Since we were staying at the Ardgowan, Playfair's was a natural choice for our Easter Sunday dinner. We had the three course meal. The appetizer was a smoked salmon linguine. It was creamy and delicious. Our main was the Scottish Lamb rump with ratatouille. Tender...and cooked to perfection. The sauces were light and complimentary. For desert we had vegan chocolate cake and non-dairy ice cream. That was due to a dairy allergy which they accommodated. The service was excellent. This was our favorite meal from our two week trip.More

Went for dinner on Saturday 26th February 2022. The venison main was superb. It is part of a set priced dinner and we are so glad we ordered it. Fantastic value.

Part of the Ardgowan Hotel, but accessible separately directly from the street, Playfairs restaurant serves wonderful food at very fair prices on a 2 or 3 course option menu. They also offer 4 different types of local steaks for an additional premium and the two...steak eaters amongst our group were very happy with their choices. Two of us rated our duck main as excellent and the Cranachan was superb. There is plenty of variety to the menu and a reasonably priced, but not extensive, wine list.More

Visited here at the end of October, the restaurant was recommended by fellow golfers, and we’re glad we listened! We could only get a table at 6.30 pm which they said they’d need back for 8pm, but in no way did we feel rushed. My...haggis starter was served in a bowl, which made scraping the plate clean with a fork difficult, it was so fabulous I was tempted to use my fingers to get every last morsel out the dish! Hubby’s pheasant starter was perfect. I had the duck for mains (clearly from a local estate cause I found two bits of shot, not a problem for me, but maybe for others?) and hubby had the hake. Two of the nicest dishes we’ve ever tasted, from anywhere in the world. The combination of foods and favours in each dish was simply perfect, and presentation of all food was fantastic too, well done chef! Front of house staff were all lovely, really nice to see such a young, and enthusiastic team after all the issues that the hospitality industry has had thrown at them during Covid. Even with desserts, coffee, liqueurs and wine, the bill was still very reasonably priced, this place is well worth a visit !More

Dined in this restaurant last night whilst staying in hotel. We found the food good but not amazing. For me the flavours didn’t marry well together so whilst some things tasted good on their own, they didn’t go with the rest of the dish. Prices...weren’t bad but to charge a £5 supplement for cheeses is a bit harsh. That makes it £13! Staff were all pleasant. There was a group of 6 plus young lads who came in to the restaurant asking for pints of cider to drink outside. This was allowed and they were then joined by more mates and had more pints. Maybe unfortunate that we were sat right at the door and aware of their coming and going. Perhaps if restaurant going to allow this, they should offer table service to avoid eating guests feeling like they are in a pub?More

What a mixed visit we had last night. A cosy lovely place we had been to years ago. All was fine until the starter came out - I love a scallop starter but was bemused to find one shall scallop alone in the middle of...my plate without much else. It was beautifully cooked , but was odd as I was finished in two bites and had to wait for my husband to finish his starter. The waitress then came and asked ‘how was it ?’, and I (apologetically) said ‘it was a little small with only one scallop … but it was beautifully cooked though.’ to which she looked blankly at me , cleared the dishes in silence and walked away without looking at us. Felt profoundly uncomfortable and quite unwelcome, and felt horrible for passing on (polite) honest feedback. The pork main I had was the best thing I’ve eaten in the past 2 years - utterly delicious and creative and just perfect. I was keen to pass this on to the chef but felt so uncomfortable about the earlier reaction I was a bit hesitant , although I did say the main was delicious when she asked so I hope it got back to the kitchen. However, this was also met with silence. Maybe the waitress was new or having a bad day , the food was wonderfully cooked and I guess portion sizes are a personal thing, but hope this service issue is improved. Atmosphere was nice though and decor was great. I wish this wee place all the best.More

we came her on saturday. My previous review indicated hake and artichoke veloute dish that i thought couldnt be beaten. It was on saturday the halibut dish was oustanding. It was sublime and the best I have eaten. How a restaurant that charges this can produce...food of this quality is beyond me, amazing. Inventive complex delicious. restaurants up the road would have charged double for for this. finished with chocolate fondant oozing chocolate. Coffee and wine £90 for 2 people how do you do it. Service fabulous. Not pretentious doesn't need to be the food speaks for itself. Great job cant wait to come back to see the new fish creationMore

We have eaten here a few times and have found it to be most enjoyable. Lovely food and capable staff. Our recent visit, However, will be our last. The food was lovely, but the service was appalling. It was clearly understaffed and the two waitresses...were not attentive to our needs at all. No-one asked if we wanted drinks, the main courses were served at different times and had to be returned as two of them were cold. The third person in our group was almost finished by the time they were served again. They offered free desserts, but we had no time to order them. The bill was not adjusted accordingly. Pretty awful.More
