I have ordered three takeaways from this restaurant. Every time the food was excellent and delivered within time. Excellent flavours. Not oily. Good portion sizes on mains and rice, but small naan bread, so order one each if hungry. I would recommend this restaurant

It's been a while so I was so pleased to be back for dinner at the Golden Ambal. There's not so many places in Edinburgh doing South Indian food and I love their Dosas which I like to have as a starter. Our main courses were delicious and perfectly spiced, I like a bit extra chilli in mine and they're happy to make it to suit your taste. Very friendly service as always and their Covid restrictions were well done so it felt safe without too much fuss. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in the city.

Having plumped for this restaurant as it is close to where we are staying we were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of the food. Delicious well cooked dishes, full of flavour. Some new to us so I gave them a try and wasn’t disappointed. Staff were welcoming yet discreet and helpful . It is clean and toilets were spotless. Excellent value for money.

We had a cauliflower starter, with a main of masala dosa and idly. It was the first time we have had southern indian vegetable dishes and they were very tasty. The service was also good. A good choice for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans.

A little away from the hustle and bustle of the main centre this gem serves real Indian food. Chilli chicken crisp yet moist with a slight home style and flavoursome along with onion pakoda balls, and mini masala dosa to start, followed by a spicy paneer masala, chicken biryani and lamb chetinadu. All dishes full of flavour and ‘real’ Indian style. There are plenty of the normal style anglicised curries here, but if you can, try to pick out the Indian gems. Service was a little slow with some kitchen teething issues, but the food was very much worth the little wait. If this was in the centre it would be packed out night after night however being in a quieter area meant a more relaxed eating experience. Highly recommended for both Indians and Indian food lovers.

Called the restaurant spontaneously after visiting the Fringe and got a table for four immediately! Nice and friendly staff served great food. The food is well spiced and tasty and they have a large variety. Even if your kids don’t like curries or spicy food, no problem. They serve kids menus such as fish&chips, chicken nuggets&chips, etc. They serve a variety of different beers, even Indian draught beer from the tap (Cobra). We can highly recommend the place and really enjoyed the food. Great for families even with younger kids!

Went here on a Tuesday night during a visit to Edinburgh. We were half an hour late for our booking due to the nightmare roadworks in the centre and a taxi driver who dropped us off 10 minute walk away! Staff were great however and it wasn't a problem. We decided to have a collection of starters and mains to share, all of the food was delicious with the Ghee Dosa being one of the best we have had. Lovely food and lovely staff, even ordered us a taxi when we were finished. Only downside was the service was very slow. The couple on the next table also commented on it but said this was very unusual as they go often and it is usually great, so hopefully just a one off issue. Would thoroughly recommend

We stayed in Edinburgh for a night in November with my partners parents. We went out looking for something to eat and stumbled upon the Golden Ambal. Without knowing anything about the place we went in for some food. All I can say is we absolutely landed lucky! They found us a table without any wait and the service was prompt but relaxed. The staff were incredibly friendly and were happy to explain the dishes. As for the food it was quite possibly tye best Indian food we've had. The chilli prawns for starter were amazing! Highly recommended! The mains came promptly and were just as good as the starters! The cost was very good value for money and worked out around £30 per head. That included a couple of drinks and 2 bottles of wine. We would happily return for another meal and highly recommend this place! Already planning a return visit.

My husband, sister-in-law and I visited this restaurant several times and were very pleased with the meals and service. They had lots of great vegan and gluten-free options. We definitely recommend to anyone staying or living in Edinburgh. Shout out to Ahkil for the awesome and friendly service!

I happened to visit this restaurant during May Bank holidays Ordered Indian Thalis - Food quality was pretty average so is the quantity. Did not even find one Indian vegetable in that (evey thing made of Potatoes/ Tomatoes/Cauliflower only as it is very cheap). None of the curries pleased me So taste vs price is not at all worthy.

Incredible value and food. As veggies, we were spoilt for choice with the comprehensive menu. The saag paneer (I forget the exact name) was delicious - I loved the freshness of the vegetables and spices. The naans were also beautifully fresh, you could really taste the just-melted ghee! I get very excited when Indian food is this good. Was delighted to have found this place so close to where we were staying, completely by chance. Lovely waiters, too.

Just wow! My partner and I agree that this is the best Indian takeaway we’ve ever had had. We ordered two mains, rice and naan. Both mains were equally delicious (lamb rogan josh and chicken tikka masala). Sometimes takeaways can feel a bit gloopy, but the sauce was delicious. It tasted so fresh and healthy with a perfect kick. We felt like we were coming down with a cold and now feeling fantastic. Thank you Golden Ambal, we will be recommending you to everyone!

There's so many good restaurants to choose from in Leith/Edinburgh but the Golden Ambal will always be the place to go for dosa. Went with a friend for dinner and unsurprisingly I had a plain dosa for my starter. The chutneys are always delicious but the sambar was the star. I've read online that Indian families will save the sauce from a previous days meal to use as the sambar. In this case it's a simple vegetable curry like a base curry that other curries are made from. It's so good I would be happy with that as a main course. I was looking forward to a lamb vindaloo which was as delicious as I remembered it being. Not only is this a really tasty dish but it also cleared my sinuses and left me with the unique sense of well that comes after eating spicy food. Perhaps a little sweeter than usual but nevertheless delicious. The staff are always welcoming and the service was friendly and attentive. From the outside it looks like there's only 4-5 tables but there's a much larger dining area downstairs. It's also less than 5 minutes walk from the McDonald Road tram stop so very easy to get to.

I was so looking forward to a great dosa and they didn't let me down. If you don't know, dosas are thin pancakes made out of a batter with fermented rice & lentil. They come with great sambar and chutneys so for me a plain one makes a great starter. My lamb vindaloo main was really tasty and well spiced. We forgot the BYOB was for wine only and brought beer and 0% beer. Fair enough as they sell beer. Friendly service and good value for money.

I was not expecting too much here so was delighted to find that their South Indian food was excellent. Even more excited to find out that you can get a proper South Indian thali at lunch time on Saturdays and Sundays. A very good experience all round.
