Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We've just got here and I can only say 'at last! A proper English pub!' Just ordered some food which hasn't yet arrived but judging by the look of everyone else's it's going to be fab! And yes....it was as good as it looked. 👌...An all round brilliant place.More

People say hand cut chips, these are the best hand cut chips bar none!!! Scotch egg starter nailed it, runny yoke, crispy outer and taste spot on. Fish and chips. The freshest fish with a great touch of cockles on top. Chips already covered enough...said. My go to place. Fully recommendMore

We phoned the Exeter Arms on Friday night to see if they could squeeze us in on Saturday night and are we glad they did?! From the moment we walked in, the customer service was wonderful. Friendly, welcoming, happy staff and a lovely atmosphere. Not...once did the customer service waiver; we were treated like old friends and felt so incredibly comfortable in there. The food was amazing!! Oh my goodness, 6 meals, all cooked to perfection and beautifully tasty. The Viking Burgers were amazing, my daughter wanted another KFC for dessert :-) and the veggie burger "could easily fool a meat eater" according to one of our party. We cannot fault our experience. We had lovely food, great drinks and a warm welcome. Thank you all so muchMore

What a find! Excellent pub with great local beers and excellent food. Menu was varied and we enjoyed it so much we went back a second night. High quality food, well prepared and presented by friendly staff. Will definitely return when next in the area.

Sunday Lunch was utterly brilliant. I often feel a bit aggrieved when eating out as I can do better food myself, not a chance I can match the cooking here. They also have several decent beers and a couple of ciders which are well looked...after. The staff are great on the customer service front too. I thoroughly recommendMore

Booked a table here when Portsmouth were playing away at Derby as I love real ale and knew this was a great pub. We received a warm welcome despite being away fans (5 of us) and ordered food. The beer was perfect, service brilliant and...good perfect. I’d recommend the 20 mi Ute walk from the train station then 30 to the ground if visiting Derby as an away fan.More

As has been mentioned, this is a rare combination of a "proper" pub with a wide range of draught ales, combined with a high quality food offer. Actually, the "lager" selection is rather predictable. We shared a starter (not convinced by the pairing of delicate...crab with chilli but a personal view) and two mains, which were both excellent. Not cheap but prices in relation to quality. Orders at the bar, and credit card locked up for tab (I thought that had gone out a while ago). Attractive "old pub" decor, friendly service. We would definitely return. Large car park opposite, free from 2000.More

What a find! It's almost impossible in Britain to find a pub which does both a range of real ales and excellent food. Some pubs do one or the other. Excellent real ale pubs often don't do food at all and gastro pubs often have...no real ale, choosing to offer nasty gassy lager, or perhaps just one real ale, (almost always too cold and generic). However, the Exeter Arms has really superb homemade pub food and a wide selection of brilliant cask ales from local breweries. We had doorstep sandwiches with chips and gravy, a steal at £10 each - huge portions. The dripping gravy is the best I have ever had. Service is excellent too. Thanks!More

Visited with my partner to celebrate our anniversary, the second we were through the door we were made welcome by the staff who guided us to our table. We were informed that there was a 40 minute wait on food, but the welcoming atmosphere, brilliant...ales on offer and high reputation of the quality of the food easily made up for this. My partner had the Woodsman Chicken and was very impressed with the quality and size of the meal, I had the Pie3 and each pie was cooked to perfection - the chips, gravy and peas added in for an absolutely wonderful meal.More

We have given the Exeter arms multiple chances since reopening as it was one of my favourite places to visit before COVID. Unfortunately the numerous times I've visited have been really disappointing. The staff used to be excellent and the food was consistently good. However...since COVID you can be waiting for over an hour for food, despite the quietness of the restaurant, and tables who sat down after you will get their food first. The service has massively gone down hill and so has the quality of the food. The staff do not care about their customers and can be quite rude at times. It's a shame that a once great place is now mediocre at best.More

Hi Tracey The open at 1100 and start serving food at 1200. Just be aware that if Derby County are at home on a Saturday this pub gets very busy, you might want to contact them and reserve a table. regards, john
