Service with a smile and very good Sunday lunch. Two areas for eating. A formal, waiter service restaurant and an informal bar area. Having eaten in the restaurant previously we managed to find a table in the bar area this time. Seating included lots of high tables with bar stool seating and a number of more standard height tables with padded seating. The bar was very busy with pretty much everyone eating so as beggars can't be choosers we landed a high/bar stool table. Menus were given to us by a passing staff member with a friendly smile and greeting. This excellent style of service was permanent throughout our time here even when the staff were rushed off their feet serving drinks or food, taking orders and clearing tables. Although not a huge menu there would be enough to satisfy all but the most picky of diners. I think the restaurant uses the same menu. We both chose a Sunday lunch, one pork the other beef which we were asked how we liked it done which is not always common place and was a tick in another box for us. The food was served pretty without too much delay and included two slices of meat on a serving of mashed potatoe, a huge and very tasty Yorkshire pudding and an extra jug of gravy. This was accompanied with separate dishes of red cabbage, swede mash, some small roast carrots and parsnips and four roast potatoes to be shared. The waiter also immediately said that if we wanted more veg just to let them know which, as we both have healthy appetites, we immediately did asking for an extra dish of the roasted veg/potatoes. To our minds this is a great idea as it helps to prevent waste (by not serving too much to start with) but allows those such as us to be satiated! A BIG tick in the box! Food was all tasty and very well presented. With the extra portion of veg it left us both very satisfied, maybe too satisfied as we couldn't manage a desert. All was very well priced (less than £20 for a Sunday lunch), particularly considering the service and the quality of food. We have definitely paid more for less of both elsewhere. Throughout our short stay, people were constantly coming in looking for tables and it was the same as we were leaving as someone asked if we were leaving so they could get the table. Another very good sign. Fair to say, we can highly recommend the Pickled Sprout.

Staying at the hotel for one night celebrating our wedding anniversary received 20% off food from the hotel. However that changed from actual booking 18/05/2024 to arriving 20/05/2024 the original offer was £10 off food & drinks. Food was really nice, service a little slow had to ask for our drinks as they didn't arrive, garden room lovely, staff friendly. Had drink in the bar prior to dining also a nice area.

Won’t go there again, for the following reasons: • Had a table booked well in advance and looking forward to going. Staff ignored us. Missus had to find them to ask for menus. There were staff available but didn’t seem to be doing anything. • The food was cold. • I asked for more gravy – I didn’t get any. It was also lukewarm and the synthetic kind of stuff you get from a supermarket. • They had plastered by sandwich with some awful margarine stuff that dripped all over the plate and table. • Ordered a roast pork baguette. Once I’d chopped the gristle off it - it was about 2” (50mm) diameter of flaccid white fatty meat. Under seasoned over cooked. Served with 2 teaspoons of cheap jar apple sauce and a 1” (25mm) diameter of just add water sage and onion stuffing. • Didn’t eat much of the food. When eventually I was asked what to tell the chef. My comment: “Tell them to throw it in the bin.” • The public bar hadn’t been cleaned in a long time. • When the waitress brought our meal a lot of the leaves (or salad) went on the floor. No apology or attempt to clear it up. Even as we left. • The staff totally ignore you. • The menu is “posh” but nothing on it to eat. • I ordered a £22 bottle of Pino Grigio – plonked on the bar, open when I got it, had to asked for a cooler. • No bitter or hand pulled beer. Guinness had run off too. Even though they have +10 electric pump continental and American style beers on draught that nobody is drinking. • Unsupervised kids running all over. • There was a shift manager but he was wearing his coat too busy on his mobile and nowhere to be seen when I wanted to complain. • I felt sick after eating and had to catch the waitresses’ attention to clear the food away. She was just stood chatting at the end of the bar. • Seating was tatty – I can live with that – I like old fashioned pubs. This place isn’t trying to be old fashioned! • I was ready to only pay for the drinks and call the HSE in for a food hygiene rating. Still think it needs a visit. If you think this is fiction. Up to you. The photo is about 12:30pm 02/01/25. We were the first there apart from another couple that were sat elsewhere. I’ve removed the names from the receipt. People’s identity should be protected. Bonus side. They didn’t charge for my sandwich. Still, I wouldn’t go back.

Very disappointing experience. Really nice restaurant however agree with some of the comments relating to the staff in other reviews are true. Lots of staff just chatting. Young lad who served was pleasant. Scallops sauce had separated so water sat in the bottom of the shell to which the waitress told us the chef said it was garlic butter (after much debate and the scallops going cold). Shared platter was very bland. Overall, very expensive and average food at best.

We were staying in the attached Yorkshire Hotel about which I have no problem in recommending a 5 star review, so booked the Pickled Sprout rather than hunt out a restaurant in a strange town. What a mistake. The staff were good, but they should be in a place that had us and one other couple in it. Neither of us were drinking, and both opted for the same starter, prawn cocktail. There isn't much can go wrong with this, and it was good. Then both of us went for the Slow Cooked Beef Suet Pudding – £19.95. I was a cook at sea for 20 years. At no time have I ever come across beef that is welded to suet pudding. This was literally like rock. I dont complain much in restaurants as I've worked behind the scenes in catering, but wow. The waiter came across and tried to get the knife though the pastry/concrete on both our plates, but failed. We did get a 20% decrease in the bill, but given that we didn't receive the 20% off that was advertised as being valid as we were staying in the hotel... All in all, we didn't like it. I can see why, on our three day stay there, the restaurant was never even half full. We ate out for the rest of our evening meals. £20 for inedible suet pudding...come on. Neither of us are ones to leave food. From the website.. "Led by Executive Head chef, Richard Ferebee, The Pickled Sprout lets you be true to yourself, whether you're looking for a superfood dining experience or a hearty flavourful menu, or something in between, you're sure to leave enriched from within". We left hungry, Richard.

Service was desperately slow. It was 20 mins before anyone deigned to ask us if we wanted a drink and then we had to ask twice to place a food order. The food was ordinary at best. The nutroast was terrible tasting of absolutely nothing. The sticky toffee pudding (which we had to wait 30 minutes for and again after several requests for a desert menu) was so hard you couldn’t cut it with the edge of a fork and tasted like it had been over microwaved. Unlikely to return

My friends and I visited the Pickled Sprout for Sunday lunch. The staff were very friendly and we were shown to our table straight away. As it was Sunday, the menu was a roast dinner, but there were other options available. We chose the 2 course menu. The food arrived in good time and was cooked perfectly. The food was hot.Vegatables were served separately. There was enough for all. We did not feel rushed to vacate our table even though the restaurant was busy. The restaurant is very clean.

We booked in advance and were taken to a table in the bar area. The table was scratched and dirty, the menus were also dirty and curling. The other members of our party arrived 10 minutes late and the waitress tried to take our order before they had arrived. When they did arrive it took 20 minutes to order. We asked what beer they had and the Waitrose said he was knew and didn’t know, had he turned around then he could have seen the pumps, we also ordered a coke and said out of the bottle and not the tap. They brought it out of the tap and replaced it when we complained, although we were charged for both! Prawn cocktails and white bait was ordered for starters, the prawn cocktail was small and served in a large cocktail glass, I assume to make it look like there was more in it than there actually was. Unfortunately it was almost impossible to eat without tipping the lot out of the glass and we didn’t even get a slice of bread with it. For main course it was Sunday roast beef and fish and chips, we asked for the beef to be as rare as possible. We were told that it would come as it was and there was it, well it was horrendous and we only had a small amount. The chips were also left as apparently they were terrible, despite so little being eaten it was not questioned by the staff. We were then asked if we wanted desert and said we would take a look at the menu. We were immediately told they needed the table in 20 minutes, so how we were going to order, be served and to eat desert in 20 minutes is beyond me. £130 for 4 for the worst meal in a long time and if we were not with family we would have sent the lot back.

Popped in for an impromptu lunch whilst shopping with a friend, and I'm glad we did. Despite being busy with a festive rush, we were given a comfortable seat and taken care of by the friendly staff. My friend and I ordered a light lunch of chunky chips, and the mini Greek salad and the portions were excellent, just the right size for feeling full but not too full! Including a soft drink each, our bill came to £27.50 with no service charge added (a refreshing change!) The food was plentiful, delicious and fresh and the ambience was pleasant. I'll definitely be returning to TPS again!!

The Sunday lunch was well presented and very tasty and I would definitely recommend the food. What lets this establishment down is the waiting staff. We had to ask for the dessert menu, nobody asked if our meals were enjoyable. We watched several other customers having the same problem. Some customers got up and paid for their food because nobody bothered to come with the card machine to let them pay. The team of waiting staff need to someone to clarify their roles and organise them.

Allergies beware! I looked at the menu in advance to check that it would be safe for me to visit as a coeliac and there seemed to be a few options on the menu that are gluten free, however on arrival we were given menus without these options on, and when I queried they said the website was not up to date so most of those options were gone, the only thing I could have was an altered roast dinner. I spoke to the waitress for a while about being coeliac and asking about cross contamination and how the roast would be changed for GF (no Yorkshire, no stuffing). No one has a clue, I was brought a roast with a Yorkshire pudding and stuffing on, which I obviously queried and so they took it back to the kitchen to replace, I reminded them that I have a gluten allergy and cannot have anything that contains gluten - also told the chefs that were plating up my food. A plate then came out with mash, chicken and stuffing on! I queried if the stuffing was gluten free - it wasn’t, so I politely declined another plate as I did not trust that the food would be safe for me to eat. It’s a shame as the rest of the group’s food looked nice.

Thank you for leaving your feedback. I apologise for the disappointing experience you had and this is certainly not the experience we want our customers to have whatsoever. It is only through constructive feedback such as yours that we are made aware of problem areas so we can implement changes to improve the guest experience all round. We decided to call in here for a drink and a bite for lunch. The staff didn’t greet us, had an ask at bar for a menu. Staff in the main very unfriendly. To the point some were ignorant. We ordered a drink, didn’t feel welcome at all! No one came to ask if we wanted to order food when we were ready, had to try and get someone’s attention, which was easier said than done. Food eventually came, which was enjoyable, sandwich was a big portion. Couldn’t fault the food, but the service was not at all good. It used to be really lovely place but there is no ambience very dark. Maybe better in summer? Need to practice on customer service.

We chose pickled sprout for dinner as had been before for lunch a few months ago.Greeted by friendly staff and seated at our table.Caitlin took our drink order and we chose a nice chilled bottle of Pinot Grigio. We were given plenty of time to look at the large menu,my partner chose the Suet pudding and I chose the Indian burger, and we chose correctly. Great tasting food, freshly cooked and piping hot.We were so full we were glad we didn't order starters. But of course we had to look at desserts. We chose Tiramisu with two spoons.Absolutely delicious, rich and creamy. A Huge thanks to the chef, great tasting hot food, great ingredients and quality, and thank you to Caitlin for her input and care she took of us. We will be back for sure.

Yum, one word needed. Arrived for dinner on a wet Sunday night, remembering the last meal we had here last year and hoping for the same. Greeted by a bearded chap in a t shirt and was shown to our table. Given drink menu and food menu, lots to choose from and the good looking Sunday dinner menu too.Drinks were ordered and we perused the menu,I really wanted the Indian burger but it wasn't on the Sunday menu :( My partner ordered the Roast pork dinner, I asked about the burger and the waiter went to check,Yay ..it can be done, luckily the bearded guy was the regional manager and asked the kitchen to do it for me. The food was excellent, we even ordered the creme brulee with raspberry and was so sweet and lovely but had to be demolished:) Service was spot on,very attentive.Freya was lovely.Thsnks to the chefs once again, looking forward to our next return visit. :)
