We found this restaurant on google before our trip and were dying to try it. While we were in Edinburgh there was an Irish rugby match on which we couldn't miss ! We found an irish bar, Malone's and MUM was 2 doors down...... Perfect combo !. I had the mac and cheese and my boyfriend got a pie. The... More

After a hectic day on our feet we were tired and hungry. (I am fed up of artistic looking food that costs a fortune and leaves me....well, hungry actually). Mum's was absolutely the place to go; big reassuring portions of steak and ale stew with mash. So very tasty. Great restaurant, friendly staff, definitely worth a visit. See you again... More

We ate at MUMS our first night in Edinburgh and man, they set the bar high! The service is good and the food is excellent! We had the bangers & mash (chose 3 different meats, sooo good) and the venison stew (DELICIOUS!). We finished off with the rum raisin icecream and cranachan (Scottish dessert made with oats, raspberries, and cream).... More

Not the first time i have been to MUMS and there is a reason for that. The food is indeed comforting and perfect for the Edinburgh weather. I was feeling a bit under the weather so I ordered a delicious soup that they had that day and the broccoli with cauliflower and cheese an all time fave. Everything was superb.... More

I have Scampi and chips for dinner, it's like a portions of fish and chips. I was expecting some kind of prawn or langostine in my scampi but it's a fish. Too much batter on it. Jay have a macaroni cheese and he say it's good. If you're looking for a home cooking then it's the place to eat.

I've been here a few times, from when it used to be called Monster Mash. I really like the casual old decor, and the staff are quite chatty and funny. However the food isn't as fantastic as it used to be (undercooked chips and veg, smaller amount of mash potato) and the food service is really slow. I was given... More

We read about this place in our Edinburgh guidebook and when we arrived we were a bit dubious based on the outside and the fact that it was empty but we gave it a go and so glad we did. The sausage and mash was delicious - my husband tried 3 different types of sausage. He was able to have... More

We had the best Fish&Chips in Edinburgh on our last day during Hogmanay 16/17. really a great Location to eat. Nice people and great dishes at normal prices, just a Short walk away from the Royal Mile and around the corner of the National Museum of Scotland.

The mushroom wellington is amazing!! Hand cut chips was a nice touch but were a bit undercooked. Huge portion sizes, great selection of local beers and very friendly service.

We have been regular visitors to this restaurant for over seven years now and never cease to be impressed with the warm friendly welcome every customer receives and the delicious food that is served up from the kitchen. It is fair to say after visiting for so many years we have sampled most of the menu including breakfast, lunch and... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
