We arrived at 7pm on Friday evening after travelling for 6 hours, we decided after reading good reviews to eat at the Exeter Arms. What a chaotic unpleasant experience we had , the bar staff told us to find a table then order food at...the bar so we got a table, I had to ask a waitress for a menu as she was passing she told me it was up to 1 hour wait for food so we made a choice and went to the bar to order. The bar man asked for my table number then said hang on and went to speak to another member of staff and came back to say they were not taking any food orders as it was busy. I said I understood it was 1 hour wait and that was OK as we had a drink and table already, he then said no as we hadn't booked he couldn't take my order at the moment, but I was welcome to check every half an our to see if the kitchen would take our order! We heard the same info being given to others. It is a very small tight space and to have to keep going to the bar every half an hour is the most bizarre thing I've ever heard. It is mismanagement st its best with an undercurrent of hostility between kitchen staff and bar staff.More

It's the first time that I've been disappointed by the Exeter after quite a few visits. Firstly let me say that the food offering was good but two things let the place down. One is the selection of craft beers; it has gone downhill recently....Previously there was a good range of cans from different breweries; now it's just Tiny Rebel and Beavertown. Secondly was the attitude when my wife found some foil in her lunch, the staff member wasn't apologetic in any way but simply said that she would 'tell her manager'. To compound this we were offered a paltry ten percent discount which I reluctantly accepted. It was only afterwards when I checked our bill that it was on the food item only not the whole bill - a measly 80p. I'll certainly be thinking twice before I go here again.More

Lovely evening at the Exeter - attentive service, great range of local ales & some quality wines. We were a party of 6 & had a variety of dishes from the menu - can honestly say - each meal was as good to taste as...it looked !!! You get what you pay for & we got everything we wanted & more !! We are infrequent regulars - but can honestly say - the food & service has been consistently top notch !!More

Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior, this was a really lovely find and a great recommendation by a friend. Plenty of real ales and very friendly bar staff who mixed me a whisky Mac on request. Good food, reasonably priced, nice ambience. We had...a quiet corner which was lovely but the pub was quite buzzy and had a nice vibe despite it being a Tuesday in the midst (still?!!) of a global pandemic. Did I mention the staff? They were lovely. So don't be put off by the fact it's not in the Cathedral Quarter, take a chance and head in!More

Ordered the oxtail lasagne from the Sunday menu. Couldn’t find any meat at all . Tasteless and greasy. Even the salad was awful. Won’t be visiting again

I visited The Exeter Arms on 14/8/21 for a couple of drinks with some friends, having reviewed this pub already I will make this short and sweet. The pub was as fantastic as ever with terrific helpful staff, finally the Exeter has flat ciders on...too in the form of Snailsbank, raspberry ripple. The cider was excellent and I will recommend another flavour for you which is Rhubarb. Keep up the great work.More

Nice…but We came especially from the lakes, we’re ex derby. This was a place held most dear and a regular place of enjoyment. What’s happened!?! The food was ok! Nice even, but seriously so many cut corners and less refinement. The allotment board piccalilli was...a thing of greatness, sadly now mush. No crackling, pork pie and the sausage rolls somewhat smaller. The steaks although tasty aren’t cooked to order, chips, beer and atmosphere still lovely and good enough to miss.More

Amazing food for an amazing price with friendly staff, great beer and a great atmosphere. Started with the soft shell crab, Viking burger for the main course and we finished off with the lemon tart.

An old haunt of mine for many years and there's been several changes but still a fine place. Excellent choice of well kept beers with a good reputation for food. Can get very busy but we hit the mid afternoon quieter time so really nice...and relaxed. Highly recommended.More

Hi Tracey The open at 1100 and start serving food at 1200. Just be aware that if Derby County are at home on a Saturday this pub gets very busy, you might want to contact them and reserve a table. regards, john
