Both were delicious and £19 for main course not bad. Drinks were 2 non alcoholic beer and 2 G&t, 2 coffees. Bill was £94 with service charge. Service was friendly and toilets lovely. Will return again to try out more gins.More
Came here for a drink after a meal out in Edinburgh with the fam! Doormen were brilliant, bar staff were excellent and very on it.. quick service and a brilliant atmosphere .. a fab Friday night venue!
I visited here for drinks with some guys I play football with. It was my first visit and it was an enjoyable one. There was a nice vibe in the bar and the company was good. The one down side is that the choice of...draught beer was a bit limited. Other than that it was an enjoyable experience and I'd visit again.More
Food was nice and the staff were very helpful. I felt they were a tad understaffed so there was a wait for food and drinks but overall a nice meal and I would return.
Visited on recommendation from friends. Not disappointed but a bit on the expensive side, spent £40 on four cocktails. Long list of cocktails with details on the menu card. It is table service which is quite surprising but this way you don't have to go...to the bar to order and pay. Very rusty looking décor, very friendly staff and not noisy like many bars in the evenings.More
Good bar with plenty of choice for drinks. Handy for the city centre or the Haymarket. Service was good and atmosphere friendly.
Incredibly poor, whilst the food was great I was given 25 minutes to eat it and leave the table. If I was informed of this I would have ate elsewhere. It’s not fast food, the cost of a pie and chips and 2 pints was...£33 so it’s not exactly McDs. I finished my food and had half a drink left and was presented with the bill, then had a card machine pushed in my direction then asked to move for a quick turn around. What that says is quite clearly the next customer is more important than the current one. Whilst I can’t stress enough the food was great, guys behind the bar were great but the girl that didn’t even have the courtesy to allow me to finish a half pint was just so rude. Worst thing is they take a 10% service charge automatically and in hind sight I would be having that taken off. Never experienced anything like it. They would have been as well holding my plate while I ate at the door so they could get me out quicker. Possibly the worst dining experience everMore
Attracted by the novel exterior we were welcomed in and found a table. Surprised by the quaint interior and auld style decoration, we were pleased to see such a diverse menu. We left after 3 wonderful courses and a bottle of excellent wine, vowing to...return but never did. Any revisit to Edinburgh would not be the same without a return to the Jolly Botanist.More
I rarely write reviews but I feel like this place could be better if they just thought it through a bit. On the face of it, the bar is really cool with a rustic, trendy decor with lots of space and the staff were lovely...and helpful. However the menu is very limited with only one vegetarian main course. However if you liked beef, you’re in luck! There was Beef & Ale pie, the Roast Beef Sunday Lunch, there was a Beef burger or the special was a Steak! I wouldn’t mind that so much except it’s easy to increase vegetarian options, without changing a menu, with the simple addition of vegetarian sausages. This could add a veg roast & veg bangers & mash to the choice without any change to the current menu. I ended up ordering the roast, without the beef, and adding the veg haggis croquettes off the tapas menu. (Another option they could easily offer) It was okay but ended up being very expensive £22! They also didn’t offer a tea selection, just regular tea. Overall the experience was disappointing because it would be so easy to fix.More
Delicious food! Lovely 'tapas' with nice flavors. Simple and honest food for a good price. We will definitely go there again when we come back next week!
On my final day of being in Edinburgh I wanted a really nice Sunday roast. I read about this great hidden gem and wasn’t disappointed. The staff tried to get my roast sorted as quick as could be as I had a train to catch....Annoyed that I didn’t catch their names but the two workers were amazing, attentive and polite. Thank you.More
I've been in Edinburgh for 5 days now and my best meal so far was at The Jolly Botanist. We ordered a bunch of different small plates for the table to share - East Coast fish & chips (fresh battered haddock, chips & peas), Korean...spiced pork belly - kimchi, bok choy, veggie haggis croquettes in a whisky mustard sauce (may have to go back just for these again - yum!), cauliflower wings with a spicy dip, and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Everything was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was phenomenal (I'm so mad I didn't get his name). We told him our usual liquor choices and he picked out gins to suit each of our tastes for us to try. He was spot on! We loved our drinks! We weren't rushed at all even though the restaurant was busy. The restaurant itself was super cute with lots of fun things to look at on the walls and table. I had an all around great dinner. Very happy customer here.More
