About
Escape the city at this handsome local in the heart of the foodie Mendips. Eat well in the woody, intimate and candle-lit dining room. The generous menu: locals look forward to steak night with meat sourced from Walter Rose butchers in Wiltshire. Bedrooms are up steep concrete steps from the courtyard (bit of building work going on next door but quiet at night). Find serene creams, decorative fireplaces, Egyptian cotton sheets and smart coffee machines.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. I decided to eat here and the food was exceptional. The room was clean, up to date and spacious. I’m very fussy with pillows and there was a choice. The facilities...in the room was great and it’s a shame I wasn’t here longer. 10/10.More

The room was well appointed and the en-suite very spacious. Breakfast was excellent served by a warming log fire. I would thoroughly recommend this establishment for anyone visiting the Bath, Bristol, Wells area. The Chew Valley Lake is well worth a visit as are the...standing stones at Stanton Drew.More

The Bear & Swan was, for me, a perfect experience for our friend group's Christmas get together. When I say perfect, I mean *perfect*. To go through everything - it was a group of about 10 of us, and we all had different things on...the menu. I did the three course Christmas meal (which amounted to four course really) for £40. So amongst the pluses: * The food portions were just right * The taste was delicious. Absolutely delicious and full of flavour * The Deconstructed Cheesecake isn't a cheesecake but all the bits to make one spread out on a plate. When it came we were all 'what the heck' as maybe we didn't read their menu right - we hadn't - but those of us who had it, it worked! * The service was SUPERB. The staff, friendly, welcoming, appreciative of light banter, quick to serve, organised just with the right timings for the food so nobody was out or ever waiting too long... it was fantastic. * The blokes loos were clean enough * The decor was warm and homely and the place felt welcoming, not a grubby 'local' Resultantly although it was towards pricey, this felt entirely justified as it backed it up with superb, well, everything. I don't mind paying a premium if a place can back it up. This place did. I've been once before and it was good. Coming back to it, it was utterly amazing and I want to go again. Thank you for a special Christmas meal guys!More

Food was on point; good presentation, fair portion, quality and taste was definitely the highlight. The team who served us were very friendly, helpful and accommodating (Will, Matt and Hannah), with a warm and prompt greeting upon arrival despite being very busy. Catered to our...needs with minimal fuss and maximum smiles. The room is beautifully presented, bright, clean and has useful amenities (kettle, cups, tea, coffee, milk, iron, ironing board, extra heating, fan, shower, sink, toilet, wardrobe, hangers, free WIFI and TV. The bed was large and super comfortable. Also worth noting that despite being very busy in the pub, we could hardly hear a thing in the room! Only difficulty was finding parking. (No fault of venue itself). All in all, a really enjoyable stay and would happily return.More

We have just had two days stay at this great pub/ hotel. Food was exceptional both evening dinner and breakfast. The room had everything you needed, and was clean and fresh with everything you would expect. I will say our room was very warm but...easily sorted by opening our window for a short while. Great friendly staff that could not do enough for you. Would definitely stop here againMore

We stayed at this lovely country pub for 2 nights as well as having dinner there both nights. The rooms are spacious and very bright and modern and the pub itself is a gem. Food is amazing and the service is friendly and personal. Perfect...location if you want to visit Bath and it is also close to Bristol airport. What a great find!More

We were in here midweek for lunch. There’s comfortable seating, nice décor and the staff were excellent. We had a couple of drinks and meals, all reasonably priced. Our only disappointment was the quality of the calves liver in one of the meals which was...very chewy and tuby. Otherwise good.More

Great pub/restaurant just quite noisy so my grandmother wasn’t really able to hear our conversations but was a good atmosphere to it. Staff were friendly and attentive. Has a lovely outdoor space for dining and live music, and a smoking area. Parking isn't the best...due to location in chew magna. Food was good and tasty just don't fill up on bread like i did!More

Exceptional service, food quality, menu choice and ambiance. The meals were outstanding, beautifully presented and so fresh that is hard to find these days. Even the prices are sensible for such outstanding quality.
