Extensive menu demonstrating the range of vegetarian dishes that can be produced with a little imagination. Friendly staff and good service. The environment did not, however, meet the high standard of the food. The restaurant lacked visible warmth and was reminiscent of a cafe rather than a restaurant

Firstly I’m not a vegetarian. So I won’t eat a veggie dish where Clearly it’s been put on the menu as an afterthought. David Bann is a dedicated vegetarian restaurant and delivers creative tastefully thought out combinations whilst not overstepping the mark forcing the diner to take a huge leap of faith. We enjoyed three courses of delicious and filling food for a very reasonable price. The staff were helpful and attentive and the decor is modern contemporary with a chilled out ambiance. I would definitely eat here again.

Everything was spot on. Great ambience, friendly and welcoming staff, and wonderful food. We had the koftas and cheese tartlet for starters, followed by the cauliflower curry and mushroom strudel for main, washed down with a nice pinot and tempranillo, and a shared assiette of desserts for two. Delicious. Great place. Recommended.

Just been here for valentine's Day meal. The food was excellent even for one of us being a carivore. The staff were excellent, efficient, attentive and knowledgeable about the food. The best service i have seen in a restaurant for a very long time. The cost was very reasonable only £75 for 2 people having 3 course meals, as well as coffee and a drink. Will definitely return next time we are in Edinburgh.

My brother and I went in for a vegan meal. However, what we got was pretty bad. My brother ordered limoncello and it tasted like toilet duck. I got hot port but it tasted like cheap mulled wine. I ordered the broad bean risotto topped with kohlrabi and my brother went for a chilli wrap, topped with a sweet potato patty and chocolate sauce. I don’t normally order risotto but I chose it because you never get kohlrabi anywhere so I was excited to have it. It arrived and the kohlrabi was just cold julienne sticks that were dried out and most definitely not fresh. That was disappointing enough but there were two halves of broad beans in the whole dish so I basically got rice. The flavour was very bland and I had to add plenty of salt and pepper to give it flavour. I say that as someone who uses very little at all in my cooking. It was passable enough but I only ate some of it. Normally my brother and I get a different dish and share it with each other but I told him I didn’t want to touch his. He said the chilli powder tasted as if it had all been dumped on the top of the chilli, not mixed through, and it was too much. The sweet potato patty looked totally out of place as it was just sitting there on top of the wrap, for God knows what reason. It was essentially a deep fried mini burger on top. There were all sorts of salad things and sour cream so on the side with lots of other things going on that was just far too much. There were too many competing flavours on the plate and the chocolate sauce was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. I had a taste of the sweet potato thing it was too mushy inside. I didn’t taste anything else as it was a dog’s dinner. We ended up leaving most of the food and my brother told them it was unacceptable. The person tried to turn it back on us by saying it maybe just wasn’t to our taste. We eat in lots of restaurants, and good restaurants, and that’s the first time we’ve ever complained about food. To make out that it’s our fault and not the sub-standard food is pretty appalling. Vegan/veggie restaurants seem to think they can just serve any food, and we will just accept it, because it’s vegan. So, we end up eating mediocre food, overpriced food. They’re often striving to give us ‘exciting’ combinations that sound ‘good’ on paper, instead of focusing on really good flavours, and often they’re just pretentious.

I ordered a cauliflower mains that was a curried cauliflower dish. Quite nice. This included two thimbles of a tomato chutney and some kind of 'Raitha'. Two sweet potato pakoras. So far so good. Until I saw the two small pieces of pita bread. The bread tested stale and raw. My friend's tea cup had a stain that she removed using a wet napkin end. Service was outstanding. Kudos to the wee girl who took our orders, brought our drinks and was generally helpful without being intrusive. In summary, the food was palatable. Almost good but the pita breads were a disappointment.

We spent the week travelling all over the UK and this was easily the best place we ate, I really wish there was a branch down here in London. Everything we ordered was delicious, perfectly prepared and the waiting staff were fantastic. They also have good social distancing in place with the current Covid-19 pandemic. I could have eaten 2 main course, not because the size of the portions but the party going on inside my mouth. It was also really well priced, below £50 for 2 courses and drinks for a couple. I'd have happily paid double for it. If you are heading to Edinburgh make sure you book a table here. This place is the perfect restaurant to take someone who thinks they need meat on a plate to satisfy their hunger. I'm a meat eater and I guarantee you, that if you try this place any views you may have had will vanish.

We had been to this restaurant on a previous visit to Edinburgh over a year ago and were wowed by it then - and we weren't disappointed this time! The food, the cocktails and the service were all excellent. There is a great 'buzz' in this restaurant and the staff are friendly and helpful, without intruding at all. The choice of dishes and the imaginative way they are cooked and served is absolutely brilliant! We had an absolutely super evening - and definitely hope to return when we are next in the city.

I was extremely surprised by the amazing meal I enjoyed with my sister at this lovely restaurant. We came to Edinburgh as a birthday treat and decided to try David Bann as the menu online clearer showed dishes I would be able to eat (milk and gluten) the food was stunning! And I mean that. Having been a vegetarian for 35 years, finding food that hits the spot in an environment that doesn't see being a vegetarian as an "add on" is enjoyable in itself. I had 3 courses, a rarity with my dietary requirements, and each course delivered. I would totally recommend.

We visited because there was a vegetarian in the group and we were told this was a great restaurant. The menu was very interesting for sure and a great wine list. In the end the food was really good. I loved the beetroot hummus and the salsa verse in particular. BUT! The service needs work. The server actually asked to take our order while balancing the next tables dirty dishes on her arm! The took our order this morning notepad. Impressive IF she hadn’t had to come back the ask again. It really felt like we had inconvenienced her. Sorry but a great visit means great food and great service.

We have been to David Banns many a time over the years however todays experience wasn't the best. The environment looks a bit run down now, dust & cobwebs in a few areas. Menus could do with a freshen up as a bit grubby. Food was ok but not the taste sensation we use to experience here. It didn't help that it was so cold from moment of arrival where we noticed most customers kept their coats on and another couple were moved from window as area was frozen. It doesn't quite create for comfortable dinning. My partners vegetable stew was ok but didn't look appealing (she left a good bit and it was noticed by waiter) also ordered panna cotta unfortunately unable to eat the pear which accompanied it as it was solid! Couldn't get cutlery in to cut it. We feel so disappointed in a place which we knew we always felt comfortable in where we felt assured good food was always priority. Yip very disappointed customers.

i have been here many times and it always delivers good food in a stylish environment, which for some reason is not always the case with vegetarian places. (think bright lighting and uncomfortable chairs). the menu is inventive (no oily stack of soggy aubergine or dry, sad couscous with raisins) and there are always great vegan options. my carnivore loves it and often requests a return visit. and it is great value.

Cannot express enough how lovely and attentive the staff are here - I'm gutted I didn't get his name, but we were mainly served by the waiter who's basically like Edinburgh's version of Fred from First Dates, in every sense. Have never met a friendlier waiter in my life. I ordered the haggis, and when it arrived, it was a little cold. The restaurant had started to get quite busy by this point, but Edinburgh Fred could tell something was up and immediately came over. I let him know the issue, and he apologised and took the dish to the chef - came back very shortly to apologise again, and let me know they would remake the dish from scratch. I've heard & lived through plenty of restaurant horror stories, and was a bit worried they'd just stick it in the microwave, so this was a real relief and overall was handled very well! These things do happen in a busy service, and the new dish I got was much, much better! Overall, I wasn't blown away by the food as the haggis wasn't as flavourful as I'd like, but I did really want to try veggie haggis whilst I was here, and I was still pretty happy with my choice! The presentation was also really nicely done, and I especially enjoyed the puff pastry and the whisky sauce the mash was in. Would have loved a few more spices in the haggis maybe, and also I think a bigger portion size, inline with the price point (especially as my friend I came with ordered a less expensive dish that was a lot more filling)!

As a non-vegan but hoping to move towards it, my fiancee and I visited last night, largely due to the positive reviews on TA. Staff - 3/5, could have been more helpful to new customers. Food / Drink - 3/5, reasonable quality, no explanation of where sourced unlike the ridiculously expensive "Rola Cola" or Karma Cola as it's called. It may be for ethical reasons why this is the main soft drink available, but where are the ethics in selling Grouse Whisky, Stolichnaya Vodka, etc. No Bacardi, hardly an ethical choice either. Overall, disappointing and not good value for money as they battle what's ethical and what isn't. Not the best introduction to the world of veganism, so be warned.

Always a great supporter of this place after working in the old Banns many lifetimes ago. My last visit was disappointing and I'll not go back. Service was very poor, I asked for another bread roll as we had a wait on starters and was told no as they "only order 1 per person", food was okay, my starter Syrian rissole was underwhelming needed more flavour. My main "A Sri Lankan curry" although not authentic was nice but served almost cold and came with an inedible rice cake cold hard thing. So no carbs with the meal I know a chef has off days but what left a bitter taste in the mouth was we were given the bill as we were finishing off our drinks and then at 9.58pm brought the card machine ( without asking for it!) to pay, talk about been pushed out the door. Made us feel very hurried and unwelcone after paying £50 pp for a mediocre meal

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
