We visited Eight Bells for my birthday. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door with a very warm welcome by Marie. We were shown to our room which was very clean and well presented. We had a dinner reservation at the restaurant where the service and food were both a very high standard and all the staff were lovely. We really enjoyed our meal and didn’t feel interrupted yet the staff were very attentive. I asked for the vegetarian meal to be adapted due to my allergies and this was no trouble and what came out was above expectation. I would fully recommend both the accommodation and restaurant. We will be returning very soon.

We were staying in a cottage around the corner from the Eight Bells so we thought it would be perfect to pop in for a Friday night pub feed in the village. And we were not disappointed!
The pub itself is a real gem of a building and setting. Everything we expected a great Cotswold pub to be. Fantastic garden and terrace on offer and the inside was a delight too.
The staff were fantastic. Especially with everything they have to contend with currently. They were all so attentive, friendly, smiley and could not do enough for you. Diligently keeping everything clean and tidy as well to cope with the COVID regulations.
And the all important food and beer....both were fantastic. The sirloin steak special was very tasty and well cooked and the chicken pie was a treat! Great puddings as well. The only minor minor criticism was that the salt and pepper squid, albeit delicious, was slightly on the small portion side given the price of a starter. But that wasn’t enough to warrant not giving a 5* review.
We’ll be coming back to Chipping Campden again for sure and we won’t hesitate to come back to this delightful pub for another fantastic feed.
Thank you to all of the staff for a Friday night that we really wanted!

We visited the Eight Bells for lunch and we were so pleased we did.
We received a warm and friendly welcome from the staff who looked after us from the outset.
The menu was Christmas themed but had a lot of choice that catered for all.
Mains were all in the region of approx £15 with all desserts at £7.45.
The food was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully.
We all opted for Sticky Toffee Pudding as dessert and how glad were we. It just melted in your mouth !!
We visited on a Thurs lunchtime and the place was quite full.
I would imagine that in a normal climate (no covid) you would have to book??.
Never walk by this gorgeous pub without going in, you'll be missing a real gem !!

Just had a meal at the Eight Bells and I can’t say how disappointed we have been. The spaghetti that the meatballs came with tasted like it had came out of a tin. I had the triple cooked chips with my pie as I asked to change from mash, I questioned the chips as they were the size of French fries, can anyone tell me how French fries can be triple fried?!! Personally they are doing 20% off Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and believe they are cutting quality to save on these days. Not sure I’m right as it’s the first and last time I’ll eat there. All said can’t fault is the service though.

Whilst I appreciate the pub has only just re-opened and has to operate within the Covid guidelines set by the Government but what has happened to the traditional fish and chips which used to be served. My fish portion was tasty but did not resemble a fish, the chips were disappointing, the portion size was small and the price point was too high. I want to support all my local businesses to ensure they survive this crisis so please bring back the traditional fish and chips!

so sorry you were disappointed with the fish and chips - the fish we serve is a 'fillet' - not a whole fish - which is why it did not resemble 'a fish' ; that said, we would have been happy to provide more chips if they were required.

We had reserved a table for an evening meal in advance of our stay in Chipping Campden. We arrived on time ordered a main meal and wine. However, after one hour we were presented with the bill (without asking for it and we were just about to order a desert) and told that they required the table back. When we explained that we had only had the table for an hour and wished to order a desert, the desert menu was thrust down onto the table. This was totally unnecessary and highly unprofessional. When we booked the table in advance and again when we arrived on the day we were not informed that we could only have the table for an hour. We had'nt even finished our drinks and were 'invited' to finish them at the bar. We complained 'nicely' to a member of staff behind the bar about our experience but there was no real apology so we just paid the bill and left. We understand that there was a re-arranged music festival taking place in Chipping Campden at that time which meant that restaurants could be busy, but at no stage were we made aware of this when we booked the table a week in advance and that table times could be or would be compromised and again we were not made aware of any issues when we arrived at the appointed time on the day. Very disappointing and would never use this establishment again. This is the first time we have ever had to post a negative review.

We stopped by on Wednesday 14th April in search for a nice place to have lunch encouraged by the reviews, but were very disappointed they served only sandwiches in takeaway boxes at the table. The fries had a taste of bad oil.
Really no effort at all , we understand it’s just after reopening, but have been to so many other places in the area that have really made a big effort despite the difficulties. This is to encourage to step it back up!

i am sorry you were disappointed with our 'offer' on our first week open after 16 weeks of closure.
unfortunately our head chef's wife died the month prior, so we are severely understaffed in our kitchen dept but rather than offer 'nothing' we decided on a 'basic' offer at the start of the week in order to offer a full menu towards the weekend. To that end, our staff explained this to ANYONE who wanted to eat at lunchtime, and they could either accept it was 'sandwiches in take-away cartons' - or go somewhere that suited them better.
therefore i do not 'apologise' that we could not mare 'a big effort' as others you suggest have, but would point out that with hospitality being the hardest hit industry during all of the lockdowns, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything!

Lovely venue, perfect setting with good social distancing measures. However disappointing food, we called in today for lunch. The chips were sold as triple cooked, however they were frozen fried chips, which were soaked in oil and very soggy, while the salmon and prawn platter starter was over priced for a few cold water prawns with a cheap slice of smoked salmon which still had the brown/grey meat on.

so sorry you were disappointed with the food served during your visit.
I must say though that we do not have 'frozen fried chips' but do cut potatoes ourselves and triple-fry them; sometimes the potatoes have a higher sugar/moisture content, which is why they may not have been as crisp as you would have liked.
all our food is freshly prepared to order, so we take pride in it's freshness and the fact there was a little 'brown' on the salmon would not have reflected on the freshness of the product.
hopefully your next visit will be more in keeping with our usual high standards.

A classic pub with nooks, a courtyard and pleasant beer garden. However, the covid requirements have been excessively applied with an unwelcoming chain at the entrance, forced use of hand sanitiser and multiple officious staff revelling in barking instructions.
As for the food, my partner enjoyed her fish & chips but my lamb shank was rather tough and at £42 for this and two glasses of wine even with the pubs 'Eat Out to Help Out' discount felt overpriced.

After reading all the reviews decided to book a table and eat here. Most disappointed. I had the Caesar salad, which quite honestly was not worth the money. My husband’s meal was at best warm and if it had been me eating it I would have sent it back. Maybe we visited on an off night for the pub, but if they want to have customers, they need to be on their game every night.

Booked dinner at the Eight Bells based on reviews I read. Our Sunday dinner was disappointing. My boyfriend ordered roast beef which was tough and barely hot and I had the lamb tagine with cous cous. The tagine had a nice flavour overall but the cous cous was clumpy. Our meals came out suspiciously fast after we ordered and we suspected they were heated up in a microwave. We didn’t bother to stay for dessert. Plenty of other, more decent pubs to eat at, we won’t be back!

Nice pub, well laid out for Covid and friendly service.
However, food was very disappointing and overpriced. £19 for a lamb shank that could have been better and the Special curry (also £19) was pretty bland

We enjoyed a very pleasant midwinter lunch. The game pie was exceptionally good. My one comment would be that the quantities of vegetables, one carrot and a spoonful of greens was a little on the light side, hence the average rather than good to excellent rating. The staff were very friendly and attentive and overall value for money I guess £20 per person for one course, and a drink is about par for the course in these inflated times More likely to use one of the other restaurants in Chipping Campden, rather than return here

We ate at Eight Bells twice during our three night stay in Chipping Campden.. The food was excellent. We had spicy carrot and coconut soup and the waitress asked the chef for the recipe so I can make it at home. Everyone was very friendly and very good service.

Lovely staff who were very friendly and managed to find us a seat in the courtyard as they said the tables were fully booked inside. They did not appear to be but maybe they were expecting to be busy later.
Food overpriced and very mediocre would definitely not return to eat. Tables were not the cleanest. I had fish and chips for 16 pound I would have expected for this price a large fish not the small mainly batter fish I received. Husband had the sausage similar price the portion very small would have fed a child not what you would expect for that price. Very disappointing and would not recommend.
