Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sadly, I will not be booking David Bann again. A group of 10, our table was ready for us, in a super cold restaurant. Half an hour after we were all seated, (it felt a lot longer) someone bothered to come and get a food...order. As it was clearly going to be a long wait for the main course for those who had skipped the starter stage, I ordered bread for the table. The bread was unexciting, white and small/thin pieces, not nice warm, home made chunks that we had expected. The soup starter came stone cold for one personat the table and was sent back. Three of us who had the haggis main had to send it back - plates cold, food cold!! Had the restaurant been heaving with people, we might have understood, but there were only two other tables needing service and enough staff! How did three small main course plates arrive cold at the table? What was the chef doing? Given the price of this food, the whole experience was disappointing, to say the least. We have been before. We will not go back.More

There were four of us for dinner. I had checked the menu in advance. Service, ambiance wonderful. Alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks excellent and the restaurant has NO MUSIC. Bliss. However the food was very average. Our friends had two starters which were pretty good,...gnocchi and tartlet were pretty good, hot, flavourful and interesting. I had the stir fry with vegetables with smoked tofu. I wouldn't normally go for a stir fry as what ever you do a stir fry is something you can easily do well at home. This was extremely mediocre. The tomato 'sauce', didn't actually go with the dish and although I didn't have a starter I didn't finish it, it was verging on unpleasant and very disappointing. My partner had the Mexican spiced quinoa rolls. He said it was dry, tasteless and just warm. Now I very seldom do 'bad reviews' because restaurants have their off days but we were in a difficult situation as this restaurant was mainly chosen by our friends as part of our Edinburgh mini break. It felt very uncomfortable to start saying 'can I change this dish' or 'this dish is cold' etc so we put up with it (literally). My friends ordered the assiette of deserts to make up for it. Those very good I understand. Such a shame.More

Restaurant was able to change the dishes to accommodate my food intolerances. All is beautiful: the food, the staff, the decoration and the price. Highly recommend

Travelling with a vegetarian friend, we decided to book a table at this place. Even for non-vegetarians it was really nice. The food was fresh and tasty. Their wine list was impressive too. I guess one of the best vegetarian restaurants in in the area.

Lovely vegan / vegetarian menu. All three of us haggis, neeps, tatties and glass of rioja. We chose different options for dessert and all were good . Service is excellent and staff provided useful suggestions when we weren't sure about what to order. Nice atmosphere....Definitely worth a visit.More

This was absolutely the best restaurant of our entire vacation. 2 of 3 were not even vegetarian but they agreed it was their best meal of our trip. 2 ordered 2 appetizers as their meal so they could have a sampling. They enjoyed both choices....I had the Mexican quinoa rolls. Delicious. You must leave room for dessert. 2 of us shared the vegan dessert platter for 2. It was amazing.More

We hadn't booked but we were welcomed. I am a life vegetarian, my friend is a meat eater. The good here is exquisite. Fabulous flavours, textures and presentation. Service was top notch, serving staff were friendly and interested. Shame I live so far away but...I'd love to think I could do a return visit. Can't fault it. Don't want to!More

Always a great supporter of this place after working in the old Banns many lifetimes ago. My last visit was disappointing and I'll not go back. Service was very poor, I asked for another bread roll as we had a wait on starters and was...told no as they "only order 1 per person", food was okay, my starter Syrian rissole was underwhelming needed more flavour. My main "A Sri Lankan curry" although not authentic was nice but served almost cold and came with an inedible rice cake cold hard thing. So no carbs with the meal I know a chef has off days but what left a bitter taste in the mouth was we were given the bill as we were finishing off our drinks and then at 9.58pm brought the card machine ( without asking for it!) to pay, talk about been pushed out the door. Made us feel very hurried and unwelcone after paying £50 pp for a mediocre mealMore

Cannot express enough how lovely and attentive the staff are here - I'm gutted I didn't get his name, but we were mainly served by the waiter who's basically like Edinburgh's version of Fred from First Dates, in every sense. Have never met a friendlier...waiter in my life. I ordered the haggis, and when it arrived, it was a little cold. The restaurant had started to get quite busy by this point, but Edinburgh Fred could tell something was up and immediately came over. I let him know the issue, and he apologised and took the dish to the chef - came back very shortly to apologise again, and let me know they would remake the dish from scratch. I've heard & lived through plenty of restaurant horror stories, and was a bit worried they'd just stick it in the microwave, so this was a real relief and overall was handled very well! These things do happen in a busy service, and the new dish I got was much, much better! Overall, I wasn't blown away by the food as the haggis wasn't as flavourful as I'd like, but I did really want to try veggie haggis whilst I was here, and I was still pretty happy with my choice! The presentation was also really nicely done, and I especially enjoyed the puff pastry and the whisky sauce the mash was in. Would have loved a few more spices in the haggis maybe, and also I think a bigger portion size, inline with the price point (especially as my friend I came with ordered a less expensive dish that was a lot more filling)!More

The restaurant is an attractive building inside and in a great location in the heart of the old town. The food is exceptional with a brilliant, creative menu. Every member of staff is very friendly and welcoming. They are all lovely.

Cosy atmosphere where the food, especially the desserts are fabulous. Booked at the last minute and was not disappointed. City prices but well worth it - wouldn't think twice about revisiting.

Anna was our waitress, was very knowledgeable about the food and was warm, friendly and attentive, will definitely be...back when next in Edinburgh.More
