Ye Olde Swan offers an inviting atmosphere that many guests find cozy and traditionally decorated. While the food quality and variety generally earn compliments, some diners have noted inconsistencies in flavor and portion sizes. The service at Ye Olde Swan is often lauded for its friendliness, although attentiveness can sometimes be hit or miss according to reviewers. Opinions on value are divided; some patrons appreciate the generous portions, while others find them lacking, with pricing also coming under scrutiny.

We were staying in the hotel just down the road and booked a table for dinner on a Friday night using Tesco Clubcard Vouchers. We were shown to our table and given the menu, our order was taken in a timely fashion. We both had a prawn cocktail, which was ok, I had a nice sirloin steak with jacket potato, it was cooked to perfection, hubby ordered the chicken and mushroom pie, and this is where we drop a star. It looked very impressive, but there could of been more chicken as there was a lot of sauce. He then had the special raspberry torte which for every portion sold a 20p donation goes to Macmillan which is a charity that is close to our hearts. Plenty of parking and friendly staff

After my last visit here on 2nd Feb, I vowed never to return. Food was cold and staff were clearly run off their feet. However, I decided to give it another shot... Why?, you might forgiven for asking, because a friend told me they had a new management team and things had drastically improved. Fast forward to Saturday 7th March 18:00, 5 of my friends and I had just been seated. Still worried from the previous experience, I looked around the restaurant and was greeted with smiles and people genuinely looking like they were enjoying their evenings. Gone were stressed look on the staffs faces, replaced instead with laughs and a spring in their steps. Our waitress came over to take our order and even had time to have a conversation about the pubs history with us, a stark contrast to the rushed vibe I had received last time. Now to the food, I ordered the cod and chips with garden peas....it was amazing! The fish was fresh, the batter was light and golden, the chips were perfect to my taste and most importantly it was hot! It could not have been better. My friends also really enjoyed their meals so all in all, the experience compared to last time was like chalk and cheese. I will 100% be going back and am definitely considering booking this place for Mothers day.

The first pub I visited for a meal after full lockdown was lifted and I keep going back. Staff are very friendly and efficient, while still being careful to obey Covid rules, and are equally careful to ensure customers do too, but without being bossy or officious. Reasonably priced well cooked pub grub, the fish and chips - 3 different size meals on the lunch menu - are first class as is the ‘leisurely lunch’ menu. Sam is a particular ray of sunshine on the staff. Happy, efficient and kind she can always find the time for a short chat and joke with her customers while never trying to make herself centre of attention. Just what a village pub restaurant needs.

Arrived an hour before we were supposed to have dinner to absolute chaos, 4 front of house staff members (2 of which were managers) to cope with a packed restaurant. People complaining everywhere, a 30 minute wait at the bar to get served. Two regulars having to go behind the bar and try and bail them out which were then left on their own on the bar so the staff members could go out to smoke?! Finally sat down an hour after we should have after asking numerous times, starters were out quickly and of good quality and not a long wait for the mains but they were all cold. Then over an hour for our mains to be cleared followed by dessert which was a bit of a mixed bag sorbets were lovely everything else was cold. No cheese received as by then we were being rushed out of the door with staff members bursting into tears and very angry looking partners waiting to collect them at the bar. I cannot fault the ladies serving the food as they were trying their best but had far too many tables to cope with. If you dont have staff members dont take so many bookings or get cover staff in it wasnt like they hadn't had a month of similar complaints about staffing levels and waits for food. This is such a shame as this pub has historically been great on other occasions such as the cider and gin festivals but it seems to have all fallen apart recently

We had a very disappointing experience. Our order was taken fairly quickly but we had a long wait for our starters. I ordered chicken goujons, covered in cajun spices but when they arrived they were appallingly bad. Long strips of overcooked dry chicken in a plain batter, there was nothing cajun about them. I ate a couple and then left the rest on my place. When the waitress returned, I queried the menu with her and she checked the wording noting that they were supposed to be cajun, and then promptly took my plate away. She did not ask if I would like anything else or apologise. Then my husbands main course arrived, which had a jug of gravy with it. He tried to pour the gravy over his meal but one small globule of jelly like substance dropped onto his place, with the rest staying stuck in the jug! It was the most disgusting gravy I have ever seen. The waitress did apologise for this and brought a slightly better jug out. To be fair, they did not charge us for my starter (I would not have paid for it anyway), but it was a very unsatisfactory meal. The food was mediocre at best and the service was slow. We will not be going back!

Went for dinner on Friday night , it was quite busy but we were welcomed quickly and sat at our table , after ordering starters and main courses , we had a drink whilst we waited . After about 20 minutes the waitress came over and brought out main corses . We let her know that we hadn’t had our starters yet, she apologised and said she would be back with our starter, after another 15 minute wait our starter arrived and it was amazing , whilst eating our starter our waitress came over and apologised for the mix up and assured us that our main courses will be cooked again fresh . Seeing as we ordered steak rare and a mixed grill , we knew that type of food won’t keep hot and would be over cooked if kept under the heat lamps . After finishing our starters , they did exactly what they said they wouldn’t do , they served us our original main course , the steak was now more medium rare, dry and cold , and the mixed grill was the same . Rightly we refused the meal , paid for the starters and left. This shows me that the staff and management have made the choice to put profit over customer service . We have given this restaurant the opportunity to respond to our complaint before posting a review , but as you may have guessed , they couldn’t be bothered to reply . If you go to this restaurant and it’s busy, take my advice , turn around and go somewhere else , they might value your custom more

Lovely venue & helpful friendly staff but food incredibly hit and miss... mainly miss on this particular visit. I ordered fish and chips and had to send the fish back as it was pretty much a lump of overdone batter and no fish in sight! The lovely waitress agreed and was very apologetic but surely the chef should have noticed at some point in the cooking process! My daughter’s pizza off the kids menu was a microwave number & pretty much hard/inedible bar a small section in the middle. Come on guys, nail the food and you’re on to a winner here!

We arrived at 7.30 but didn't receive any food until gone 9pm, what arrived was some dry bread a bit of salmon or tomato thrown on! NO PROSECCO. We pre-ordered so were very dissatisfied with the sorry starters that turned up, the goats cheese starter was missing the roasted fig and beetroot, the parfait was inedible. The Mains were ok but didn't arrive together. We complained to the assistant manager, it was quite clear that all of the management were off their heads and were leaving it to the poor waitresses and bar staff to deal with the flack! One of the desserts we pre ordered wasn't available at all. The management couldn't care less. We told them we wouldn't be paying the whole bill, but once home we added up what we'd had and realized that they had not taken off the deposit we had pre paid! The whole evening was an embarrassment, we won't be returning unless the current management are gone and the establishment has seriously upped their game. The Plough at Simpson will be our new local.

My family had the worse New Year’s Eve ever at this venue! We pre-booked for our family event as it looked like a good option with food and entertainment. We arrived in good time and was shown promptly to our table. There was no drink on arrival and we then waited over an hour for what can only be described as awful canopies. The prawns were not properly cooked, the bread soggy, minuscule pieces of salmon, and dreadful wet cheese. We then had to repeatedly ask for our starters and then they came in stages, leaving our youngest members to receive theirs after we had all finished. These weren’t too bad but included limp salads and burnt bread! The wait then continued for our main course and eventually we left without finishing the awful meal. Visitors around us were also complaining and leaving. How can a place like this get an important night like this so wrong!

Having turned up for our 8 o'clock sitting, we were seated at our less than festive table, with no offer of our free glass of prosecco. We waited for an hour and at least two prompts to various members of staff for our canapes, which can only be described as disgusting, the smoked salmon and prawn not only lacked both salmon and prawn but arrived with no dill sour cream on dry bits of toast and the mozzarella and tomato was even worse. A further wait for starters which again, were not as described, lacking half the ingredients and utterly tasteless. There was no allocated waitress and each course needed at least one prompt before anyone came to the table, finally the glass of free fizz (on arrival) arrived! Although the main course was reasonable, it was now nearly two hours after we arrived only to be told one of the pre-booked desserts was unavailable. During the evening there was no service at all and lots of excuses and apologies, this is not what you would expect on a New Year's Eve party. Would definitely not recommend this pub to anyone based on our experience last night. Very disappointed.

Visited the Swan this evening without reservation as tried to call today but no one answered the phone. Anyway arrived about 6:10pm and asked for table. The most rude uninterested guy I have ever seen acting as host showed us to a table. He handed us the menu and said you have no time for starters as we need the table in 40 min. The waitress who was the only high point offered us drinks and took our orders. We both had the roast which in our case was turkey. The food arrived in due course and the roast potatoes were ice cold and the rest of the food was cold. The plates were also cold. The stuffing was like cardboard both in consistency and taste. The waitress did offer to take both back but the presentation and temperature of the food were of such a low standard any Chef who would have allowed the meal to be presented to a customer was not worth giving a second chance. The Waitress did offer desert on the house which was ok but the evening was ruined by that point. We paid and left. Is there anyone with pride in there job left in England,,

Booked well in advance to visit on a Saturday evening, as staying in a nearby Airbnb for a few nights. Nice welcome and everything well explained (one way system etc), once I had stated that we had never been before. Staff very cheerful and helpful and service very good. The place was very poorly lit and quite a few people were using mobile phone torches to read the menu! This pub was let down by the food. Three choices of mains where not available - typically one of which I would have chosen. I went for the beef & red wine pie, which was just ok, however, the mash potato was a solid, reheated lump. The accompanying veg’ I’ve never seen the like of. One tiny broccoli floret, four 1p piece sized bits of carrot and a small spoonful of dry Savoy cabbage! Obviously had all been cooked earlier and stuck in the microwave. I would have been embarrassed to serve such an offering. My partner went for rump steak and chips, which he said was fine, but sauce charged as extra and not even a few peas or a grilled tomato came with it, just a few onion rings. Looking around we wished we’d opted for burger & chips, as these seemed to be better value. Lesson learned, stick to junk food at these chain establishments, or risk disappointment.

We had booked in for a team meal at Ye Olde Swan for a long overdue catch up, with most of us having not seen each other for more than a year due to Covid. Our table was booked outside as there were seven of us. Upon arrival I was informed that they weren’t serving outside as it had rained earlier in the day and that, if we wanted to eat outside, we would need to order via the app which might have proven to be a bit of a challenge in a large group. Alternatively we were offered two tables inside which weren’t next to each other, meaning our party would be split into a 2 and a 5. We asked for alternative tables and were told there weren’t any. Unfortunately this wasn’t true S there were tables in the dining area downstairs but they refused to seat us there as they didn’t have enough staff. The ‘mansplaining’ offered up by one of their staff members was the icing on the cake. Being called “my lovely” multiple times by someone who came across as quite condescending isn’t appreciated. We asked if we could move the table of two alongside (but not together) with the table of five while maintaining the appropriate space between the tables. The answer was no. It was all the government’s fault we were told. We entirely understand and respect the Covid rules, but the staff could have accommodated us in their lower seating area had they wanted to, or at least called us earlier today to explain they wouldn’t serve us outside and to talk through the options with us. I requested the risotto (advertised as a starter) as a main course and I was told that the waitress couldn’t ask for this (presumably the chef is terrifying!). I assumed I would just pay more and the portion would be a little bigger than the starter. That was not feasible apparently. We felt that they didn’t care, didn’t want our custom and couldn’t be bothered with us nor did they want us to have a good time. Had we not been limited for time we would have gone elsewhere. We were made to feel so unwelcome and our reunion was spoiled a little by the staff’s response and lack of understanding. The food was okay but I personally wouldn’t recommend spending money here unless you’re happy to be treated as a major inconvenience.

Went for lunch 24th July and ordered hand battered cod with triple cooked chips, I got pre battered frozen cod with frozen chips. How you can triple cook a bag of frozen chips I don’t know unless they mean they have been reheated twice😂. This meal I could have got from Tesco for a couple of quid. The service was poor, the waitress walked past dirty plates a number of times and did not clear table until we physically put out plates at the end of the table. She asked if everything was ok, I said I was disappointed and she just walked off🤣if I had not been using my tesco club card I don’t think I would have paid. The menu description is a complete lie and this should not be ok

Firstly I was very impressed with the way they have structured everything from entering and leaving the restaurant plus the one way system ensure your table isn't bypassed by other diners. Shout out to Anna the manager for her teams excellent working practices. We were served by Elenor who was really efficient and friendly. The food is as always really good and the service is great. It was one if our parties birthday and the staff even put a happy birthday candle in her dessert which was a lovely touch. Well worth a visit and hopefully it won't be long before we are back. Definitely book to not be disappointed.
