Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My partner and I unexpectedly tried out Monteiths for dinner and we are so glad we did! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was amazing! We didn’t have a reservation but they managed to squeeze us in after having a drink at the...bar while a table became available. Our table in the back of the restaurant was perfect for us and the service from our waitress Jessica was fantastic! She was friendly, professional and catered to all our questions about the menu. My partner had the fillet steak which he thoroughly enjoyed while I had the venison, which was some of the best I’ve ever had! The food was amazing, combined with the outstanding service we received, we will definitely be back again!More

We were made feel as...if we had free meal and people were looking at us. Humiliating . Terrible service and meal mediocre not worth the money . Prices expensive for what you get please don’t go here . It will only waste your day !More

Bartender and hostess were nasty. I walked in at 5:25 and asked if I had a drink at the bar, could I get a dinner table for 1 at around 5:45? Hostess said no problem. At 5:45 I asked the bartender, who heard my conversation...with the hostess, if my table was ready? She said it would be 6:30. I told her no my table is supposed to be ready. She said I failed to make a reservation. Then I found the hostess and asked her if my table was available. She said it would be around 6. At 6:10 There was never the thought of I’m sorry. I again inquired about my table to the hostess and she said it would be 6:30. I was the only person at the bar and not many people in the restaurant. I asked if I could order and eat my dinner at the bar. I was told I could only order from the limited bar menu. At 6:20 I was seated at a table that was never occupied. All of this time my waitress, the bartenders, and the hostess were 60% socializing together at the bar. These folks would not know what to do if really busy. The food was good but not outstanding and the portions very small especially for the prices. I gave my waitress a nice cash tip and asked her not to share with the hostess or the bartender.More

We were looking for a place for our last night in Edinburgh and I was not expecting much based on the location (Royal Mile). I was wrong. First we sat at the bar and had amazing cocktails (along with a solid haggis bon bons) and...then had a tremendous dinner (lamb and venison - both cooked to perfection.More

My partner and I booked for dinner for my birthday. He chose scallops for a starter. Very disappointed to see only one scallop on the plate. The waitress explained that it depends on the size of the scallop as to whether you get one or...two. This was an average sized scallop and for £15 we expected at least 2 scallops as is served in most restaurants. Very misleading as the menu states ‘scallops’ - (pleural), so maybe a note should be added to say how many are served. My partner had the lamb which was undercooked and tough. I had the pork belly which was lovely. Overall, a bit overpriced and the portion sizes are small. You definitely have to add sides to make up to a decent portion. Don’t think we will be returning.More

Four of us had booked, everyone had three courses and every part was wonderful. I had a smoked haddock starter, followed by fillet steak and a chocolate caramel mousse. The pork belly is also recommended. Staff were great, very attentive, never left waiting.

Our group of four (two couples) enjoyed a delicious and relaxing dining experience at Montieth’s. It is somewhat of a “hidden jewel” as both couples (traveling separately) had difficulty locating the entrance to Montieth’s, but once we arrived and entered the friendly and somewhat low...key ambiance of the restaurant, we knew we were in the right place! We made our way to our reserved table and were met by friendly waitress, who made our dining experience very memorable. The food was delicious and the drinks were cold. We even splurged and shared some very tasty desserts. Overall, it was a very enjoyable dining experience; one that we would repeat if we lived in the area.More

Decided to eat here on impulse and we’re glad we did. Food was lovely, good cocktails, friendly staff. It’s reasonably priced food and drink, compared with other restaurants in the area, and we would definitely eat here again. The only reason I haven’t given 5...stars is that the servings were on the small side, but all in all, a good place to eat.More

This is our 5th visit. Highly recommend this restaurant as one that stands out from the crowd on a global basis. The expertise in putting together unique flavoured dishes shows skills beyond your usual expectation. First class service from kitchen to front of house. Waylon...and Brendan as chefs have produced 5 memorable meals. Always our first choice!!!More

this was areal disappointment We were early but no effort made to reduce wait although tables were available The food was equally disappointing I have for over 30 years been a speaker at Burns Suppers across the west of Scotland average say 4-5 per year...so I have a fair experience of haggis and this was the worst ever It was so highly salted it was for me uneatable and although I left most of it no enquiry was made as to why. Equally the monkfish although perfectly acceptable was extremely small and to have to pay extra to add a bit of mash was i felt ridiculous my husband struggled to find any haddock in his starter which was also on the very small side. I am aware this is city centre Edinburgh and expect prices accordingly but value for money is not an unreasonable expectation either. The staff were pleasant and service was fine. However I will not be making a return visit .More

Everything - food, service - is OK. Nothing memorable, nothing special, especially for the price. At least they offer draft beer that I found rare in Edinburgh.

Used to love visiting Monteiths but think it may have changed hands & the last 2 visits have been disappointing. Both visits were with voucher deals for steak, chips, sauce & glass of Cava. The steaks were not great on our last visit but we...allowed for a bad night & booked again. On our recent visit the steaks looked dried out on the outside, like they had been under a heat lamp, but did not appear to be over cooked, hard to cut, chewy & I left a lot of 'bits' on my plate. I called this out when our plates were taken away & they removed the starter from the bill as an apology which was appreciated. There were 3 other tables in whilst we were there who also appeared to be having issues with the steaks & also using voucher deals. Possibly using poorer quality steaks for their voucher deals? Hope they get this issues sorted as I really enjoy visiting the restaurant & would like to go back.More
