Proper coffee, proper people and definitely the best in Harrogate.

I’m a regular customer, ( practically daily ), a coffee addict and a bit of a coffee shop tart…I’ll go anywhere for a good brew! BUT, BUT, the Bean & Budd is the best in Harrogate by some margin. The coffee knowledge, choice, and quality are unrivalled. The homemade cakes terrific and they make “proper” sandwiches. You pay a fair bit more than at Costa, Nero or Starbucks but you get a lot, and I mean a lot more quality. Oh and a loo that is clean and actually works! This is a real business servicing the community better than high street chains can, run by its owners ( Helen & Phil) and with added bonus feature that the piped music is actually interesting. You might be sat cogitating over an Ethiopian flat white & home made rock bun to the dissonant melody of Belle & Sebastian or the now seemingly quaint protest of Billy Bragg. No corporate blandness here. Bean & Budd, best in town.

Relaxed Tea

Chose this little tea and coffee shop based on reviews The staff were very friendly and no issues when we were deciding on inside or outside sat inside then moved outside. The staff carried the drinks outside without any moaning thanks. The owner clearly knows her products very well and the house blend Tea was excellent We had a bacon and Brie and chorizo and tomato sandwich and both were really tasty. Lovely relaxing atmosphere no rush at all, thanks to you all Looking forward to seeing you soon

Lovely staff, lovely place!

Lovely little coffee shop with a good selection of cake. Small menu available offering sandwiches and soup (I recommend the cheese and pickle sandwich). Staff were very welcoming. I recommend a visit to Bean&bud if you are in Harrogate!

We are not at all over fussy

We are not at all over fussy and never leave a bad review but I’m really cross. Came today with my family, had the worst customer service I’ve ever encountered! Asked for a skinny half shot latte, 2 lattes, 3 soft drinks, 4 bacon sandwiches and 1 cheese and pickle toasties which came to £40.40. We are in Harrogate so I expected to be paying over the odds, this wasn’t A massive problem. Shortly after ordering with a lad who had little customer Service skills as we had asked for the bacon well done and was told this wasn’t possible as it was pre cooked and then warmed so basically that was how it was coming, a man came out to say he had no white rolls so seeded rolls were going to be provided. I asked if it could be white bread for all 4 and as they didn’t have enough White bread I asked for a refund for the food as my little ones are actually fussy about bread. As well as the husband! This obviously upset the man as i was made to feel like an awkward customer. I then asked which one was the skinny half shot and was told they were all skinny with one shot. I then said I asked for one skinny and half a shot and the lad said I asked you what milk you wanted for the other two which was not asked at all. Really poor experience the absolute worst customer service and to top it off The coffee was warm not hot to add insult to injury. Had they been slightly apologetic for anything I wouldn’t be writing this review as it would have been dealt with. Some people’s money just isn’t good enough for some establishments!

Hi PKBraz, on this occasion we were unable to provide what you and your family wanted. As explained, we’d mostly sold out of our usual brown rolls so offered to make the sandwiches on sliced bread. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough white bread for all four, and as your family didn’t want the brown bread, you were fully refunded for the food. As a footnote to that, our bacon is locally sourced, well cooked and warmed to order, all of which was carefully explained to you at the time. Regarding the coffee, it is possible there was a mix up at the ordering stage and we will always rectify these when informed or offer a refund. Although you did come back into the shop to inform us that you thought the order was incorrect - and this is key when reading your review - you said “…but it’s okay we’ll just drink them anyway.” Had you asked us to remake your drinks we would happily have done so. As a Speciality coffee shop, our coffees are made as per SCA standards. Finally, the member of staff who you refer to as “a lad with little customer service skills” is actually a highly trained barista with over seven years’ experience working in the hospitality sector and has an impeccable customer service record.

Don’t bother if you’re more than 2

We had such a lovely and exceptional first visit to Bean & Bud last month that there was no question where to have a little break when we took our visiting family to Harrogate today. Unfortunately, we were basically refused to be served as they can apparently only cater for groups of 2. We were given outrageous reasons, which changed every time we debunked them. We were rather hoping to come very regularly and also make this our go to coffee beans’ seller but the very sour taste that our attempt at having a lovely little lunch left, made us so angry that we definitely won’t come back. We were immediately met with a bark and very rude behaviour upon entering which was absolutely shocking. This seems to be a cafe for couples only, which doesn’t feel the need to cater to customers who aren’t local and well known already. So don’t waste any time walking there if you’re visiting and especially if there’s not just 2 of you … because allegedly the food and drinks wouldn’t fit on the table (- one of the reasons we were given why they couldn’t serve us.) Absolutely ridiculous.

Hi lilly8r, the fact you had a lovely and exceptional visit before might have made someone else think before taking to the keyboard and posting a damning one-star review. But, here we are so, here we go: You were a party of four adults, two children and a double buggy, which as you know, having been with us before, is tricky at the best of times and nigh impossible in an exceptionally busy mid-day rush. We will ALWAYS go out of our way to accommodate groups and ALWAYS welcome regulars and strangers alike. Most folk appreciate the constraints we find ourselves under and make allowances, but not you apparently. You were not barked at - the member of staff who asked if he could help (as you passed everyone at the front to have a look inside) is the kindest and gentlest person you'll ever meet and incapable of being rude....firm yes, but never rude. As explained to you, we didn't have two tables to put together at that time - you could see that for yourself - but you were given the option to wait (and advised it may be up to 20 minutes), since tables do turn over relatively quickly. As it happened, within 10 minutes folk were moving and you were offered tables inside for your group and your buggy. You refused - for reasons of your own, which is fair enough. However, and this is the rub - you asked if you could sit at table 12 outside. As outrageous a reason as it may seem to you, that is a table for two as it's a) next to Martin House's property, so as good neighbours we don't impinge on them and b) on the very edge of our land....so no, you couldn't sit on the other side of the planter as you'd be on the public highway! The outside tables measure 60cms x 60cms so no, the food, drinks and accoutrements for 4 adults and a couple of little ones would not fit on the table safely and I would have thought that was not 'absolutely ridiculous', just common sense. Finally, when we receive a bad review, we take a step back, reflect and investigate - it's a pity some customers don't do the same before posting.

Cafe gone Pear Shaped!

I used to be a regular customer to Bean and Bud when it was run by Ruth and Haydon. It WAS in every way exemplary. The food, coffee and standard of service were second to none and a warm welcome always awaited you, BUT it now has new owners and frankly they have no idea how to run a coffee shop. The coffee shop is kept clean, but the quality of the food ingredients is in my opinion below par. Ruth and Haydon prided themselves in sourcing the best quality bread and sandwich ingredients, but the new owners are cynical and think they can get away with charging eye watering prices for subservient food. The proprietor comes across as downright curt and offhand and makes you feel that having customers in her cafe is a nuisance to say the least! Sadly another great cafe bites the dust.

Hi Q7360DMruthb, firstly, we have been the owners of Bean&Bud for almost 2 years. We mention this because in a post of yours in Aug 2019, whilst absolutely slating another hard working independent in Harrogate, you were singing our praises. Secondly, the food ingredients are sourced from EXACTLY the same suppliers e.g. Lancaster's Bread, Flying Baker's flapjacks, Acorn Dairy organic milk and butter, Barber's Vintage Cheddar, Rosebud Preserves’ Great Yorkshire Pickle....shall we go on? We have introduced a couple of new lines (locally sourced bacon for our butties and locally made tray bakes) which have been met with nothing but positive comments by not only our very regular and discerning customers, but new ones too. Our prices are extremely competitive and our food has never been called subservient (your comment) or substandard. Thirdly, I was indeed somewhat curt and offhand with you. However, your actions and comments whilst in the shop were noteworthy - let's just say as a rule we do not suffer snobbery, fools or rudeness and it obviously came across! For that I would normally apologise but, and I really would like you to take a moment over this, we all have off days and given we’re surviving in a post-pandemic business environment you might like to have looked beyond yourself and given a bit of kindness. Finally, perhaps you could think twice before posting factually incorrect comments as we always prefer to discuss customer issues face-to-face, which might have been a better option than hitting your keyboard so enthusiastically!

Big disappointment

I went yesterday and have to express my disappointment at the level of service i received. The young man who took my order for a filter coffee and a bacon sandwich did not look me in the eye and seemed distracted, just mumbled. He served me with a coffee which was warm and stewed. After 35 minutes i still had not recrived my sandwich and asked when it would arrive. It appears the docket was filed instead of being posted on the board. A different young man mumbled an apology, again with no eye contact and offered me another coffee whilst my meal arrived. It was more of the same stewed coffee but 35 minutes older. It was too strong to drink so i left it. The sandwich arrived quickly but the bacon was luke warm. I did not complain maybe i should have done, but the cafe appeared to be manned only by 3 young men, all with downcast eyes. After reading your lovely reviews it seems such a shame for standards to drop when there are no senior staff around

Hi maureensH5393NL, I'd like to address your "disappointment at the level of service", and your comment about standards and senior staff, which suggests you do not know our set up very well? Why did you think there were no senior staff around - do you perhaps equate seniority with age? Seniority does not come with age here, it comes with experience in hospitality and specifically in Speciality coffee and tea. Our baristas are some of the best in the business.....and I mean "in the business" i.e. nationally, not just in Harrogate, and their standards are second to none. You are of course entitled to your opinion of their demeanour, but we know our staff and they are some of the most professional people you could have beside you. At times, when we're busy, we all tend to be fully focussed on the tasks in hand and it is, literally, heads down for a while so perhaps that was what you picked up on. To address your other comments: Firstly, your ticket was taken at 13.23 and it was nearly 13.45 when you received your sandwich, as you say, after you had asked where it was. We were very busy at that time but even so, customers should not have to wait c25 mins mins for a sandwich. That said, you had seen other orders coming out so maybe a quick bob to the counter after 10mins might have alerted us sooner? Secondly, the bacon, is cooked in the oven each morning then heated to order, so if you felt it wasn't hot enough for you, again, a quick word would have let us rectify it immediately. Thirdly, the coffee....perhaps you do not understand the concept of the filter coffee we do here as it certainly is not stewed and I can assure you, the free cup you were given was the same quality, the same strength, the same temperature and the same flavour as the first, which you seemed to drink quite happily at the time.

Rude staff and expensive coffee

I nearly didn't review this place as supporting local independent businesses is the motto of our family. But I then had a change of heart. This needs saying. We have over a few months visited here for take out coffees and hot chocolates.. The first time my husband commented that the coffee was nice but it was expensive and the "man and woman behind the counter had an attitude" The second time I was alone and noticed the sniffy attitude to. It's as though they are doing you a favour serving you. I don't need over the top false niceties but slightly friendly and polite would be nice. Roll on a few weeks and the lovely smell of coffee wafted across the road and I popped in for a take away coffee and a hot chocolate. I am a diabetic so I asked for a hot chocolate made with 100% cocoa chocolate. I then asked if they had any sweeteners to which the woman making the drink said "really? Do you really think you need more sweetener? Don't you think it's sweet enough?" I replied that it was 100% cocoa chocolate and therefore has no sugar, which was the point of the order. In anyone's book this was extremely rude. Sorry Bean and Bud, you may have your niche customers who think you are wonderful but if you are consistently as rude to non regulars you don't deserve more custom.

Poor customer service

Extremely rude customer service as I paid with a £20 pound note and was given change for a £10.. I fully understand they can be genuine mistakes and they are people out there that lie but as a customer that uses the coffee shop around 5 days a week and have never had a problem or issue I was basically called a liar. They can keep the £10 that they stole and I will never return for what it would have cost them to refund for 2 coffees until the following day was pennys. I was even willing to leave it with them until the following day but as I was waiting I could see the girl who served me talking amounst them self's saying I didn't give them a 20 if that was the last of my money they would have had a total different response.

Really lovely local cafe

I was recently introduced to this cafe by my boyfriend (a fellow coffee snob) & it never disappoints! The best coffee around by far, and I don’t say that lightly! We are often served by Elliot who makes a fab coffee & is so lovely but whoever is in we are always greeted with a smile and excellent service. Also to add, I’m sad to see negative reviews on this lovely independent cafe. People are often too quick to not mention their disappointment at the time but jump on trip advisor as soon as they leave. I can’t recommend this cafe enough, fab coffee, lovely food & excellent service.

Absolutely just what we needed

My husband and I were desperate for a coffee, found this place and - Wow !!! We had two rounds of coffees and two rounds of toasted sandwiches - ( thought we were only having a coffee 😂😂). Beautiful coffees and simple but delicious toasted sandwich. Highly recommend- support the little individual because, as this place shows, they care !

Excellent speciality coffee with good service.

The baristas at Bean and Bud always serve excellent artisan coffee, you can tell it isnt your run of the mill coffee beans and they also give a choice of coffee beans for my flat white from different regions of the globe. The young lad on the counter is always really friendly, so big up to him as well. Would definitely recommend, far better than the chains.

Found by chance as visiting Harrogate. popped in for a coffee and a tea with a cake. Lovely service. Toasted tea cake was perfect and coffee was delicious. Sometimes coffee is bitter, here they have it just right. Thank you for our lovely stop!

The best thing is a constantly changing range of coffees, both washed and natural from the UK's best roasters. If you're really into your coffee, this is the place for you.
