About
The Tickled Trout, West Farleigh is a modern and stylish pub with 6 boutique hotel rooms and a fabulous fish themed restaurant with an Italian twist. It also features an impressive fresh wine and beer bar where our guests can eat or drink in a relaxed yet sophisticated environment. We are open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Like all our other venues, we pride ourselves on serving delicious wines, ciders and craft ales including those produced by our own winery Hush Heath Estate in nearby Staplehurst. Our beautiful boutique hotel rooms, with their own private entrance, are designed with comfort and luxury in mind and in the summer we open our sun filled deck and terrace 'al fresco' dining area which overlooks the large, landscaped garden, complete with children's play area. An outside bar complements this area and is a fantastic 'go-to' destination and meeting place to gather friends and family together.

We are local to the Tickled Trout and wanted to try it for the first time having seen mixed reviews online. So, the food was very good as was the service. What this venue lacks is atmosphere. It has a bit of a 'canteen' feel to it in the main dining room. I firmly believe this is all down to the lighting. Lighting changes the whole ambiance to a venue. The spotlights are far too over the top making the room too bright. In fact, I was sitting facing one and was nearly blinded by it! We asked the waitress to dim the lights which she kindly did but they could have been turned down a lot more. More lamp, less light! The music is also lacking. Music and lighting are a winning combination. Not loud music, something suited to the environment and clientele (mainly couples on a Friday night). So nearly there! Just a few tweaks and it will be a great venue.

Average perfectly describes our lunch today. The service was very slow and the food was similar to that of a cheap carvery. Edible due to hunger but won’t be rushing back any time soon. The staff were friendly and apologetic but badly managed.

We had came on a Sunday, lovely weather and first tables to sit down great open space for kids to play whilst still being able to see them. Had some lovely local sparkling rose wine, great chablis & lovely single malt whiskey recommended by the waitress. The key elements which I would say are in need of attention, are the fatty beef cuts we got for our roast. I was still left hungry after my food but the potatoes were good, as ordered extra. The first time I came for roast years ago it was lovely. Probably wouldn’t order a roast again. The kids meals looked great and fresh. Altho the Eton mess for adults was the same size as the child’s, and not much of a Eton mess, More a sample size which I did question but thats how it was served for £6.50 wouldn’t say the desert was good value for money. Although the above food shortfalls, it didn’t ruin our experience because the service was attentive & the environment made up for it. Will definitely be returning very soon.

Good Evening, Thank you very much for your 4 star review. We have taken on board your comments regarding the beef, and have discussed this with our butchers. We will also review the portion size of the Eton Mess going forward. Despite the couple of negatives we are thrilled that you had an overall enjoyable experience, and that the service was great. Kind Regards, Aneurin

Being strangers to the area, we called in today at lunch time. Lots of cars on the car park so assumed it to be busy. Bar empty!, and no atmosphere. Asked if we were going to eat I made the rapid decision to look at the menu first. Given that it was lunchtime there were no bar snacks or light lunches, only full rather expensive mains or a choice of 3 sandwiches. My husband who is very keen on his real ale had the choice of one. He was given a taste and had to suggest that as it was warm maybe it was the first pint out. The bar man did offer to pull off a pint and after he had it was in fact very nice and not too expensive. My wine however was the cheapest on the limited list at £7 for a 175m and it was not good. So a pub with no atmosphere, no choice of real ale and no bar snacks cannot call itself a pub. Continuing on our way towards Tunbridge Wells we passed the pub which we probably should have used.

My husband and I went here for Sunday lunch, we were very disappointed with the food , we ordered the Lamb and Pork roasts which came within minutes of ordering them a sure sign that the potatoes would be like bullets which they were . The waiter after asking which meal belonged to whom then proceeded to give us the wrong meals, unfortunately the meat was so tasteless it took us a good few minutes to realise we were eating the wrong meals. We did complain and they were very apologetic and offered us free desserts , we ordered one dessert between us which was the Gypsy tart which was horrible under baked and grainy. They also have a distinct lack of good beers( I know its run by Hush Heath) but surely you should cater for all tastes. The food is not cheap and you could get a better meal for half the price elsewhere.

Do not book last booking time on Sundays 6pm as the roast dinners we were served in our opinion tasted as though they were from lunchtime service, the small roast potatoes looked dark cooked and tasted as they were earlier roasted potatoes then put in deep fryer, the half chicken had hardly any breast chicken and was mainly leg and wing and a lot of skin and bone not enjoyable. We also felt as though they wanted us served and out, when our 1st drinks were served they took our orders and starters were quickly served which was good but no sooner had these plates had taken away the main course arrived. These plates were then taken away, with a lot of food left on them, and immediately were asked if we would like desserts which we declined as we may have got them straight away which we did not wanted to feel rushed again The staff were very good

We went to the Tickled Trout for Sunday lunch and whilst it didn't disappoint, some easy areas to improve! We ordered the 'pistachio crusted' lamb rack sharer, which in reality had the smallest sprinkling of pistachio crumb, as per the photo. Also for £36, there was barely any veg, only one bit of carrot and parsnip each, maybe three roast potatoes each and one large tablespoon of cauliflower cheese. Think unfortunately in trying to cram the food onto one small chopping board for presentation purposes, meant being stingy with the trimmings. Would be better just to present the lamb, gravy and Yorkshire puddings on the board, but supply the veg in additional bowls/plates. We also had dessert (sticky toffee pudding and the panna cotta), which were perfect though. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Would recommend.

As one of a party of 12 guests staying at The Tickled Trout, we ate in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner. We were well looked after by all staff but particularly Oz who worked tirelessly all weekend. The food was superb and I would highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area.

Good Evening Amanda, We are very sorry to hear that on this occasion your experience did not meet your expectations. We unfortunately had an incredibly large amount of cancellations for our NYE 7 course tasting menu due to the impending COVID-19 lockdown, therefore we made the decision to serve a Festive Brunch Menu instead. If you'd like to discuss your review further please do not hesitate to contact me on 01622 814 717. Kind Regards, Jade.

Beautiful place but what a disappointment. We visited for a special occasion after hearing many good reviews. The food was awful tasteless cold prawns to start. Nothing like the photo advertised on the website. Couldn’t even taste the peaches due to such a thin slither. The steak for main was missing half the ingredients that should of accompanied and listed on the menu. For £28 for a sirloin is appalling. Thai mussels tasteless that much half the pot couldn’t be eaten. The waitress was lovely and agreed the meal was very much lacking. She advised the head chef was on holiday but for the price this isn’t acceptable! The room was nice and exceptionally clean. We were advised we could have a late check out at 12 yet the housekeeper let herself into the room at 11.30 😳. Upon paying the bill we were charged a 10% service charge. We even paid this on drinks that we had the bar which we got up and ordered at the bar. Very cheeky! Certainly won’t be recommending to any friends or family! Such a shame.

First of all the pluses. Nice attractive venue, large car park, wine from local vineyard great, staff pleasant & attentive. The food was uninspiring . My starter for £9 consisted of 3 tiger prawns , a scattering of dried toast the figs that were supposed to be in it were nonexistent. Main course was bream £22. Fish a bit bland in a dish with 3 heads of brocolli spears &no more than 3 small new potatoes. My husbands fish burger was dry, served with chips that tasted of cooking oil & were under cooked no garnish at all. My flat white coffee which is supposed to be made with milk but a fairly strong coffee was too large ‘ more like a latte. Bill came to nearly £100 vastly over priced for what it was. Disappointing.

What an amazing team of staff at The Tickled Trout . From the moment we were warmly welcomed felt totally relaxed . All covid procedures well organised and in operation without any fault and felt safe in this spotless clean pub and hotel. The rooms are a delight ,super comfy beds and enchanting decor. Our food was piping hot and the Fish so fresh thought they had just caught it. A nite away as we should have been abroad but will now add this lovely gem of a place to our getaway list. We will return, thank you we were tickled pink at The Trout.

As a regular visitor to family in Maidstone I usually book the premier inn in the town center. I booked this place for a change and also as I preferred a smaller venue given the COVID situation. From the moment of booking to the moment of check out I had a 5* experience. The manager (Oz) takes a personal interest in every aspect of the place and it shows. The pub is well run (even with the restrictions), the location is beautiful, the food is great and the rooms are way nicer than the generic room of the larger brands. I highly recommend the Tickled trout for food, drink, lodgings and an overall relaxing experience.

I visited the Tickled Trout on Saturday with my husband after a little walk down at Teston Country Park. From the minute we entered the pub to the minute we left we couldn't have felt more welcomed. Due to the Covid-19 situation we have been very unsure on whether to visit any pubs or restaurants, but we are extremely happy to have visited the Tickled Trout for our first meal out since before lockdown, and definitely will not be our last visit. The extra precautions which are taken make us feel very comfortable, with hand sanitising and track and trace sign in. We sat outside due to the lovely whether, the garden is very well presented with social distancing mesaures taken seriously. We ordered our food which came out quickly, with amazing presentation. Myself, I had the fish and chips which was full of flavour and lovely crispy chips, and my husband went for something a bit different to usual and had the curry which he said was the best curry he had eaten in a very long time, overall the food was delicious and regret deciding to not have a dessert!! The tickled trout also have rooms which you can stay in, this will be something we are going to look into on our next visit, which will be very soon. Thank you again, we look forward to next time.

Gastro-pub in a beautiful part of the Kent countryside. The food was absolutely delicious, we stayed in the pubs boutique style bedrooms, had dinner and breakfast twice across a lovely weekend. Oz was an absolute superstar making us feel welcome, helping us out whenever we needed and it was a pleasure to eat and stay here
