We are the proud owners of this Freehouse, which we purchased in February 2016 after the pub had stood shut for almost 2 years. On our own, we have completely gutted and refurbished the pub over just a few months. Using our skills obtained by running our family business, which specialises in refurbishing pubs and hotels and our knowledge of running a small local pub in sleepy old Norfolk many years ago. Entertaining and socialising is something that comes naturally to us and nothing makes us happier than people feeling looked after, welcomed and entertained. We are told that we make great hosts and hope you will be of the same opinion when you pay us a visit. We try our utmost to accommodate

Such a shame - the pub is so beautiful in a gorgeous location, but it was totally let down by the very lazy menu / cooking on the occasion we visited. We went on a Sunday and it wasn't that busy when we arrived. There...were a few tapas style nibbles (olives, bread), but only 2 starters (prawn cocktail and soup). I opted for the prawns, which were watery, pre-frozen bullets in a very lack-lustre Marie Rose sauce...with lots of water at the bottom of the cup. My husband ordered the Sunday roast - chicken. It was abysmal. A very dry chicken breast, with over cooked veg (all sitting in water which did nothing for the cauli cheese), and a flat, crispy Yorkshire pud that should never have made it onto the plate. My father in law had the burger, which he enjoyed, but i had the pie...steak & ale - sadly the pie was stone cold in the middle and the hard pastry crust far outweighed the filling. the crust was thick and rock solid. Such a shame as the filling was quite tasty. No apology for the pie being cold either. The menu is limited, so if you're going to have a small menu, at least make sure what you are putting on the tables is exceptional or at least hot - there really are no excuses for such lazy cooking.More

On our first visit to the Hucking Estate we came across by chance this “oasis in the dessert “ after an hours dog walking in the rain. On arrival all of the staff were so friendly and hospitable. The first member of staff told not...to worry about our rather damp appearance with two bedraggled pooches in tow. We were ushered in to what felt like a really warm and well presented pub/restaurant. It felt clean and fresh with some lovely pictures and knick knacks dotted around. We’d planned to have just a quick drink and a bag of crisps but because of the welcome and feel of the place we stayed for 3x Sunday roasts. These arrived really quickly and were hot tasty and perfectly sized. We were asked a couple of times if we were ok and the mutts were given a treat each too. Can’t fault the service, atmosphere or the surroundings. I’m really looking forward to doing this walk again! Thanks team 👍More

The location of the pub is incredible, but the Sunday lunch today was poor. The nut roast lacked seasoning, flavour and - crucially - any discernible nuts! It was a very strange lump of rice and mashed up kidney beans, which appeared to have been...baked and then covered in gravy. Vegetables were very over cooked and mushy, and my partner’s burger was black on the outside and undercooked in the middle. The side dish that we ordered didn’t turn up, despite us asking the waitress and being told ‘she’d go and see’. When I went inside to ask for a refund of the misting side dish and give a waitress feedback, she was apologetic (it wasn’t her fault, of course), but we won’t be coming back anytime soon if this is the standard of food now. It’s a shame, because we’ve visited on quieter midweek days and had quite nice sandwiches/baguettes for lunch. I suspect that the kitchen simply doesn’t have the capacity for the number of covers they want to get through.More

I enjoyed the best Sunday roast ever (sorry mum) at this archetypal English country pub. As well as great food (everyone in our group agreed), the staff were friendly and helpful - when my daughter couldn't finish her chips, the staff member packed them up...for us to take home with a tip on how best to heat them up again. We also enjoyed the live music, which we sat and listened to in the sunshine... I'd like to thank the father and daughter who helped us in a sticky spot - we'd lost the key to our caravan's security lock! He (owner of the pub, I think?) fetched the suitable equipment to cut through the chain for us. We really appreciated his help. And on the subject of the affiliated campsite - impeccable showerrooms/toilets (recently refurbed, I'm guessing) and very peaceful. The icing on the cake was the stunning countryside around!More

Visited on the spur of the moment after a long dog walk around the Hucking Estate. Had sandwiches and a drink on a busy Sunday lunchtime session. Food & drink was great, really responsibly priced. We had been worried it would be expensive but it...wasn’t. Staff were friendly and chatty. We sat in the outside area initially and it was lovely to see horses tied up and riders enjoying a meal. Unfortunately the weather took a turn so we moved to the bar area. Was able to take dog in to pub with us, was made to feel welcome with the dog which isn’t always the case in ‘dog friendly ‘ establishments. Will definitely look at returning again soon.More

The owners have done a superb job restoring this wonderful old pub set in the glorious Kent countryside. The food and 'London Pride" were...excellent along with the very friendly staff and locals. The owner was also very friendly and took time to explain interesting aspects of the refurbishment. If you haven't been before it is definitely worth a visit and you will not be disappointed.More

Never had to moan before always had a lovely meal here. Today unfortunately didn’t go to well. Ordered our meal’s, two burgers and a chicken roast for myself. Requested cheese on both burgers, didn’t happen, a sad piece of lettuce and a very hard burger...arrived with chips and the burger bun not even toasted just a dry bun. Very unusual, both not eaten. My chicken roast arrived looking ok. Unfortunately by time I ran around the garden area trying to find knife and forks as none in the cutlery area or salt, no napkins mine was cold, not happy.More

First, let me state that in my opinion, I'm not one to make a fuss about a place to get a free meal and pointless stuff like that. I refer you to previous reviews of mine if that's what you suspect. I hate that. I...do however, feel that sloppy service should be commented on. As should passive aggressive non-pleasant pleasantness that offers completely meaningless platitudes uttered by someone who wouldn't apparently know good service if it slapped them round the face. We were in the area for a flower event and this was the nearest pub, and it looked busy on a Saturday lunchtime, with loads of seating outside. No warning signs were set off with us, so we ventured in. I am always wary when bar staff are young teenagers, so that was possibly the first sign of impending trouble. Especially when there is a slow-moving slightly disgruntled queue and two more teenagers doing nothing but hovering around the bar anyway. However, we were there now. I gritted my teeth, and as the girl I actually spoke to seemed the most reliable of the three, I gave my order slowly and clearly, knowing that ordering a starter for my son and two mains for my wife and I can throw kitchens into confusion. She seemed clear. We ordered drinks, my pint was a bit short-poured but nothing worth moaning about, the wife's gin & tonic was serviceable but nothing to knock your socks off about, and a nice apple juice for the toddler. We sat outside in the garden, and that was very pleasant. Good tables, plenty of space, quite tidy. A slightly sullen girl served up my son's meal and airily informed us that the cutlery and sauces were "over there!" OK, I thought, not sure I'm going to be mad keen about paying a service charge if I've got to do half of it myself, but whatever. 15 to 20 minutes went by. No sign of our dinner. My son was eating his dinner which was not the worst kids meal I've ever seen but by no means the best either. Still trying to stave off the air of impending doom about our dinners I went into the bar to see where they were. The same girl who took the order originally went into the kitchen and returned saying it was on the way. No apology, no urgency, and it appears, no truthfulness either. Ten minutes later, a girl turns up, dis-interestedly takes an empty glass, so I enquired what might have become of our dinners. Another 10 minutes goes by, whereupon my wife goes in. Returns a few minutes later and says we're going. I go in to pick up my card, tell someone what's happened and pay for what we've had. I really wouldn't care to meet that person again. To infer she's somehow doing me a favour by refunding the meals that have never arrived is really annoying. Then she tells me how the meals are *now* ready and would be going in the bin as if that's somehow my fault. Incredible "service"! All in all, the lesson here is: If you're lucky enough that your dinner doesn't get forgotten, you will probably have an OK meal here, but we'll never know. But, if it doesn't turn up, do not expect any customer service attempt to put the situation right. I appreciate, things happen, but decent people apologize. If you can't do that, don't run a pub.More

Incredibly poor service. Waited over an hour with children for some sandwiches (not exactly a lavish or complicated 3 course meal). Asked 4 times for update on the food and was told they would be back with an update on the 4th ask. No update!...Asked again and then they ran out of the ingredients when we hit the 1 hour mark. We asked for money back if the food wasn’t going to come soon. This was ignored. Staff were not helpful and just kept saying it is busy. We understood at first and were told it would be a half an hour wait but when it got to 70 minutes before food can (and having to chase several times) it wasn’t really acceptable. Other tables served before us despite ordering well after. A table nearby had to complain about a fatty, overcooked steak. When we received the food, 2 were wrong but at this stage we couldn’t be bothered to send back. Not bad quality of food but overall a really disappointing service from what is a lovely-looking, well-situated pub. Won’t be returning and certainly not recommending to anyone.More
