Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Was closed on the Tuesday afternoon we visited Ness. Not mentioned on the website so we went to the historical society instead - which was great!

We went for dinner and ordered scampi and chips and pizza. The pizza was thin crust, perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic. The scampi was delicious and very fresh. Chips were amazing! Sticky toffee pudding and mint aero cheesecake for dessert both of which were totally...scrumptious! The staff were really lovely. Toilet was spacious and clean. There is a lovely selection of gifts for sale in the restaurant most of which are locally produced. Finally, the views from the restaurant are spectacular! We watched the waves crashing onto the shore whilst we ate. A wonderful place and definitely worth visiting!More

We parked our camper at the harbour and went to Breakwater for lunch ( we always aim to support local businesses) On arrival the cafe was impressive with lovely views though a little saddened that our little dog was not welcome inside and it was...to cold and windy to eat outdoors, but not a huge problem as hubby took her back to the camper-van as The dog friendly cafe nearby was closed that day. We had pizzas chips and coffee and a glass of red wine All was very nice. The pizza bases were nice and fresh thin and crispy perfect for us. However AFTER I had ordered food I mentioned we were parked at the harbour and this appeared frowned upon by the waitress! Remarking that there was a campsite nearby! I felt a sense of unwelcoming and next visit I will try the doggy friendly café nearby!More

Arrived today. Saturday. Needing table for 5. But fully booked so could only get a table outside. Luckily for us the weather was favourable so we went for it. I can only say the food was fabulous. The views amazing. Good service and great value...for money. Very highly recommend but play safe folks and book in advance for this fabulous cafe.More

Stopped at the top of the island for a spot of lunch. Nicest lentil and carrot 🥕 soup I think I've ever had. Chips were great fries and the cheese, ham and onion toasties was magnificent. Reasonable prices and gargantuan portions. A large selection of...drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and very friendly and efficient service. The weather was brutal but the setting is really glorious. I hope I get the chance to go back.More

Lovely cafe overlooking the Ness Harbor. I had the lentil soup and my husband had the fried prawns. Both were great and the chips were excellent!

We have gone to the breakwater a few times and will be there again. Toasties are great, try the haggis pizza, and OK it isn't fine dining, but they do the best scampi and chips in the world (this is not an exaggeration), if that's...not enough try the deserts - yumMore

We were visiting family in Lewis recently (late October) and one of our excursions took us to Port of Ness. It was lunch time and we felt hungry, but didn't expect to find anywhere in so remote a location, especially outwith the main holiday season....But, we chanced upon The breakwater. We didn't expect much as it looked like a small cafe, but the menu looked promising. I ordered a pizza with additional bacon and anchovies. The rest of the party ordered various things, mainly burgers etc with fries. I can't speak for their experiences - but they left nothing! My pizza was stunning - beautifully thin and crisp pastry and the topping was full and generous. It was perfect. I haven't had such a good one for years. In addition, I did try the side order of fries and I'm sure they were double-fried! They were beautiful too. Coffees etc were all that one could hope for and the service was friendly and efficient. - a pleasure to experience. When we first entered the premises, it was empty, but when we left it was full and we noted a lot of tables had been reserved, so obviously the Breakwater is well-known and popular on Lewis., and rightly so. I'll happily revisit - and might well consider booking in advance as it's obviously popular and deservedly seems to be doing well. Incidentally the views from outside are spectacular! Well worth a visit if you're up there. Well done!More

We visited on a recent trip to Lewis. My wife asked for a latte ‘extra hot’. The lady explained that she always tried to provide them extra hot as she wasn’t a fan of tepid coffee. Sure enough when the coffee came, not only was...it extra hot, it was considered to be the best coffee she’s ever had. That good she had another one! We ordered some food too and that was excellent. The service was first class and the staff very friendly. This, along with the stunning views, made for a wonderful lunch. All in all a great find!More
